Planet terrain downgraded?

Has the planet terrain been downgraded? I have everything on ultra, the game looks amazing in VR, however for some reason the terrain mesh on planets looks very poor compared to when I used VR 6/7 months ago. It is almost like the terrain/texture is Medium/Low.

Found a video by Obsidian Ant, apparently there was an issue with mesh/texture downgrades, this was back in 2016, have they still not fixed it?

Do you have any side by side comparisons?

EDIT: Hard to come to a conclusion without some solid evidence of before and after

Obsidian's video shows the side by side comparison. I am definitely seeing a large difference, cliffs and ridges and mountains used to be very defined, now the mesh resolution is much lower.

I'll post a link to Obsidians video when I'm home.

Pretty sure there is a bug which I think will be fixed for 2.4. Can't see the patch notes for the beta though.

Put it to high and see if its better.

Hey Max, I remember something about the options being mixed, Ultra being lower quality than high.. Something (I think) I randomly stumbled across a while back. do you have a link the topic, or do you know which terrain setting needs to be lowered?

Cheers

Sorry, no I don't. If I find it, I will link it here.

Woah. Dude, this was like over a year ago.
I thought you meant something more recent :p

EDIT: If anything, I saw a noticeable improvement in the 2.4 beta both in my rift and 2D

I believe the reason is that they used the geometry to create texture, but after 2.1 the planet surfaces had more complex textures and the the geometry was relaxed as I believe that was causing some serious FPS issues. Unfortunatly you can't really see the textures at a distance, so the geometry looks a bit rounded.

They may have upped it a bit in 2.4 as more optimisations happen they can increase certain graphics options to make them better.

See isn't that the point of having ultra? Anyone suffering FPS issues can run High/Med/Low. Right now it looks like I am running ED on crappy a PC with MED settings, everything else in the game looks stunning, just flat poor mesh and average textures whilst in orbital cruise.

I do hope they can fix it, plenty of us running with machines high spec enough for ultra.

Anyways, thanks everyone, I'll mess around with the settings, am sure I read about High/Ultra being swapped by mistake in one of the patches.

Yep. I 100% agree. As stated It is meant to look better in 2.4 so fingers crossed it will do.

anybody tested with 2.4 yet?

2.4 overall is a very nice improvement, the improvements aren't related to the issue I described, terrain mesh is still rubbish, Ultra looks like the old MEDIUM setting. Apparently the devs are aware of the issue along with the beige colouring.

Have you tweaked the GraphicsConfiguration.xml? The update reset my tweakings. My bad I didn't look at the date of your op.

The all-planets-are-beige problem has been there for ages. If FD cared a jot it'd have been fixed by now. Their earlier code worked and planets werre more varied.

Agree with your comment - Ultra should be all the bells and whistles even if it crushes your average PC. Ultra is for high-end PC's.

Ever since the beige moons first appeared whenever I drive my SRV around I keep expecting to come across Wallace and Gromit in their rocket ship having a picnic.

I agree the PC needs an Ultra setting independent from the Console engine.

At the very least some g antialiasing. This is the only game I own I see jaggies and crawlies in (retro ones notwithstanding).

It is independent to the consoles. My machine makes the game look far superior to any of the consoles. I wish people would stop blaming consoles as it has nothing to do with them.
