PiMAX 8K VR

https://www.roadtovr.com/pimax-launches-pre-orders-today-8k-5k-vr-headsets-pricing-specs/amp/

Pimax “8K” – $900
Pimax “5K” Plus – $700
Pimax “5K” BE – $1,000 (?!)

A bit stiff.
To get this much for them they will have to eventually knock the software out of the park.

Unless they change panels and sort out the 8k I'm honestly cannot see why anyone would choose that option.

I'm still.considering sticking with the 8k as it has better blacks and colours. Yes, it isn't as sharp as the 5k, I'm.sure it will be a massive step up from the rift.

Business Edition has OLEDs, which will give you better blacks, but larger SDE due to pentile design of the OLED panels. Judging from the reviews 5k+ is the best value proposition, though at this price is hard to justify given that even the strongest GPUs struggle with it :( It will get better over time of course (also with more optimized software) but I am unsure whether I want to bleed on the bleeding edge again. On the other hand, larger sweetspot is my selling point and it is entirely possible that when I actually try the 5k+, I will cough up the amount they demand, but now it rides on many more variables than before ;-)

ATM, all the Pimax web pages are down, so can anybody help in saying when expected pre-order shipping is likely to be 2018 or are we well into 2019. I expect it will be 2019 as the backers don't even have theirs yet and understandably they must come first.

And another question if i may please?

As a Rift only user, what 'Other' things will i need to play ED via the Pimax 5k+?

I thank you knowledgeable people as always.

My understanding is that the pre-order prices are for the headset only (no tracking, no controllers). As an Oculus user you would be in the position of having to source a full tracking solution (and controllers for games outside of Elite) from a HTC reseller or via the secondhand market. That is until Pimax offer full kits which include the tracking basestations and their controllers.

A tracking basestation currently retails at £134, you would need 2. A Vive controller is £129 per unit. No idea if you would need a link control box or if Pimax's own kit takes care of that aspect. So you could be adding an additional £500+ to the cost of the HMD unless you are happy to go 3DoF with no motion controller support. For the most part, people would be better off buying a second hand Vive setup and binning (or reselling) the HMD as it would work out cheaper. All of the above are for the 1.0 versions of the basestations, Chances are when the Knuckles controllers release many folks will want to upgrade to 2.0 basestations.

If you are not running a GTX1080Ti or RTX2080 and above you may also be looking at a purchasing a new GPU as well if you want something close to acceptable frame rates (I'm still yet to see an indepth review of frame rates in Elite but the snippets I've seen didn't look to good).

So yeah, if you are coming from Oculus kit and don't own a top teir GPU you could be looking at an additional £1000 or more on top of the HMD price (plus shipping costs). Oouuch. Got an old CPU? Add another on another £500 or so. Double ooouuch!

As I am a kickstarter backer (and very pleased I did now) I don't need to worry about the price. Just which unit to choose. Either the 5k+ or the 8K.

The Headset will work for ED without any extras. You will want to add a single base station to get 6DoF, but the leaning back and forth in ED shouldn't be necessary at all for reading some text as with current gen. So I would simply get that later when the 2nd version ones become available.

Steamvr has since updated to allow setting up with only one base.
There is also no 'control box' for the vive, everything goes via the hmd over bluetooth.
The little box is merely a place to consolidate wires.

The lighthouse emitters actually do so little communication with the HMD that you can use multiple vives in that same area.
They just sweep over the area with its IR laser and the sensors in hmd is what decides where itself is.

For Elite, maybe 1 basestation would work fine. For anything outside of cockpit based games or seated game pad experiences 1 basestation would not do the trick or not very well.

Yeah I wasn't sure about the control box.

@ mazi
Why would anyone in their right mind spend that much money on a VR HMD to only use 3DoF?? 6DoF isn't about reading text, it's for comfort and a more natural experience. 3DoF can make people sick, unless they are able to sit perfectly still other than rotating their heads side to side and up and down, even then neck bone modelling techniques were used to help with sickness, techniques which are not in Elite. Yuk.

While I was researching my Wireless adapter I came across a post saying that the box also controls the lighthouse and controller shutdown, and lighthouse start. He noticed that as he had disconnected the box. HTC makes no mention of this in the wireless 'instructions' provided though.

in my experience that and all other Bluetooth related tasks where so unreliable it was imperative for a decent vive experience to disable as many of them as possible.

instead I simply put the bases on RF controlled power plugs ;)

The pimax is also considerably wider than a vive.
Wider than most heads even my own blockhead.
And therefore suffer much less occlusion to the point where it may very well work fine with just one emitter.

Anyhoo. better to have one than none imo.

Crisp and clear text on the 5K+ sounds wonderful, but don't we risk a lot of shimmering on vertical and horizontal lines and a risk of blocky diagonal lines? The reason the old video games with 320x200 pixel resolution didn't look like grandmas cross stitch embroidery was because of CRT TVs smoothing them over with their unexact nature. Like the lines in this knights armour?

Picture stolen from some forum on the internet, just to make a point. :)

Looks like the space between the pixels is larger with the 8k. No matter what the cause, it seems an odd choice to make.

Looks like they are laid out in a different pattern. It would have been nice if those screenshots had been taken at the same angle, to make the comparison fairer.
