Playing without joystick?

I played initially with keyboard and mouse, then moved to a game pad, finally with my X55 HOTAS....will never go back to anything else.

Given that proper flying requires liberal use of vertical thrusters and strafing, I'm finding the mouse+keyboard combination preferable.

I bind space to thrust up, ctrl to thrust down, q and e to strafe left and right, a and d to *yaw* left and right... and I have the full selection. Feels a lot like flying in Planetside 2, in fact (you can belly-rub asteroids and stuff when you're trying to shake someone, by aiming at the rock while thrusting away from it vertically).

That being said, the game really needs (and people did request this ages ago) an option to toggle absolute/relative mouse mode when switching between FA on and off.

WASD is lateral and vertical thrusters, Q&E for roll, mouse for pitch and yaw. left shift and control for thrusters. Works great.

I used mouse and keyboard in beta and it worked fine.
I did have a problem initially with the mouse being bound to pitch and roll, I switched the roll for yaw and it worked great.
I actually found general flying and docking easier but for combat a joystick does have an edge, not a huge one but it is better

Yes, I play keyboard only, using the mouse as well when docked for station services menus. I fight a bit/enough, but don't understand fully the comment from another reply that they use thrusters when fighting. I use the three dimensions movement - pitch, roll and yaw, and that's sufficient for me when bounty hunting. I have thruster bound to my side number keypad (six directions, up, down, left, right, forward, backward) which I use for docking final approaches to fine-tune landing, so I suppose I could use those too while generally flying/fighting but it feels like a distraction and would take my right hand away from rolls.

Directional key bindings are:

LEFT HAND
S Pitch Up
X Pitch Down
Alt Yaw Left
A Main Fire

RIGHT HAND
< Roll Left
> Roll Right
Alt Gr Yaw Right
/ Secondary Fire

Space bar to accelerate
Shift to decelerate

The only issue left for me is forward and backward thrusters. It's pretty difficult using those when you have up and down thrusters at W+S. What's really needed is a much better use of forward and back on the mouse scroll wheel - the current implementation is pretty awful like that.

0 throttle button (default X) makes it not a problem.

I've been using mouse and k/b over the last week or so and found it alright but not brilliant. I suppose I just need more practice with multiple key binds until I get my voice attack working properly.

i play with mouse and keyboard, i'm ok with it actually, i'll try remember what i have.

W = throttle up

S = Throttle down

D = barrel roll right

A = barrel roll left

R = Strafe upwards

F = Strafe downwards

T = Add energy pips to weapons

G = Reset energy pips

V = release heat sink

B = Chaff

left mouse button = shoot

right mouse button = shoot

middle mouse button = toggle looking around camera

Mouse button 5 = silent running

mouse buitton 4 = toggle flight correction

1 = target thing in front of view

2 = cycle through targets

3 = cycle through hostiles

4 = target highest threat

5 = frameshift jump to next system

6 = frameshift jump to supercruise

7 = system jump from supercruise to next system.

L - lights for morse code (since comms is still busted)

0 = for comms

and thats all i can remember, my best kill is an Asp, so it is possible to do, even if a few of my fingers are now broken.
