While in the car today, my mind started to wander.

I had a thought. Could I possibly play Elite with my Wacom Bamboo tablet that I use to play with Inkscape & GIMP?

Be a little while before I can play the game, but I might test my theory. In the meantime, does anyone think it would be possible?

Just thought I'd give us a little fun thread today. :)

Even in 3301, touch isn't a viable method of fully interacting with your ship, only if you wanted to check your messages ;P

On a more serious note, I'm not sure you'd have enough buttons or assignments to interact with the different things needed on ED. You may be able to use it for simple movement, but not much else, if it even supports that.

I play on my Surface Pro 3, with a keyboard and mouse though. I also use a joystick too for anything non-basic.

Touch does stuff but I doubt you could get it to work.

I should clarify, my tablet isn't a tablet computer. It's a peripheral that acts like a mouse. Lets you "draw" on a PC with a pen-style input.

I've had ED running on a low spec ASUS Transformer t101TA - Just!
All settings have to be on low and you have to run the game in a window (or really low res screen mode).
I got about 5fps though so its not really playable.

I'm always curious about different input devices, but I think it would need alot of work to use that tablet for Elite. The only way I can think of that you can make it work is to program gestures yourself and map them to specific hotkeys. Actual steering with this device will be rather difficult I guess and result in more or less clumsy movement.

Probably not much help, but if you were on the Mac side... there's BetterTouchTool which has experimental support that'd let you assign commands/keystrokes, or you could use something OSCulator and TouchOSC. I guess if you were to take the same approach on the Windows side you'd want to look for something that can turn the Wacom input into MIDI or OSC, and then something to turn that into keystrokes. Or if the Bamboo has a touch interface, assign keys that way?

Could you describe in more detail how you imagine it working?

Edit: actually, TouchOSC Bridge works on Windows too...

If its a windows device, able to go online then yes, you would be able to play, how well I couldn't say, I'd guess towards 'not very' though you could maybe use it to stream your pc to the tablet remotely that might work, but again performance is going to be an issue.

No reason why not, as long as it can emulate a mouse. That's usually how these things work, as far as I know.

It would be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

I'll let you guys know, if I try it! (Might not because of the controls needing remapping; I use an X52) OfftheRails, that's what I was thinking.

as far as I know, the computer does recognise the tablet as a mouse; indeed, I'm using it to move my cursor on this very webpage. So by that logic, I do think the tablet would work. How comfortable it is though, I don't know.
