Horizons PLANETARY SCAN JOB

Sure thing.

1) Head to target system, and you have two choices. Scan the nav beacon or use your discovery scanner to determine which planet you need to go to. You'll get a message about which planet it will be.

2) Fly to that planet. When you get close (around 15-20 MM) you will see in your navigation tab a new target called Search Area. Highlight and fly to it. It will move around a few times but just keep following it. Land near the base.

3) Get in the SRV and scan the data access point with the SRV turret.

4) After scanning, get back in your ship and fly back to the station you got the mission from.

5) Turn in the mission and collect your rewards!

I have used the D-scanner but dont tell me what planet is.

Used an Advanced Discovery Scanner as it has "infinite" range. The planet is likely outside the range of the Basic or Intermediate.

An alternate work around is to drop down into normal space and scan the systems nav beacon in case you don't have the cash or a slot open for an Advanced Scanner. To scan the nav beacon, lock onto it and approach to within (I think) 4 km. You will notice the scanning symbol in the lower left display start to spin. Once the scan is complete you will get a message as to where the location is.

Use an Advanced Discovery Scanner .... no doubt this is the most useful for these ... the target planet then shows up in your menu

Don't worry about the cost of the ADS, the credits you recoup from the missions will repay over and over.

Remember to add the ADS to a fire group (right hand menu) and fire it off as soon as you enter the appropriate system.

You then see the target planet in your left hand menu, or in the systems map (as you prefer)

Fly towards it.

When you get close, the mission location, called search area, or search base area (something like that) will show up in your menu. Fly down to it and follow it as it moves around until you get the final fixed location and a visual.

Fly to within about 300 m of the base (too close and you won't be able to work the data unit), land and drive in your SRV for the remainder of the distance.

Target the data point (Which activates as you approach) in the turret of your SRV, press your "download data" (which I have set to secondary fire button of the turret in my fire group menu) and you collect data and complete the mission. Drive back to the ship. You will get a message to say fly back to base.

Fly back to the source base that gave you the mission and collect all the lovely credits ;)

Rinse and repeat. Also fire off the ADS every time you enter a new system to collect extra credits for discovering planets etc. And wonder how you ever survived without a ADS before :)

Edit - ensure your data is not full of other junk .... it's easy to exceed the data limit and be unable to complete the mission ... I usually trim 20% off downloaded data for which I have more than 25 or 30 units.

I've been trying this today. No matter what i do, I can't get a scan of the nav beacon. I've targeted it and flown within METRES of it, yet I get no scanning, no new target for the planet to go to. I have basic scanner, it scans everything else except this damned nav beacon!

Get an ADS !

Alternatively,, get an ADS .....

Or if you wish ...... you can always get yourself an ADS !

You literally have to select the actual nav beacon. It will show up as a white icon on your hud. Select it and it will start the scan. This threw me off a while back as well.

Ok, thanks for the advices. I'm now trying to find a station which sells Advanced Discovery Scanner. I've spent 1 hour travelling to find one so far. Can someone tell me where (I'm currently at Mars High in Sol system).

Ok so this is now driving me insane.

I found and bought advanced scanner on M Gorbachev. I travelled beack to system, and it automatically scanned 5 bodies. I even went to the nav beacon and scanned it. Still no message or mission update teling me which body to go to for planetary scan. What am I doing wrong? Please help me before I abandon this game for another year.

PANIC OVER!

I don't know how. I quit the game, went for a cigarette and a Gin & Tonic, came back and tried again. This time the nav beacon scanned and I got the mission directions! WHO DARES GINS!
