Playing game via Oculus Home *but not in VR*

Hey there - I'm new both to the forums and to Elite Dangerous. If my question has been answered before (I haven't found anything on a quick search, but that may be due to lack of caffeine and holidays), please be gentle. :)

I've installed ED via Oculus Home, but especially to set up the controls (and possibly Voice Control) and get used to them I'd prefer to play some in non-VR. I've found the launcher in the Oculus software folder, which gave me a warning but otherwise worked well. However, what I'm a bit worried about is having to change my settings every time I switch between non-VR playing and Oculus Rift. Is this the case, or does the game choose the right settings (especially resolution) if I launch it via Oculus Home?

Wow, there's a question!

I would assume Oculus Home's version is just a wrapper- when I tried with the Oculus Home version it certainly installed a separate version to my non-Oculus Home version, but it shared the settings that are stored in my user profile.

I haven't tried, but I suspect, that this means any options you have set will apply whatever version you launch. I uninstalled the Oculus Home version myself because I didn't see the point of having two copies installed, but the Oculus Home version did not set any extra options that I hadn't already made when it was launched there.

I would therefore assume that if you wanted to have a VR and non-VR screen setup this would require manually switching the XML files that store this information by exiting the game and overwriting them with a backup of both types of settings.

Off the top of my head, I can't remember the exact location as I'm not on my own PC that has the game.

It may well be "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments" but after that I cannot recall. Hopefully someone else can fill you in on the details. I know one of the subfolders does contain the XML that stores the graphics information.

Whichever way you look at it, switching anyway does sound a convoluted process. However, I started out learning my way in VR and it does become easier over time. What helped me was having a flight control X52 joystick and throttle which over time meant my finger memory could so a lot of the work of option selecting.

Only typing in Galaxy Map is a pain for me and usually requires me to look under the Rift (which is easier than Vive to do). Hopefully FD will add a virtual keyboard at some point, although Voice Attack can be utilised if you are prepared to phonetically do so!

Cool, thanks. I think I'll set the basic commands for the HOTAS (and possibly Voice Attack) outside VR but will then switch to Oculus Rift. I haven't changed any of the options other than the resolution; what's the best resolution once I'm back in the Rift?
