Played 200+ hours...Lost everything...Was partly fun but now it's over

Over 1000 hours logged, no grind yet, earned billions, blown billions, still no grind, restarted in the newbie Sidey multiple times now due to MY own stupidity, no grind so far, despite being in an Anaconda(which I had fully A graded at one point before I went exploring again) and having more than enough in the bank to buy a Cutter to go with my Anaconda! Still have done any grinding though. Funny, the game YOU find so grinding and boring, I've yet to see any grinding in, nor do I get bored.

Then again, I am of the generation that played the original Elite, I was 18 when it was released, so to me, a true sandbox game like this, it's something I love. No quest to follow, no storyline I can't change except for the obvious choice of good/bad/neutral(IF I've given any choice at all!), no mindless grinding for days and weeks and months on end to get that elusive Top Gear from raids, killing the same boss mob over and over and over to get that gear, only to see it rendered useless with the next expansion...Christ on a crutch, I wonder how I can handle those games sometimes, I mean a great storyline is fun and all, but it NEVER FREAKING CHANGES! You know what the definition of insanity is? Doing the same actions repeatedly and expecting a different outcome...welcome to the standard video game formula, where that's ALL you do, repeat the same actions over and over....I'm good with E: D and not doing the same thing constantly, being allowed to do whatever the hell tickles my fancy whenever it does so. Also why I'm looking forward to Star Citizen, same format in play there, sandbox, do whatever the hell you want whenever the hell you want, no storyline dragging you around by the short and curlies.

I know how you feel, I was always saddened by other games because it had a limitation to WHERE I could go (and I didn't even know what Eve was before I got Eltie dangerous) with Elite? I have the entire galaxy to explore. I was satisfied with games that had continents and then ended at vast oceans, in elite dagnerous I have entire planets to explore, and all to soon the gas giants and the atmospheric worlds will be accessible. I only hope to have my Corvette and Federal Gunship when that time comes, particularly the Federal Gunship.

I however do not agree with you on Star Citizen, Star Citizen is a closed system which means you won't be able to explore the entire galaxy and so is in my opinion inferior to Elite. I also really don't like the look of their ships, love the look of their graphics but not the ships and it is critically important to love the ship you're going to be exploring with.

Not sure which game you are playing mate, but you can't make money in this game without grinding.

Playing the game for 1000 hours is a grind. There aren't enough variations between activities to do anything but grind.....

So you never did trade runs between 2 stations? yet you have billions????

Then you must have exploited the trading of rares when they were making ridiculous profits before they limited them, else you ground out seeking luxuries or some other exploited system, of which there have been many.

There is no way you can make a fortune in this game without grinding, it is simply not possible.

You also sound like you think i am obsessed with progression MMO games, just because i dare to criticize your beloved game, which i am not. However, it seems your imagination manages to make up for some of the great void in gameplay this game suffers from, in which case power to you. I myself prefer tangible means of enjoying my games as well as using my mind, as do many others.

Another one.

Stop playing.

Nuff said.

You know, I think you people just expect way too much of this game.

ITS OK TO MOVE ON.
ITS OK IF PEOPLE MOVE ON.
ITS OK IF FUNDS DRY UP AND NOBODY PLAYS ANYMORE.
ITS OK...
Go and give the people you love a big hug and tell them you're sorry for neglecting them for space pixels.

ITS OK TO ENJOY SOMETHING AND THEN LET GO.

Seriously, get some counselling.

The game is special in a good way.

The game is also in need of something(s).

I get the OP and hope expansions help in the future.

Yep great post OP. Was expecting to see a rage thread but it's balanced and honest. The sentiments you mention echoes the experience that I have seen with my friends that bought the game on release and earlier. I had 16 real life friends playing this now I'm the only one that boots it up albeit very infrequently. They all said similar things to you. Mostly boiling down to simplistic bare boned gameplay that requires a lot of grind to get anywhere. They are all working family men with an hour here and there like myself and the game just doesn't do for those people.

Maybe it shouldn't? Who knows.

So this is my first time opening a thread on any type of forum so please go easy on me.
The only reason I am posting this is because one day I hope the game can become what I hope it will be and maybe one more thread on top of everything will be the straw that breaks the camels back and make the devs realize.

So what happened.

Started game.Learning the basics was really really fun.
Did bounty missions.
Did trading.
Did smuggling.
Did combat zones.
Did mining.
Did Mining RES hunting.

So after I did all of this I started to get bored with the game.So I decided to grind a python.and boy was it a grind.
Anyways Got the python and fitted it out(E rated, not very high).put a few weapons on and off I go again.
This was fun for a couple hours but eventually it also started to falter.I know the golden rule.Don't fly what you can't afford.See the thing is I was so bored from the endless grind that I didn't really care anymore I just needed something to do.Anything.Went up against a python and I lost my ship and everything. For a moment my heart stopped and I just knew I messed up bad.And I just sat at my pc screen staring at it.But then something happened.Initially I felt anger at myself for making such a silly mistake and all the time I wasted. Then I started feeling sad because I knew the grind will be real. But then something truly amazing happened.I realized that this game is for a very select few players.I had my fun with it.I learned a lot.I raged a lot.I was exhilarated a lot. But,and this is a big but.I also wasted a lot.A lot of time grinding, trading and mining specifically. And as I reflected on my time with elite I realized something quite horrific. If a game causes me to have to watch a video or series to get rid of boredom the game is doing something wrong and its failing in its sole purpose...to entertain me....This might just be the event that finally sets me free from elite and alas I think my life will be reclaimed.I got the joystick.I got voice attack.I went all out for elite. So why am I writing this exactly? To you devs,You have an amazing game. However it lacks something.I don't think it's necessarily content or bug fixes(although seriously get your act togheter on the bugs). It lacks a soul...How do you add a soul to a game?I don't know. But the biggest thing I can think of is other people.See the problem is that this is fun and all.But it gets really lonely. It is so difficult to have any meaningful interaction with other players. For a game that is advertised as a MMO this truly isn't MMO.I'm not so sure it would even qualify as multiplayer with the instancing ect.The other side of this coin is its always online. With an offline game I can play as I want.So if I want to skip the grind and just go straight to anaconda I can with cheats and trainers.Spending the 1 hour a day and 6 hours a weekend I have available is not fun if I have to grind it.The play style is in my hands. But not with an always online.SO we truly have the worst of both worlds.A relatively poorly implementded MMO and a relatively poorly implemented single player expierience.I hope it gets fixed because I want this game to be a huge success and this is something I have been hoping for for years. But for now I think I am going to take a break for a couple of years.Don't take this as a rant because it really isn't.Its simply my expierience with your game that I am giving you.I certainly had a lot of fun and it was worth the 50 bucks.however I am not buying the horizons or the following expansions for the above reason.

I don't know how but please fix this as I want this genre to succeed.Pardon my english it's not my first language.

Fly safe commanders and remember don't fly what you can't afford.

I will see elite again in a couple of years to see how it matured:)
I want to point out a thing that maybe can lift your spirit a bit...

Notice the second thing in your title 200+ hours, the game did keep you in it for that long, you felt it was worth playing that long, that's quite a bit more then many other games now a days, and honestly, what MMO to compare it there, doesn't get boring after 200+ hours? and then becomes a task of finding enjoyment where you can.

So it is totally ok to get frustrated, to stop playing the game, that is absolutely and totally fine, take a break, return when you think more is added that you will enjoy, find something else to enjoy :)

Very balanced post OP.
Hope you come back in 6 months time and pick the game up again. Play around with it a bit - pop yourself back to a few million credits (a nice Viper or Cobra) have fun doing it and try not to grind. To avoid the grind and the feeling of boredom why not join a player group that covers your timezone? You get people to play with and perhaps crucially objectives to avoid falling into the grind pattern.

There are pretty much player groups to suit every taste these days not just pew-pew shoot them ups.

Hoe to see you post again soon.

I am playing self imposed "iron man mode" on my 2nd account. I am getting used to getting the character going (@20Mcr - nicely fitted out Type-6 for scouting or trading depending on how the character is turning out). and have to reset because in a split second I make a dumb choice and lose the Type-6. One day I'll be good at this game :)

This - there is no game which entertains me for such a long time without me getting bored and stop to come back later. TS shelf it for a while - and I can almost guarantee you you will like it better when you come back. I stopped playing from June 2015 till two weeks ago ( not bc of a single misfortune but general fedupness ) - and lo and behold I like it as much as I used to b4 the grind got to me...

To the OP...

May I suggest that when you come back, that you make a point of not grinding for anything, and enjoy the game.

If you feel the need to grind something, then make a rule for yourself that you have a maximum continuous number of hours that you do something repetitive (don't make that too high), before going on to do something else. That way you're less likely to get really bored, and enjoy it more. Breaking up the grinding makes it a whole lot more palatable, and to be able to do something else more enjoyable, means you'll enjoy the game far more.

Oh, and one more thing to make it more interesting... consider joining a wing too (check out the wings in Inara).

I'm starting to wonder if there wouldn't be benefits in a comment from Frontier about grinding when people buy the game. Show them Cmdr Fraud Digger's achievements, say specifically how this game isn't like others and there's no special skills to grind towards only things to learn etc

Though I suspect some players would never read it :/ at least it'd be easier than 100's of threads making the same points to people who've made the same mistakes

Hi guys. The thread achieved the goal and the mods on FD and probably the devs saw the post.So how do I close the thread?.

Anyways just one or 2 things I would like to say as a closing statement.

200 hours is a LONG time and some people point out it's something like 0.50 cents per hour. And that is true.I would be willing to pay 4 times that if it helps:).

I certainly had my fun with this game and I do not regret it.I will definitely be back eventually.

When I come back I will join a group and try to avoid the "grinding" habits that I have.

Great posts guys and I will definitely come back eventually. If not for the game then for the community. You guys are awesome.

This will be my last post.

Fly safe commanders and dont fly what you can't afford.
