Came across this old post after trying to find out what I'm doing wrong. I've been to a dozen platinum hotspots in the Eagle Nebula. No platinum anywhere. At first, after seeing this post, I thought it was because I was looking at both metallic and metal rich rings and then I switched to just metallic rings. At each place I used 20-30 prospectors and haven't found a single bit of platinum, even in rings with no hot spots. I've been to at least 30 over the last couple days and I'm giving up on my idea of helping out the run down factions way out here with platinum mining. I think platinum mining outside the bubble is somehow bugged. Maybe it's some obscure game mechanic. I dunno.
Wow!
That's hard to believe......are you sure you've not scanned a Metal Rich ring by mistake or you've missed the hotspot altogether.
I'm currently out in the Sanguineous Sector of the Galaxy on my return trip from Xibalba.
Couple of things of note:-
In order to fund my Carrier's next trip into the black, I'll always check out EVERY Metallic Ring I come across......just Metallic Rings!
Scanning these Rings I'm looking for Platinum hotspots only, no hotspot I move on!
If I find a hotspot, I'll jump my Carrier into the System & park it next to the Planet, dock my Explorer Ship & swap for my Mining Cutter.
Then I target the hotspot & aim for an area that's between 70-100km from the centre of the hotspot, when I'v dropped from SC.
Then it's fill yer boots............It's never failed & it's rare that I don't get two 'roids from three prospects that don't contain Platinum or Osmium which I also collect.
Everything else is left.....unless I hit a Core 'roid, that gets blown & mined,
Don't like telling player's they're doing something wrong!.........but if you go to a Platinum Hotspot in a Metallic Ring & can't find a 'roid containing Platinum, then......
Just a thought......you're not just Core Mining are you cmdr? 'cos laser mining is what gets me my Platinum.
