PirateCon USS?

Ferrying my Corvette around, getting all the bits & bobs G5'd prior to 3.0, and a weird thing happened.

For a bit of fun, I'd bought half a dozen tonnes of gold before setting off, which attracted the odd pirate every so often to provide a bit of entertainment.

Arrived in Shinrarta to get my SCBs modded and got a "That's the ship with the big haul" message but no ship on my scanner.
A few seconds later I get another "Tasty Cargo" message but, again, there's no ship on my scanner.
Flying toward Jameson Base and I'd pretty-much given up hope of a pirate attack when I noticed a "Distress Call" USS.
I figured that if the other pirates weren't going to show up, this might be an ambush so I dropped into it so see if I could find something to shoot at.

Dropped out of SC and there was nothing around but debris.
A few seconds later 5 or 6 pokey ships (Sideys, Eagles, DBSs etc) jump in and just sit there.
I scan a couple of them and they're all showing as Clean.
I figure it was probably going to go bad so I deployed my SLF.

Next thing I know, the shooting starts so I start picking them off.
Then I hear another "jump-in" noise and there's another 5 or 6 red blobs on my scanner.
Okay, probably better start taking this seriously.
Then I hear another "jump-in" noise and now there's easily more than a dozen red blobs on my scanner, even after I'd destroyed 3 or 4.
They're mostly Sideys, Eagles and DBSs, with the odd Cobra and AspS.

The cumulative firepower was pretty spectacular.
I could barely see anything for laser beams and missile explosions.
I was pretty-much relying on my scanner to line up targets and shoot at them 'cos I couldn't see anything through the cockpit canopy.

Started to thin them out, lost almost all my shields, and then the cops showed up.
And then more cops showed up, and more cops showed up.
By the time the pirates were gone there were fifteen cop-ships hanging around.

So, what I was wondering was; is this a normal thing?

Is it normal to find yourself up against so many pirate ships all at the same time?
Most of the time I only ever find 2 or 3 pirates waiting in a "Distress Call" USS.

I have a feeling that what happened was that the game spawned those other pirates who'd messaged me when I first arrived in SD but spawned them as duplicates of the wing of pirates that was supposed to be waiting in the USS rather than as the (presumably) single ships they might normally have been.
Either that or, I suppose, both the previous messages I got were from wings of 5 or 6 pirate ships.

In any case, it was kind of fun. :D

Now that sounds like fun.

Whaddaya know?
Just happened to me 10 minutes ago.
Distress USS. Better check it. A Python. Clean.
In jump 4 ships. "Gimmee" 4 dead pirates.
Ditto "Gimmee" 8 dead pirates.
Ditto "Gimmee" only killed one more and the boosted. Damn that was monotonous.

And so many dopes say nothing happens in solo. I beg to differ.

I thought this was standard at distress calls? When the Cutter was first in beta, a few ppl complained that it couldn't handle itself against multiple small ships (buff the turn rate) I uploaded a video, murdering waves of pirate NPC's.

Good fun, although I think it was designed for wing combat.

The only distress calls I’ve been to were only ever filled with a single cargo ship asking for fuel, so I stopped visiting them.

I think what happened on top of the 'standard' USS spawns was the other two pursuers dropped into the USS, too, as they often do.

Funny thing happened when I got a cargo pirate spawn hailing me in supercruise, disappearing from scanner and then, when a mission pirate spawn interdicted me, it appeared again during the fight with the mission pirate. But instead of scanning and shooting me, it was helping me out against the other pirate only to then turn against me after that one blew up. Guess pirates don't like to share.

I have dropped into quite a few empty USS's just lately. Most of the time they are Weapon fire Detected (various level treats). Also dropped into Weapon Fire Detected USS's and all ships are clean. The rozzers are there as well but all ships just mill around minding their own business.

Anyone else remember when these also had cap ships? /sigh...Literally, as described by the OP, but with a pirate farragut duking it out with a Fed farragut. Then they got bugged, then they got removed from the game. :(

Distress calls have always been the best USS.
