Planetary Graphics Comparison - Befor and After 3.0

I still wonder why ED couldn't do close fly by over planet in the stream. It would have taken only a few secs more. I hope textures are as sharp on the ground as now.

It was fully explained by one of the devs in a forum post, updated lighting system interacting badly with the material system. Didn't stop people from moaning still or inventing their own theories. Which is why many devs probably find it a waste of time and energy posting on the forums.

I think the fact that this BUG or whatever you want to call it was allowed to remain in the game for over a year is what ticked people off.

It is still a head scratcher that a game developer would allow the entire look of their game to be altered by a mistake and then just ignore the problem for what in video game time is an ETERNITY!

I have plenty of footage of v2.0 planets. :) From orbit, they were certainly vastly better than what we have right now, but from what we have seen so far, the v3.0 planets are significantly superior in just about every way when compared to v2.0 planets.

Here's some v2.0 planets (the second one is Mercury):

(Current surface textures are also a lot better than what we have now. However geometry / geological formation and variation was far better in v2.0)

I noticed in one of you more recent videos you were using some old footage of planetary surfaces and the level of detail on that very tall mountain peak was stunning in comparison to what we have now.

Just the performance of my PC when on planets tells me that my machine isn't working as hard to render stuff now as it once did back in the 2.0 days. Obviously better for those with lower performance machines and consoles, but I spent some respectable cash for the high end gaming rig I use, and I want a spectacle when I run ULTRA across the board. :)

Didn't work like that. They tweeked the shaders because of serious performance issues, frame rates would tank when going to a planet to land on. It made a lot of the planets look very beige, which they couldn't go back on due to the performance issue (this was for both the PC and consoles).

They have had to completely recreate new shaders with the new materials system, which is obviously no small job, and it looks like they have been working on these for some years now (at least when Micheal Brooks mentioned it).

I've just been looking back at some screen shots of 2.0 and the planets looked way better than they do now. I forgot how good they looked. Obviously I'm looking forward to the new planet tech but seriously go check some old screens, you'll probably be as surprised as I was.
