Playing Skyrim...

Every so often, I get the overwhelming urge to play Skyrim.

At some point, I finally give in.
Unfortunately, this means I spend a good few hours downloading, sorting, and configuring mods (I don't delete Skyrim or its mods from my PC, but for some reason updating mods can break the whole thing so it's easier to just start again).
Once I've done that, i fire up a new character.
Sit through the unskippable intro,
Build my character,
And before I've even made it out of the keep, I'm an god damn ninja archer mage, again.

No matter what I do, I always seem to come back to those skills.
Even with mods to tone down the bows effect, and make sneaking harder.
I always end up choosing stealth and bows, backed up by swords and magic.

So by the time I reach the first village, I'm already getting bored. Lol
I've only ever finished the main story once, and probably haven't scratched the surface with side quests, but I just get bored.
Then a few months later, urge to play Skyrim is rising!

Anyone else do this?

Roll on TES VI!

I grabbed Skyrim on PS4 after playing it to death on PS3. My previous playthrough years ago was a ninja archer conjurer augmented with 100 enchanting and smithing (thus killer weapons and armor), and that was too OP. This time I'm purposefully sticking to sword and shield with lighting & healing magic as my secondary - I loosely based my character on Wonder Woman, LOL. I've not used any "exploits" for leveling (like crafting 100 dwarven bows), except allowing hits to get through to help level up the ever so slow light armor skill.

The game this time is much more difficult, at least the bosses. Sometimes I have to resort to using my crossbow and some long-range magic to whittle down boss HP. I'm much more 'mortal' this time around, but I like the challenge it brings.

I'm still early game with this character, having put Skyrim aside to play Subnautica and Red Dead Redemption 2. It may be a long while before I get back to it...

Purchased a copy of skyrim legendary last week to upgrade my original copy.
Spent time adding some 30 plus " Lots of quest and new map" mods and dove in to play everything the game had to give.
It's been a long time since I played it and the game still rocks.
I need more mods already. :)

Yeah I love the game, but...

Get mods that'll make it difficult. Needing to eat, sleep, drink, etc.
  1. Play as a mage only.
  2. Light armor, if any at all.
  3. Put all your points in magic.
Now, work with THAT only. See how difficult it is just to make it to Whiterun on the first try.

Yup, that was my last playthough. Mage, no non-spell armor allowed, weapons only if I could conjure them.
Follower def required.

I only ever make it to the sleeping Bear before I inevitably pick up that conveniently placed bow... 🙄

Yes, I know you can sneak past, but in Skyrim, I kill everything.

I'd allow light armour you pick up, but no make nor buy. Still end up with points in illusion and destruction... And end up later with a bazillion points in conjuring and bound bow... It never ends.

Well I needed those conjuring skill to get the dremora lord, as I played as a puppetmaster, not a direct fighter (dragons, other hard to kill enemies).
Harder difficulty level settings make all the difference, too.
Love the illusion tree too.
Make the humans lose their minds, and kill each other.

For modding I suggest: getting Mod organizer 2. Nexus mod organizer is frankly trash. It also integrates the some following programs.
Wrye bash
Loot
Bodyslide
Save Cleaner

It also does't touch your actual skyrim data folder and insteads virtually loads the mods from a different location. Making it much more safe and stable to update, remove and install mods without breaking your game.

If you are updating mods manually, ensure to 100% remove the old mods files. Do NOT! just drag and drop and overwrite.

Also try and fix any dirty edits made by the mod author and use Save Game Cleaner to delete any loose/old scripts still running if you not starting a new game.

BTW, there is ONE mod I'd recommend no matter what kind of character you play.
"Stronger Arrows LITE" - no one should be attacking you with an arrow sticking through their head (might not be available through Steam workshop as of now, not sure).

"Breezehome workshop extended" is also quite helpful as it provides a way for you to actually store your "stuff" in a much more organized fashion, including several bookshelves (also, might no longer be available via the Steam workshop as of now).

In any event, either hold this for when you finally defeat Alduin or just play it constantly in the background for inspiration:

I use faster arrows mod.

Makes attacking more fun, and dodging more difficult.

But yeah, sometimes people do have arrows stuck out of their heads. 😁

Been listening to the Skyrim soundtrack on Apple Music, and it's making me want to play it more. Lol

I suffer with this as well... I always try to do something different, but I end up playing an Imperial Legionnaire with a set of Imperial Armour that I've pushed up to the Armour Cap with 96% resistance to Fire, Shock and Frost magic, 80% resistance to Poison and Disease as well as water breathing, while clutching a bog-standard Imperial Sword that's able to one-hit an end-level dragon.

The thing I spent the most time trying to fix with mods is melee combat, there are many of them, good ones such as Wildcat and Smilodon (same author). In the end I just gave up and now I use a custom difficulty mod. The levels of difficulty is not handled well in Skyrim, it's too uneven, one minute you're one-shotting a bandit only to be instagibbed by another seconds later.

Pretty much. Illusion/xbow/dagger. Almost Everytime. I did try a 2 hander but only got him past the werewolf storyline then lost interest and went back to the rogue.

From Morrowind to Fallout 4, I've never actually finished the main story of a Bethesda game until this weekend with Skyrim.
Part of the problem is they're so open world there's many 'Squirrel!' moments that distract and off I go. Eventually running out of steam and getting bored of the whole thing.
Another part, particularly with Skyrim, is the way enemies level up so hard. They quickly become death dealing tanks, while my character is trying to poke them with a fork. It seems to enforce the stealth bow play as the only way to do damage without getting squashed, and hide and seek while throwing toothpicks gets tedious.

I tried something different this time. Never bothered with alchemy and enchanting much before so focused on building those skills, along with smithing up as a sideline while I ran the Thief and Mage's quests. Can't cheese the restoration potion glitch because of the unofficial patch, but what I have achieved with mega smithed enchanted gear was pretty insane.
A Nordic greatsword that could do over 400 base damage while having and additional 61 each of fire and shock on it. Armour rating of about 700 as well as having no cost to destruction magic allowing the sword to never need recharging, along with ranged lightning bolt spamming (Unlimited power!); and then some reduction to restoration and 50% fire protection.
It actually makes the game fun. Now I don't have to run for the hills when a troll approaches in the hope I can shout it down the slope, it just gets smacked flat in one hit. A room full of Deathlord Draugrs is like 'come get some'. Alduin took about half a dozen hits to take down.

Now I'm going after Miraak, and I've just found a Black Book that allows for boosting alchemy and enchanting slightly further if I work it right.
The storytelling and characters in Dragonborn seem to be a bit better than the base game.
