Planet Zoo: Arid Animal Pack Releasing 20 June 🐪

Long term, the remaining animals all have equal value to me. Like it or not, both African animals and ungulates are very common in zoos, so these additions will be useful when you're making new zoos in the future and want to switch things up. You're not always going to want to have an Scimitar Horned Oryx or Gemsbok for your more arid species, so having the ability to switch it up with an Addax is always nice. Same pretty much goes for the other animals as well. For me, they have that life-extending quality. It will allow me to switch things up when I'm working on new projects and I always appreciate that.
I've come to learn that every animal, even if I initially didn't care for it, was important or added something nice. In most areas, I now have enough species to not use every species each time
However, there is a part of me that would have liked this pack to have been more than just an African-centred pack. As much as I agree that Africa is a vast place with many different habitats and animals, I also think that so far the game already had quite a good representation of it. It's a continent with animals you can always add more of, and each addition would be valuable.
I think all of us do, man. At the same time, I like the roster
The only thing that I personally find important is how you phrase your opinion. You can hide behind the fact that this is a company, but the people reading your posts are the devs that are working on these packs. And they're humans like you and me, so if you act like a jerk and are rude about it, then don't be surprised that your opinion isn't going to be valued or listened to. People don't magically become soulless robots when they start their working day. At the end of the day, we're all free to do what we want, but if you want your opinion to be valued and listened to, try to do it in a way that doesn't make it easily (and if you ask me, rightfully) dismissible.
This is what bothers me and I try to express. I'm just not the best at phrasing myself, so you essentially expressed it better
When it comes to "animal x wasn't included so it must mean it will come later", there's no way for us to know. We have a tiny window in their decision making process thanks to the meta-wishlist and dev-journals; but we're looking at the top of the iceberg when it comes to it. So making conclusions that certain animals might never come based on it not being in a pack it is suited well for is as pointless as drawing conclusions that it will come in a next pack as a headliner. Same goes for going as far as saying that an omission of an animal means that we're getting another year of support. We just... don't know.
I've come to learn that not every animal will make it in. If they never come then so be it. But if they do, then that's great

Well here we are again, another divided opinion DLC lol I myself am a bit torn as to how I feel about it, all the animals included are ones that I wanted in game but also feel like other animals would have been better for the given slots, I feel like it should have had a bit more regional diversity throw in a couple more critters from Australia, North America, or Mongolia, although the creatures from the deserts and arid places of Africa are the most recognized aside from Australia so I can see why they did that, know to the animals we got in this DLC:
Dromedary Camel: A given it was going to be in the pack and I was almost positive it was going to be the flagship animal for the pack, a necessary inclusion and a no brainer.
African Crested Porcupine: One of the top requested animals for the game, best decision they made and one of my top desired animals.
Dama Gazelle: I see not to many people are thrilled or are indifferent about this one but I am excited these guys were included they were on my top list of desired inclusions in the game, obscure it seems to most people yes but I figured when this pack came the hoofstock species for it would either be the addax or the Dama, they are endangered and are a unique gazelle species appearance wise and I love there coat.
Addax: As I stated above I knew it was either going to be these guys or the Dama but I was leaning more towards the Addax because of the recognition, but I did not think we would get both, I am happy with them a necessary inclusion and a given to me they would have made it into this DLC.
Black Rhino: These guys were not even on my radar for an inclusion in a Arid Pack, I'm glad there here and wanted them but definitely was not even thinking of them in terms of Arid dwelling animals.
Somalis Wild Ass: These guys were not on my personal radar for inclusion in the pack, but a good inclusion.
Sand Cat: Hard not to have a desire for these guy for there cuteness, a good inclusion not my top pick but a good one and one that I suspected to be an inclusion.
Horned Viper: Again was not on my radar, I forgot these guys existed, but a unique serpent and overall good inclusion.
Know what I believe would have been overall better for diversity of geography and species wise. I would have swapped three of these animals out for other ones, my picks would be the Wild Ass, Addax/Dama, Black Rhino and my other inclusions would be the Greater Bilby, Greater Road Runner, and the Hamadras Baboon and I would have swapped the Viper for the Thorny Devil, Horny Toad, or the Pancake Tortoise, but like I said not upset at the inclusions I'm glad for what we got and can see why we got them, just think they could have diversified the geography a bit. Overall I'm pleased.

Hayo Zookeepers!

Things are heating up in Planet Zoo with the new Planet Zoo: Arid Animal Pack, coming to a Steam Store near you on 20 June alongside Free Update 1.14!

Under the harsh heat of the desert, life still arises and persists. Look out over the dunes and through the sands to discover some miraculous creatures who have adapted to the difficult conditions of these scorching lands.

Be on the lookout for a Dromedary Camel wandering across the desert, while the elegant Addax and Dama Gazelle hunt for edible shrubs, grasses and leaves to snack on. Peer a little closer to the ground and you might catch a glimpse of the prickly African Crested Porcupine, or the shy and elusive Sand Cat. The Black Rhino can also be found munching on leafy plants, branches and fruit, while the well-adapted Somali Wild Ass rests in the shade to get some refuge from the scorching sun. Rounding out the cast is the sleek and impressive Desert Horned Viper, our Exhibit animal for this pack.

The Arid Animal Pack is a celebration of the fauna living in the arid lands, with 8 impressive animals that all have ways to overcome the hardships of the heat.

@Swiftie_Midnights_, as out resident porcupine expert and #1 fan of them, then I have a question: will you be the community's porcupine supplier? Breeding them and putting some on the market so that there is a nice supply of them?

Also, y'all think they'll have colormorphs?
oh course!!! if frontier give porcupine it means it's all on me! So I'm going to make all the porcupines come directly to my zoo maybe if you will be nice I will give you few 😂 😂

and I think they gonna have albino variation and maybe also little changes like maybe one more dark one more brown one more pale

We'll ask Steam to remove your game license
Even that won't stop me😂 you just gonna have to deal with it:p

I'll rate the pack:
  • Crested Porcupine 10/10: Highly requested and unique animal
  • Dromedary 10/10: One of the ones I noticed was missing from the base game. I kept forgetting we didn't have it. It was in the other games and is critical for Middle East sections. It has in-game art.
  • Sand Cat 10/10: It is amazing to have a little cat!! The serval still has my heart, but the sand cat is also adorable, adds Middle East rep, and gives my hope for other tiny fuzzballs like that Pallas's Cat, Margay, and Fishing Cat. Yes, I am a crazy cat lady.
  • Addax 8/10: One of my favorite antelope that I missed from ZT2. It is a conservation icon with cool swirly horns. I love it.
  • Somali Wild Ass: 9/10: This donkey is adorable and a favorite of some active community members. I'm happy for them and myself that it was added. The wild equid roster feels complete.
  • Black Rhino 4/10: I didn't need or want another rhino, but at least it was popular. It's also different from other things in this pack, endangered, was in both previous games, and has in-game art. Those are a few good reasons.
  • Dama Gazelle 2/10: A little redundant with the addax, but another gazelle is cool. It also has a good conservation story. In a different pack, I might give it a 6/10. It was actually on my radar. I welcome it.
  • Horned Viper 6/10: A new WE animal would have been cool, especially a bird, but it is nice to have a new snake. It is kinda cute.
  • Scenario: 10/10: Career scenarios are WAY more fun
  • Pack Name 2/10: They are all arid animals, I guess. The "Sahara Animal Pack" would have gone over way better. If your goal was to provoke the forums, stir up controversy, and build discussion/excitement for other desert animals (the last part is definitely a plus), then I would give it a 9/10
  • Overall animal composition: 3/10 for lack of variety, but the animals have high ratings by themselves.
While I agree with those that would have liked to see a baboon, tortoise, and bird, I still like a lot of the roster.

Question for the Devs: To what extent do y'all make it a personal mission to have the packs never match predictions? Is it actually a goal, or is it an accident? I don't want to post my favorite pack ideas if they will be avoided on purpose.

I see every DLC pack as a gift. I love the anticipation and predicting what it might be, and getting hopeful for one thing or another, but I don't hold any expectations or strong beliefs such as 'it must follows these rules' or 'it didn't represent X enough'. Overall the packs build up to a balanced whole and they aren't done yet, so I am a bit surprised at the lack of chill. For the amount of work they must take to make, for the price of a couple of coffees, the value is pretty incredible, and aren't all animals gorgeous anyway? Why are we choosing to dislike any of them?

With that said, here are my ratings of the Arid pack, in order of favourites:

Somali Wild Ass 10/10 - my favourite in this pack because I love these animals and as someone else here mentioned, their plight is really sad. The more awareness raised the better. They're incredibly beautiful to me and based on how the artists at Frontier rendered the Przewalski's Horse, I bet they are going to look amazing. Cannot wait to see their animations. Omg the foals. Their stripey little legs. The colour gradation on their manes. They just please the eye and perhaps there's a part of me that relates to the donkey's reluctant soul.

Black Rhinosceros 10/10 - another animal with an important conservation message. I campaigned in Vietnam to educate people on not consuming rhino horn, so these creatures hold a special place in my heart. They are very different from the other rhino species and I know they're not cuddly or cute, but to me they're very interesting, greatly underappreciated animals.

Sand Cat 10/10 - I was a little surprised by this pick and also surprised by how happy I was when I saw it was included. I didn't realise how much I would love them! Great to have a tiny kitteh and I really love building tiny enclosures, they pose a very different challenge and force me to be a bit more creative, so I'm looking forward to thinking about how to integrate them. I think they'll fit well nearby the meerkats and fennec foxes, I could make a miniature desert town, gasp, okay now I'm really excited.

Porcupine 10/10 - I mean, what's not to love? An iconic zoo species, very funny creatures, so much personality. They're going to bring some much needed small and soft (and spiny) in the middle of all those hooves.

Addax 10/10 - A very beautiful antelope and another critically endangered species. I don't think we can have too many antelopes or too much hoofstock, sorry haters! I think a whole antelope diversity section in a zoo would be really cool, looking at their different horn shapes and colourations. I'm not obsessed with any particular antelope, there are many beautiful ones that we don't have yet, but I think this is a fine choice.

Dama Gazelle 9/10 - a very very beautiful gazelle and all the same about the addax applies. For some reason my heart just isn't as excited and I'm not sure why, perhaps because I don't recall seeing them in real life, they aren't found in many UK zoos (just one I think). However it will be great to see how the gazelle art looks a few years on from the Thompson's and I will definitely be using this animal, I'm sure they'll grow on me as I become more familiar with them. And critically endangered again, props on your conservation focused picks this time around Frontier!

Dromedary 8/10 - purely personal preference, I'm just not in love with camels! But I do look forward to seeing them spit on the guests and no doubt this model shows how far the artwork has come along at Frontier in just a few short (well, kinda long and traumatic) years.

Desert Horned Viper 6/10 - meh, I'm just not that into the smaller exhibits because we can't really see them very well most of the time. But props for the snake and reptile people, I don't begrudge you your lovely longbois!

Overall 73/100 and I don't actually mind the African / Sahara roster. We had the Africa scenery pack so this fits nicely. I'm sure other packs will balance out other areas. I'd particularly love more wildlife from India and Japan because I usually like to create geographically accurate zones in my zoos and they are lacking, but I am calmly excited about what the future will bring.
