Pirating materials

Realising i wont be able to compete in pvp due to the time sink for the materies, i turned to piracy. Proper piracy. Outfitted my clipper with limpets, wake scanner, tourretes. 570 speed and reinforced shields. Piracy is so fun but it is pointless when it comes to actual earnings. How about being able to pirate materials. Could bring back piracy and make it worth while. Have a specialised limpet control. What do you guys think?

A limpet that Comes pick up the materials right out of my pocket? Yes because may I remind you that mats are gathered in a pillbox inside our space suits :p

Like credits, materials cannot be transferred directly to another player. Sandro was asked whether players would drop materials on destruction in an Engineers Beta stream - he said that we wouldn't.

Time is the currency of engineers - being able to transfer materials would circumvent the requirement for each player to gather their own....

Seems odd in a way, though. After all, NPCs drop mats all the time.

Yes, whenever I get involved in 'Engineering' I also am fully equipped with 'Tourettes'!

NB - I would provide a vid but I fear it might fall foul of the forum rules regarding acceptable language.

I like this proposal very much, I don't see it happening sadly though, too much opposition to piracy unfortunately.

But hey at least we can still bypass the CG legwork via local acquisitions!

Yeah i belive it would make piracy viable. As it stands piracy its just fun with no money value. Blowing up your target should not yeld any mats in order to stop player killing. Could have some nice interections if mats are scannable and can be pirated. To the guy that said i just want to steal mats because i am lazy...duh i am a pirate and that is what we do...we steal stuff

NPCs are there for our entertainment....

.... players might not find having their material store raided by another player particularly entertaining.

Reread. It's not material out of their store, but material that was used in the production of their vessel and that remained intact after ship destruction.

Very much this. I can think of several reasons why it would be helpful to be able to transfer credits & materials/data scans to another player, but it would usurp the need to gather them yourself, which I think is a fundamental part of the Engineers - it takes you out of your comfort zone & gives you a reason to learn how to do activities that you might not otherwise try.

You are not a pirate. You are a player playing a pirate.
You want to take away something that acquiring for the other player took some considerable time and effort and is the result of an activity that that player might not find very enjoyable ("grind").

That's simply not something that would make the game better or more interesting for all players. It wouldn't bring back piracy, it would result in even less players accepting piracy.

You don't want to collect materials for engineers, because it's to time consuming.
You want to take away the materials from other players who spend a lot of time to get those sometimes really hard to get materials.

I'm sure you will understand why this is a terrible idea if you think about it a bit.

It's actually a fantastic idea. Stealing material that others have worked hard for is the essence of Piracy. If a PvP pirate had a way to steal someone's Pharceutical Isolators, or all their Datamined Wake Exceptions, man, I'd be there like stink on a monkey!

Indeed - and player ships don't drop materials (as that would be a loot-drop for going straight to "destroy" in an encounter), just as they don't drop cargo....

LOL

That is totally what piracy is: robbing others of their hard earned.
Actually there was a CMDR hanging out on the approach to Qwent and pirating Modular Terminals.

I got mine through a different sort of player interaction, but full respek for the Pie Rats.

That's how it works in reality. Where the victim has no choice.

I'm talking about Elite Dangerous.
It's a game.
Players have a choice.

If the game is designed in a way that is not enjoyable for the majority of it's players the game simply will fail.
It doesn't matter how enjoyable or cool or interesting a gameplay mechanic is for the player doing it if that gameplay mechanic requires an other player. If the gameplay mechanic is not interesting or enjoyable for the other player the gameplay mechanic is a failure.

Players have a choice and they use the options they have to play the game in a way they enjoy. Remove the options and they stop playing.
