Having worked in journalism and editing somewhat, I'm mildly obsessed with writing style and I have a comment to make about improving the journalistic style of Galnet. I have been wondering how best to bring it to the attention of developers and this is it.
If this is judged off topic that's fine, I'll take my lumps, but at the moment the Galnet writing style is not as tight as it might be, and often rings false for reasons that I'll hopefully explain.
This might also provide basic style pointers for players writing reports who are not accustomed to a journalistic style.
So, if you're still reading:
In general (though there are infamous exceptions
*cough*Fox News*cough*), fact and opinion are clearly separated in present day print, internet and broadcast journalism for news reporting. Opinion is often reported, preferably with a named on the record source but also from anonymous sources if it helps to explain what's happening, but critically(!!) the news journalist ideally never speculates on the meaning of events or imposes a narrative. Interpretation and narrative happen solely due to quoted sources and verifiable facts, in the mind of the reader. The personal opinions of a news journalist, when you think about it, should never feature in reporting major news events because they are largely irrelevant. Opinion and comment by journalists should clearly be flagged as such.
This prevents the news outlet from being sued for the narcissism of a single journalist, from looking stupid when speculation proves to be wrong, from adopting a political stance that may change from day to day, alienate readers who interpret events differently or call into question the impartiality of its reporting.
Galnet at present doesn't completely comply with these elementary rules, which is why it doesn't read quite like an analogue to a modern news organisation. It's a small change in style but it would improve the quality of Galnet and make it seem more realistic, since these requirements will hopefully still be in place in 3301. Even if the intention is satirical, this should be the base from which the satire is launched.
Got that off my chest now.
