Horizons Planet POI *** Bugged ***????

I'm going to be flagging this to FD as I think there is a possible bug lurking here...

I've been trying like crazy to understand how to find POI on planets. AFAIK it is not required, but I loaded an ADS and DDS just in case, and headed out to a metal-rich planet with a few settlements on it. I flew around in low orbit in SC until I saw something that looked interesting.

I descended down towards the surface, dropping out of SC on the way. At about 4 km altitude, I saw the edge of two blue circles. I headed towards one of them, and it was a small high security base with skimmers. After half an hour messing around on the surface in the SRV, I took off again. Sure enough, the blue circle was present, but now was present to 20+ km. Hmm...... OK...

So there I am flying around, and I climb above 28 km or so, but in normal space. The POIs disappeared. I descended below 28 km... nothing. Below 10 km... nothing. Below 4 km... they came back. OOOKKK...

Here is a possible bug: I SC above the planet surface, climbing to 100 km altitude. I'm above the settlement that had the blue circle. I drop down to the surface, glide fails as I'm straight down on top of the settlement, and... no blue circle. I fly around the base barn-storming it. Nothing. Nada. Zip. No blue circles. I try again. Nothing.

The blue circles seemed to have disappeared after I SC out, and would not return. I tried for a couple of hours, same result.

Also, are we really expected to look for POIs in normal space at 4 km altitude? It would take WEEKS to find anything (possibly) even if we flew an optimized polar orbit!

I think everything resets after going to SC and back out again.
That means you get new POIs.

It's the same as with logging out and in again. If you are at a POI and you log iut and in again it's gone.

I also think it takes some time to load in the POI locations to be able to see them with the ship.

I generally find one after going straight ahead for 2-3 mins.

One time I went straight away from a settlement and had no POIs in front of me. After a minute i turned around and there was one behind me. Hence my thinking of the load in time.

Interesting... I did wonder about loading, but this was a base and definitely had a POI. Subsequent times I was overhead pointing my weapons at it (lol) but no POI.

I shall try again!

Was it a base or a permanent Settlement? Because out of my expierience POIs vanish after logging in or out or SCing in and out.

Maybe you had a Settlement. Settlements don't have a POI circle.

POI's are generated per instance. If you enter SC you are in a new instance, so the POI's vanish and the encounters for SC start generating, USS etc. Drop out of SC near a planet and new POI's for that instance generate, but keep in mind POI's aren't associated with settlements, they are associated with encounters, events and missions! If the new instance didn't generate an encounter associated with that settlement, survival pods, missions etc there's no reason why a POI will appear for that settlement. The POI's are generated randomly, there's no reason why a new POI should appear in a particular place after entering and leaving SC, it's just a few buildings. I have come across plenty of settlements with no POI's associated, and others where they are, it's just the RNG gods at work.

Huh - OK! This looked like it was definitely associated with the area (it was a secure area protected by skimmers, and had a beacon of some kind). It was in the middle of nowhere.

I'm heading out to try this again, so I'll keep randomness in mind! Thanks!
