Oh but there is a check I think. Several of them. One if them is the fact that there is eternal war and massacre and killing on this planet. Not everybody is involved directly all the time (some just produce minor parts for the killing tools), but nevertheless... 21st century was one of the worst in our history and I would be surprised if this century will be any better. Other checks are the increase in poverty and inequality and starvation. And then there is the return of old diseases we thought we had under control.
If you view the human population on this sphere as a colony of bacteria then it is clear it has gone totally mad as a species. It is perhaps weird to say this of my own kind but we resemble a destructive virus more than anything else I can think of.
Perhaps hate is indeed a bit strong. Perhaps the feeling is more appropriately described as a feeling of disgust. Despair is also an ingredient.
