Planet ground textures look like asp

Why isn't ED using tesselation? Using the srv using and looking at the ground feels like driving on a sheet of paper with a few rocks here and there. And it looks even worse in vr. Tesselation would give these 2d textures depth, and add to what the ground should actually look like.

This also affects planets. Approaching planets you don't get a sense that it has a surface. Only when you get closer does the terrain starr to differ, but these 2d textures just kill the effect.

FD, can you look into enabling tesselation in ED?

Good luck. They barely managed to get the planet generation system to work as is, considering console hardware limitations (and average PC hardware considering what they're trying to do) and constantly battling tradeoffs between quality and performance just to get the planets working, never mind the systems on top of it. As the system is further optimised down the road and hardware gets more powerful we may see features and improvements like that, but I wouldn't expect it soon™

This processing is offloaded to the graphics card.

The planet and ground textures should not be this bad.

Somebody messed up.

OP - can you put some screenshots of what you mean, because i don't get this feeling at all. The ground looks pretty solid to me.

Do you have terrain generation over to the right on the slider?

Everything is maxed. While driving the ground looks like a simple texture on the ground. It has no depth. Like the ground is just painted on the surface.

At times the ground on a planet surface looks like WoW on absolute lowest settings, it's just... flat... (thats when the terrain isn't breaking and your SRV is driving below the actual painted terrain surface).

Personally I’m impressed by how the ground can look now:

Looks a lot like dry ground to me. This is on the PS4.

I'm just shaking my head, after four years of trying to drag FDev to understand, and getting constantly beaten by the fanboi bats, that's as much enthusiasm as I can muster now.

Tessallation won't happen - at least not in any way that's worth a damn, because as you've rightly pointed out this game is being throttled by the consoles lack of power, the game will only proceed graphically acording to Sony and Microsofts whims.

*cue fanbois who say that just isnt true, even when it evidently is - that PS4 picture looks like the graphical bumpmaps of 10 years ago

I agree, we have been console bound for some time now.

+1

If they can do it, do it.
It can always be an option to disable for rigs/consoles that can't do it.

I own a potato laptop, and an older rig, but I'm happy to see more detail options, providing they're optional.

Win/win... Except FD loses because they have to implement it. Lol

:)

The lowest common denominator would be the PC minimum requirements, not consoles.
