Playing Elite with Google Cardboard

Interesting part: when the app was installing, it did not request access to Gyro sensor... not sure if Android apps usually do

The sensor permission lackage in apk metadata is likely the cause why says 'can't open sensor' upon startup here.

4.1.2 JZO54K rooted.

Is there a way to specifically grant sensor permission to an already installed app? Sorry, wife's phone, not familiar with Android OS myself

Having USB 3.0 ports on your PC won't make a difference since no current android phone is USB 3.0 compatible so the phone will still bottleneck the speeds.

I have a pretty meaty PC, very powerful CPU and a nicely humming (and glowing) GTX Titan, so will give this a try tonight or tomorrow, although I only have a Samsung S3 which Sammy pretty much killed with a really poor touchwiz version of Android 4.2, so I'll probably be bottlenecked by poor phone performance.

Sorry to be THAT GUY but the Samsung Note 3 supports USB3 - just in case someone needs it.

I think I'd better try this!

Wifi connection - Working but very unstable.
USB Tethering(USB 2.0) - Working but still stuttering.

I have USB 3.0 cable for the Note 3 but its not long enough to test. Bummer.

Good to hear, because that's what I have and placed an order yesterday for a cardboard kit to fit it :)

it's a beast of a phone, I love mine!
I put it in one of these These after the first one didn't survive a roof surfing accident on my car :( (I got a black one though).

I've ordered a set of ColorCross NEJE LJ-01 VR Glasses a few days ago for £23 delivered, so I'll let you know how they are once they arrive.

Made of plastic, can fit a phone up to 6" ( their descriptions claim 7" but people who own one say no chance ) & allows you to adjust the lens spacing & distance.

Although I did just read that some people feel that the phone is 1/2 inch too far away from the lenses once installed, so I'll see how that goes. Can't complain at £23 really.

There's also the Davyci & a NEJE LJ-02, but I haven't read of any people using either one so far.

While we are at it... look at this.

Apparently that Leap Motion device is able to project your hands into any desirable mix of video-to-VR overlay.

I can feel the future.

Interesting to see the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 mentioned; today I read this while researching the imminent Note 4.

Given it's being created in conjunction with Oculus, is wireless and has a 2560 x 1440 screen resolution, I could get really interested (once my Note 1 gives up the ghost ;))

No indication of price yet, unfortunately...

OK, got my Cardboard configured and set up as per the instructions (thanks, Retrograde) and it works!

Sorta... The frame rate is a bit choppy and there is some definite lag, though there are several places where I know i can improve, mainly in graphics quality and using a USB cable to stream or trying direct WIFI. I'm also having trouble keeping my Carboard oriented. It seems to drift a bit but that may just be a mapping problem.

For now, it's pretty unplayable and is just a neat experiment, but I am going to try and tweak it some more to see how it works. My hardware is a few years old across the board, probably not even considered mid-range anymore so there's room for improvement there. I'm running an i5 750 w/4 GB of RAM and a Radeon 5800 with 1 GB of GDDR5, and my phone is an HTC One X+ from 2012. Definitely not top of the line, but I offer it up as a baseline to compare. With the stuttering I'm seeing, though, it looks like I might see some big improvement if I switch to USB. We'll see how that goes.

My cardboard is ordered ... what a nice idea, I love the magnet-button.

Thinking about this design I was wondering if I could simply use two pizza-cardboards to transform my dual-screen setup into a VR-solution. OK ... headtracking could be a bit exhausting

You not needed to use opentrack if you use trinus.
In Trinus you select 'Freetrack' and run ED.

Trinus has gyro support itself and it works better at this moment.
While using opentrack via udp you can have some axis rotation malfunction.

If Elite do not recognize trinus and do not enter headlook mode you can turn off opentrack, start for a while on oculus and stop.

So far I'm having problems setting up.

If I use the USB cable, I need to enable tethering. Fine - the Trinus Gyre server and client hook up.

BUT if I enable Flight Mode, I can't start ED because my laptop won't connect to the internet. I've re-ordered my network bindings to put my ethernet connection to the top of the list, but I still can't browse the net or start ED once tethered with the phone with Flight Mode enabled. The laptop seems to prefer connecting to the internet via the phone to ethernet :(

I've tried connecting ED then the phone, but unlike IRC, ED drops connection once the phone connects.

I really don't want to connect to the internet via my phone to play ED!
