Community Event / Creation Planning an alternative to the Buckyball Runs

We have a website!

It's a little bit rough at the moment, which I'll try and fix over time as I delve further into my very rusty memories of html and css :)

Special thanks to robinjb for the images, which he nicely previewed here earlier today :D. Personally I like the whole set - the BRC one I expect to mainly use in spots which have a much smaller logo.

Raiko, you can probably come up with a much better sales blurb for your upcoming race; please let me know and I'll update the site.

robinjb, I'm very happy for you to run some shorter-distance races whenever you can fit them in. The only challenge for me is that I want some longer gaps between races to allow additional A* runs (or scouting for the next race, or something other than racing!), so if you put in too many I'll have to miss some! We will need occasional longer gaps between races, though, around game updates.

Raiko, robinjb, Stern Winter (and anybody else thinking of organising a race), I've put a provisional race schedule on the front page of the website. Please tell me if you'd like any changes, or if you have a clearer idea on dates. I can also set up plenty of @buckyballracing.org.uk forwarding email addresses, if you'd like to use that for race submissions; just PM me the email address you'd like mails forwarded to.

Hry drakhyr ... been meaning to post for ages. LOVE the new site. Good work!

I'm about to start planning my own Bucky Race ... a relatively short (sub 1hr) outpost tour. If I can get my act together then I hope to have this ready to run quite quickly, in which case might I be able to cut in on one of the September slots?

Hi Guys, so the warm up races im planning are not supposed to be the main event, they are short races than can be done in 30 mins. or thereabouts.
to keep the work down I had planned to make them registration free.. so just send the proof zip link after you've ran. and one open/solo unlimited class. there seems to be resistance to just one class. so its still up for discussion.
I particularly want to make a distinction between the main races and these warm ups. hence trying to simplify it.

Drakhyr has sorted me out with a forwarding email BRCWUR@buckyballracing.org.uk so ill get the first warm up race ready to look at later today .. and ive got 2 or 3 on the drawing board. but if anyone wants to to suggest a mini race or warm up pm me.
you can organise them how you want. and we can get you a forwarding mail address to facilitate that, nothings set in stone yet.. so if its a short one, get in touch with me... if its a long one get in touch with Drakhyr

I want more racing. I think you guys want more racing.. I cant wait another 4-8 weeks for it. ive been revving up for bb8 since june. there's always going to be someone on the sadge run, and we cant wait for all of them to get back.
this is a means to get more racing.

heres my proposed first warm up race for next week please pm or post up feedback.

THREAD TITLE:- Buckyball Racing Club presents Warm Up Race 01 'The Pleiades Hip Hop'

The buckyball racing club is pleased to present the first warm up race of the season.
PROPOSED DATE OF RACE (need to discuss, but soon)
RACE TYPE
OPEN/SOLO UNLIMITED
Races are individual timed races that a pilot can run mulitple times during the race time shedule ( usually a week ) to get the best time.
all submitted pilot times are then collated on a board and at the end of the race the winner is the pilot with the best time.

RACE DESCRIPTION
THE PLEIADES HIP HOP
'2 space bums in the ohm horizons bar at HIP 29312 bet each other they could visit the 7 sisters and be back at the station before the bar closed in 30 minutes'

HOW TO TAKE PART:-
START AT OHM HORIZONS HIP 29312 (take screen shot of time before launch)
visit:- (in any order, taking screenshot of time in galmap of each star)
ASTEROPE
CELAENO
MEROPE
STEROPE II
MAIA
PLEIONE
ATLAS (why is this sister a brother?)
FINISH LANDED AT OHM HORIZONS HIP 29312 (take your last screenshot of the time)

send a link or zip of your 9 shots and your pilot name, ship name and time
under the subject BRCWUR01 to BRCWUR@buckyballracing.org.uk
before the end of the race date.

F.A.Q.
Whats going on?
The buckyball racing club warm ups are a chance to tweak your load outs or smash yourself into the toaster rack and generally practice for the main BRC events.
all pilots are welcome and the BRC strives to remain neutral in the galaxy and focuses on racing.

When is the race running?
the race will be open for participants from (need to discuss)
only times submitted within this duration are eligable for the board.

What am i doing again?
Fly your chosen race ship to Ohm horizons in Hip 29312 dock up , make a cup of tea and
plot a course to one of the seven sisters ( the big blue stars in the pleiades nebula )
then take a screenshot showing the time and launch... fly as quickly as you can to your first sister, then when youve got there open up the galmap and take a screenshot, now plot your next jump to another sister, repeat untill youve visited and screen shotted all 7.
now plot a course back to Hip 29312 and land at Ohm horizons, as you touch down an the time comes up take your last screenshot, congratualtions youve just completed the pleides hip hop, lets hope the bar is still open.

What is this farce?... I demand to speak to bucky!

your right of course and we hope the buckyball run will return but buckys not here at the moment... we have a buckybot and he just says one thing 'shut up and race!'

how long should these run?, I was thinking sunday to sunday.. but we could do it Thursday to Thursday or shorten it to just a weekend. I certainly don't want these to run for ages, but obviously we need to allow a decent time for people to race when they normally play.

That might have been me, but don't worry I'm fine with one class. Are you planning to have open/solo on one table, or separate?

I'm definitely up for your race, I've just got to ditch this stupid Type-9. I'd suggest running for either 7 days or 10 days (two weekends), and finishing on a Sunday night either way so that there's a good chance of lots of runners on the last 2 days - Cady City was an awesome place during BBR7, although that might have been mostly thanks to some guy hanging around outside the slot for most of the race. :D

A single weekend race would be okay by me, and certainly short and sweet, but it would be unfair on anyone who struggles to play at weekends, so definitely at least 7 days.

That looks a nice warm up to me - interesting plotting challenge for a short race :)

I am with Raiko on running it for 7+ days and finishing on a Sunday. What about a Saturday 00:00 GMT start and finish 9 days later on Sunday at 23:59 GMT? This gives 2 full weekends for people to find time to race.

EDIT: and I am picking up my pace heading back - all of this race talk is making me home sick ;)

if you think the load in time on a open server could significantly effect the result , and I guess your right if its seconds. then ill do a separate open and solo unlimited.
for when to run it ...im thinking this friday to the following Thursday midnight GMT so in a few days.. the crazy thing is ive been at home for months but ive got to go away the 8th-10th for wedding barge action so I cant board update then... and it needs daily board updating at least.

yeah im cool with sunday to sunday it seems more natural a span.
I appreciate 2 weekends gives more leeway but like ive mentioned I don't want them to suck too much time out of the main race focus they'll be plenty of these .. I hope, so people shouldn't feel bad about missing them. they are just warm ups for old and new to dip into.

I don't think that it will make the slightest difference for this race, and I'll be in open regardless, but if you ran an identical race out of a busy system like Lave and back, then solo would probably be a much easier / safer option, just something to think about. I'll try to run everything in open whatever the race.

the warm ups I do ill be running from high tech system where its easy to change a small ships build and on the edge of populated space.
so accessible within the bubble but outside any pp zone definitely.

Right, updated provisional schedule:

When - What - Who
early August - Warm Up Race 1: Pleiades Hip Hop - robinjb
late August - Bootlegger Challenge - Raiko
early September - Warm Up Race 2 - robinjb
late September - tbc - Alec Turner
early October - Warm Up Race 3 - robinjb (?)
late October - The Kessel Run - Stern Winter
November - The Galactic Rally - Raiko
early December - Warm Up Race 4 - robinjb (?)
late December / early January - Festive Special - drakhyr

Again, all subject to change if anybody has any disagreements, or prefers to change to a different slot (and at some point we'll need to find a slot for 1.4 to come in!). I can set up any number of forwarders to provide race organisers with @buckyballracing.org.uk email addresses to receive submissions, just let me know by PM (or email) what email address to forward to.

It's amazing how quickly this has turned into me not having to organise anything for months - thanks all! :D

that looks cool Drakhyr, remember you've got the a* challenge to run, and if you want to do a mini race or warm up just come up with something. I don't want to look like im taking over so if one of you guys wants to run 1 or 2 or more of the shorter events get in touch.
I guess what ill do is if no one wants to take a slot from me within a couple of weeks of the warm up time ill sort one out.
mine are going to be warmups but if anyone wants to do something sub 1 hr and call it a mini race.. or just do a sub hr one and call it whatever get in touch with me or drakhyr .
if anyone needs a flyer or map doing like the one I posted in the spoiler again get in touch.. I just need the text and I can knock one up for you. or if you want to do it yourself I can let you have the font and logos.
I can also do you designs for stickers or tshirts or teapots if anyone wants to do those as prizes for their events.
so this Friday to next Fridays good for me for a warm up. I hate to sound lame but im off to a wedding weekend of the 8th 9th, so we can do sunday to sunday if someone else wants the handle the submission sand board update toward the end.

Right, updated provisional schedule
That looks great Drakhyr.

and at some point we'll need to find a slot for 1.4 to come in
If Michael Brooks or any of the Devs are following this thread, then I'd really appreciate it if you could delay any possible introduction of insectoid aliens who pull you out of witch space and then dissect your ship with beam weapons until after the Galactic Rally. Thanks. ;)

Hey, as well as organising this whole thing, and even setting up a web-page for us, you've also kept the A* Challenge going, so thank you! :)

The Galactic Rally Update:

Now that I'm back in the Bubble, I can check out the distances involved in both my races more easily. I'll post up my provisional route for the Galactic Rally in a few days once I've checked that the distances for each stage aren't too long, and when I've connect the dots for the two easier routes.

I'll need to check out some of the more demanding stages before finalising the route, so I'll be departing the Bubble again straight after the Bootlegger challenge. Hopefully I'll be able to sprint back to take part in the other races, and I will definitely be back for at least one attempt at The Kessel Run. :)

My proposed dates for the Galactic Rally would be to start at 00:00GMT on the morning of Saturday 31st Nov 3301, and finish at 00:00GMT in the night of Sunday 6th December 3301. This giving runners 37 days to complete 25 stages, if they attempt the extreme route.

The longest stages will be around 5000LY long, and at least one of those (the first crossing of the Formidine Rift) will require a winding route due to the impossibility of plotting a straight line route. In order to ensure that anyone with a couple of hours per day playtime can take part, runners will be able to "stop the clock" enroute, unlike in the A* challenge, but this will be limited to once per day, and each stage will need to be completed within 72 hours (real-time) of when the previous stage was completed.

This will mean that for the more formidable stages like crossing the Rift, you'll not be handicapped if you have less spare time than another runner, but it also means you'll be able to take a break in an easier stage if you find something really shiny to explore enroute.

I've been adjusting my plan as I've read the blogs of Galactic Rim explorers as, for example, it doesn't appear to be possible to push 'south' of the Crab Nebula as nobody has discovered a crossing of the void between the Perseus and Outer Arms in that region. I'm really hoping that the extreme route will be playable in Haulers and Type-6's so I'll pay close attention to the distances involved when I check out the Formidine Rift, and also the area around the Skull and Crossbones Nebula.

The "B" Class race will be entirely within the 10KLY Circle shown in MAP-01 of Erimus' Galactic Mapping Project. The "C" Race will really just be a tour of local Nebulae and POI's.

I have a thought for a warm up race, so I'll look at doing that for Warm Up Race 3.

robinjb, I will happily do the leaderboard etc for the last day or two of Warm Up Race 1, so that we can satisfy those who would like it to run into a second weekend :). Let me know what date you're planning for it to start (Friday / Saturday / Sunday) and I'll update the website.

Even the Community Goals are going Buckyball-style!

Latest community goal at Bast, as part of the efforts to cure the Cerberus Plague, is to bring supplies of Heike Ceremonial Tea.

Small quantities, so small ships work best.
Fast runs required to get the best effect.
125 light years between stations.
Starports both ends.
Even a double planet at the Heike end for Alot-style approaches.

If there wasn't already a warm up race planned for the coming weekend, I'd be so tempted to set up a snap BRC race :D

I'm really hoping that Bast doesn't get quarantined, as Snake Gin is on the list for my race - and I really don't want to replace it with Centauri Mega-gin!! ;)

Eeeps!

I disappeared for a couple of months...and I come back (well technically I'm just visiting) to a reshuffle?

I'm still racing though... except this time it's on Earth and in cars (The Crew, Test Drive Unlimited 2 etc). So yeah, gonna be on Earth in the present for the moment :)

Ps: Sorry Rankaze for disappearing. The racing bug bit and I ran with it :) I'll probably get around to running the PP test when I'm back in ED again.

btw great job Drakhyr!

Good to see you Foxtwo, yeah unfortunately Ez is taking a break from the buckyball run and as he left us all hooked on racing like electronic crack addicts weve got togeather to create a pale imitation of his great runs.
we all hope you've time to take part in the main events.

Great, that's very cool Drakhyr, and if you can handle the board for WUR01 when im away at the end of it fantastic. lets do it this weekend.
Ill get you another version of all the text today and we can finalise it and make a thread later for promotion.
