Player numbers dropped?

Is anyone noticing a marked drop in players? Just noticed a convo in my player group's discord where the guy has tried a few groups and found people are quitting the game. My group is the same (I'm also on hiatus). I know we don't have official numbers but just wondered what others' anecdotal experience has been recently. I hope FDev haven't really misjudged this 2020 announcement.....

Obligatory games dead.

Obligatory hyperbole.

Obligatory steam stats.

Obligatory shilling.

Anything I missed?

Shinrarta was as busy as it ever was tonight. Was full of wanted commanders and we did some good hunting. If youre just going by what you hear...pro tip - dont, as its usually greatly exaggerated. I go by what i see and expereince with my own 2 eyes.

I'm being serious dude. My concern with that announcement was if the player numbers drop off a cliff they may just completely abandon the 2020 update. That would suck.

Distant Worlds 2 appears to be doing very well.

Unsurprising that there's a drop-off - 3.3 arrived exactly three months ago. Big updates with new features & gameplay = playerbase resurgence. What goes up must come down :)

Yeah and i get there will be peaks and troughs. But my entire player group has basically quit. I've never seen that happen between updates.

They will drop like they always do then return when updates are released.

They wont abandon development simply because some salty boys cant stand to wait until 2020 for further dlc content. I can predict now that 90% of the dummy spit club will be back in 2020 playing the content released.

Hard to say for certain.
- squadron activity in Season 2 was generally higher per-day than in Season 1 on most leaderboards, across all levels of squadron activity
- recorded jumps in the bubble are fairly stable (and DW2 departing can be blamed for a lot of the level being lower than before - there's a noticeable drop as they leave)
- Colonia traffic levels are about what they've always been for the last several months now DW2 has stopped visiting
- Distant Worlds CG2 seems to be running at about the same tonnes/day rate as CG1 a couple of months ago
- my friends list (mostly just a few hundred people I said hi to once, so the only thing they really have in common is I met them in Open somewhere) seems to be about as busy in online/offline as normal
It doesn't look massively quieter than any other time to me.

The chances of Frontier cancelling the 2020 update over short-term fluctuations is basically zero, anyway, so no need to worry there. They'll bring out another minor update in a few months, numbers will go up a bit, numbers will go back down a bit, repeat.

Cool. Cheers for that. It might just be a few groups then that have gone dark. Maybe explorers etc are still keeping busy.

Winter's moving into Spring in the Northern Hemisphere, so less reason to be stuck inside in front of a screen. Season to fix stuff around the house. So games have less of a share of people's time at this time of year (probably). Plus the excitement of 3.3 is now over.

And the clocks have already moved forward in the U.S.

Some people seem very sensitive about the drop in player numbers :D

I wonder how many people were gifted the game around christmas but stopped playing cause they find the game boring.

It's hardly surprising considering FD's recent announcement, I love ED but without any significant updates for another year it won't have enough in it to keep me playing until the next bit thing drops. I've played ED exclusively since 2014 and enjoyed it even though ED was not high on FD's development list and even bought a new gaming pc in anticipation of the goodies that I and many others thought would be coming this year. I needn't have bothered, but I am in need of an engaging space game that is just like ED whilst I wait for ED to be completed. I've also spent a fortune in ship skins and the odd kit but none appeal to me as I probably won't be playing until 2020 that is...

Taking a break too, at least until some of 3.3's bugs get patched.

Thankfully there's plenty of other games to play in the meantime.

Works out well for Elite that you can take a break for several months then pretty much jump right back in.

It was bound to descend some from the peaks over the holiday season. No big deal. Frontier have already announced the major milestone plans, at least the general timeline. Players can take a break if they want to. In fact the game's infrastructure has been designed to preserve players' assets even if they've been gone for months or years. As mentioned there will be the usual cyclics with the quarterly interim tideover updates , then everyone will be back for the 2020 game changer, guaranteed..
