Leaf just wants everyone to go down memory lane
I remember beta testing the game and having my peafowl chickens get out of the habitat at the same single point and I could not fathom how. And I see today ( well when I last played my Alphabet 'A' zo) the same silly thing that cannot be explained happens, like my African Penguins swimming out of bounds, despite a wall of thick mud and rock separating their new location with the actual water.
I reviewed it on Steam back almost at release in Dec 2019 with Steam recording my play time now as follows:
23.5 hrs last two weeks / 1,844.0 hrs on record (451.7 hrs at review time)
I added to it June 2023. And even now, I can honestly say it is my go to game. I have 15 games I have played since my reinstall last August but I can honestly say Planet Zoo is the game I go to most of the time when I fancy gaming with the others for that 5 minute fun break between brain work.
As long as Planet Zoo continues to work for at least a few more years, I am not overly concerned that support may be being weaned off towards other games. I still have a long ways to go before Planet Zoo might end up in the pile I put the games I don't play anymore.
A comparison of my top 5 games played on Steam. - The next 2 haven't been touched since 2015.
Planet Zoo - 1,844 hours - Last Played ( earlier today )
Shapez - 223.9 hours - Last Played Apr 2023 ( Been playing the Shapez 2 demo when available instead )
Two Point Hospital - 154.2 hours - Last Played Apr 2023 - Have played Two Point Campus off and on since then
Cities Skylines - 244.4 hours - Last Played Feb 2023 - Tried Cities Skylines 2 but my computer can't handle it
Valheim - 209 hours - Last Played Dec 2022 - I bore of combat games sooner than non combat games.
Why do I enjoy Planet Zoo so much ?
Well, it has several elements of enjoyment in one game. What mood I am in will be highlighted in what I do that game session.
Business Management - Trading out excess animals and clearing as much of the stored animals as I can by jumping through zoos and seeing if any need replacing etc.
Landscaping/Layouts - Updating/Creating a new zoo with new habitats etc.
Cuteness - Literally just spending a few minutes looking at baby animals to screenshot for a few people I know who like that stuff
Creativity - With a sudden spur of inspiration I'll start a whirlwind of creations - How my Dry Wall Collection began.
Success - The need to eventually have a successful set of zoos housing every animal possible,
Genetics/Genealogy - The need to breed different visuals for each animal to understand how it works, whilst keeping to the safe and not inbreeding playstyle.
Jurassic World Evolution 2 comes close to this list, but I tried 1 and didn't enjoy it as much. But with a 75% sale on for 2, I might consider it and see if it improves in areas I wasn't too happy with.
What would I play if I can't play Planet Zoo anymore ?
I can honestly say at the moment I don't know. If Planet Zoo 2 comes out when it stops working then clearly a straight swap so no issues there. But if not, it would depend if a successor surfaces ( I tried them before Planet Zoo came out to no joy ). All I can do is hope that if none surfaces that I will have one of my other games swing to the top of the playing list to keep me amused until one does. There are a few games I am interested in and the first month or two of release is usually telling if it becomes a semi permanent game in my go to game arsenal.
