So ... this got 10/10 from just about every game reviewer?

Well, that just shows me game reviewers know sweet F A about games.

"Ah but it's only the best game ever !!!!11!!!1!!!!!"

It's a first person shooter, or FPS for short, and all and I do mean ALL FPS games are rubbish. You wander around and basically just kill everything. No need to think or work things out or be clever. The only FPS I have ever liked was Tomb Raider, and they had to dumb down Tomb Raider IV for the Americans.

"Ah but in this one you can craft stuffs" So what? I've played lots of games you can do that. I've played turn based strategy games where you can take a bit combine it with another bit and another bit and WOW you have a new vehicle. Crafting is not a new thing.

"Ah but this one has such awesome graphics and sound" Yeah yeah yeah graphics and sound improve as technology improves.

"Ah but you can do what ever you want in this one, go wherever you want" You could that in Elite, or Elite II or the Sims.

"Ah but it's the gameplay, it's so well done" They say that about every single game that ever gets made.

There is no way this ever deserves 10/10

How much we're they paid to say that? :p

Interesting however, I will get the beers in and get my friend to bring it over for a weekend ;)

Shall we have the exact same discussion when Elite is released.

So ELITE 4 got 10/10 from just about every game reviewer?

Well, that just shows me game reviewers know sweet F A about games.

It's a space game, or space game for short, and all and I do mean ALL space games are rubbish. You wander around and basically just kill everything. No need to think or work things out or be clever. The only space I have ever liked was Star Citizen, and they had to dumb down Star Citizen for the British.

The irony... Let's see:

It's a first person shooter

It's a third person shooter.

and all and I do mean ALL FPS games are rubbish. You wander around and basically just kill everything.

All driving games are rubbish. You just drive around.

All platformers are rubbish. You just jump on things.

All rhythm games are rubbish. You just press buttons in time with music.

What you mean is, "I don't like third-person shooters (to the extent that I can't tell them apart from first-person shooters)".

No need to think or work things out or be clever.

Because there's no such thing as taking cover from fire, finding advantageous aiming points, ammo conservation, object-based puzzles, and so on.

I don't need to think when I play a fighting game. I just mash buttons. That doesn't mean there isn't a complex moveset with blocking/holding, combos, specials etc., it just means I happen to be mashing buttons.

Most of these games will let you think your way through if you choose to.

Crafting is not a new thing.

And therefore every game that has crafting in must suck.

"Ah but you can do what ever you want in this one, go wherever you want" You could that in Elite, or Elite II or the Sims.

Those must suck too. Or is it purely originality that makes a game fun? Bit of a waste making Elite Dangerous, then.

Have you even played the game? I haven't (no PS3), so will reserve any real judgement on it. From what I've seen of it, I wouldn't give it 10/10 either, but not based on misconceptions about a genre clearly not properly understood, or mass generalisations.

Yes, but also tell us what you think of this game once you have played it! :)

oh! ill give it a thorough play through, I find it funny that some people have the ignorance to slate something before they have even played it. everyone and their dog is saying its a great game but some like to form a opinion before they know the facts.

I'm not going to quote above comments, so I'll just sum up my responses:

OK Granted it's a 3rd person shooter, not a 1st person shooter .... but you still go around killing everything, only difference is you see your "character" on the screen

To those who have ripped apart my post ... OK, fair comment I don't mind, but don't put words in my mouth, insinuating I mean something else by association.

No, I haven't played the game, it's a mindless walk around shooter ... I'm not interested and I don't care if you have to think about dodging fire blah blah blah ... it's still a mindless walk around shoot everything game.

Yes fighting games like WWE are also mindless mash the button games

Yes Elite Dangerous can be criticised exactly the same way I did in my post above. The difference? I want play a game like Elite Dangerous, but a game like The Last Of Us does not interest me at all.

Sorry, but for me The Sims did suck. Really couldn't give a **** about the needy little blighters after a while so gave up with it.

Don't mind a bit of FPS myself, I play the Resident Evil games and convince myself that the remarkably easy puzzles make them more highbrow. ;)

It's only mindless if you want to play it that way. You'll be better at the game (and will possibly enjoy it more) if you do think about what you're actually doing.

In which case, you're saying, "Doesn't interest me."

That's not the same as, "NO WAY THESE GUYS DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT THEY'RE WRONG".

There's a subtle difference between the two.

Hey, if you like FPS (or 3rd person shooters) then great, I hope you enjoy it.

Even if reviewers don't know what they are talking about. it would appear that they all think its a good game. Metacritic gives it a 95 based on 53 reviews.

26 give 100
1 gives it 98
4 give it 97
9 give it 95
9 give it 90
1 give it 85
2 give 80
and 1 gives it 75

I would have to think that as the majority of the reviewers give it a high score, I would think that its a game that wont disappoint.

As someone said above, how much were they paid to give it high marks?
I could not care if they ALL give it 1000/1000 and give Elite Dangerous 0/1000 ... I will still play the game / watch the film / read the book / eat the meal / do whatever ... that I want to do, and I care not if I am literally the only that likes whatever it may be.

In which case, you're saying, "Doesn't interest me."

That's not the same as, "NO WAY THESE GUYS DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT THEY'RE WRONG".

There's a subtle difference between the two.

There's a film reviewer who does an item on the BBC News channel once a week. I've seen him review films I liked, yet he hated or films I hated he liked. His job is to sell the film to me so I go to the cinema and pay money to watch it.

I have yet to agree with any opinion on a film I have heard him give. Is he wrong? no it's his opinion, but as far as doing his job, he's wrong.

Now, when a magazine / website review a game, their job is to make me want to go a shop and pay money for the game. It doesn't matter if every game reviewer says the same thing (actually, that's when it becomes suspicious) if they can't convince to go out and buy the game, they have failed in what they are there for.

Hey, if you like FPS (or 3rd person shooters) then great, I hope you enjoy it.

well going by Naughty Dogs previous games that I thoroughly enjoyed, Jack and Daxter, Uncharted 1,2 and 3. im expecting another entertaining game.

Elite on the other hand is a game I backed, so even if it gets ****e reviews its a game ive invested in and will play. I done the same for carrier command remake and that didn't get great reviews, metacritic only gave it 60% but I still enjoyed it. then as you said earlier

"Well, that just shows me game reviewers know sweet F A about games."

Feel free to put "Well, that just shows me game reviewers know sweet F A about games." in your sig as stupidest statement ever. Use the quote button on my first post in this thread. :D

No, their job is to give an informed opinion on the game. Nothing more.
No, the way the industry works, they are there to make you buy whatever it is. Same with fashion magazines.

People don't go on talk shows to just talk. They always have a book to sell, or album to sell. Or charity to beg you to give money to.

I guess its all down to personal preference....If you hate FPS games no review in the world will change your mind...You just wont like it full stop

If of course its reviewed properly with an open mind it will get high scores if it really does merit it...But surely no game is perfect ?

You know what I mean....Graphics 10/10...Playability 9/10....sound 9/10...control 8/10 etc...

Still very worthy scores ...but someone's bound to find something in reviews that are not perfect

People don't go on talk shows to just talk. They always have a book to sell, or album to sell. Or charity to beg you to give money to.

And those people attempt to sell you their books, their albums, or their charities. Meanwhile, the role of the talk show host (and the producers etc.) is to make sure that as many people watch the talk show as possible.

It's not the job of the talk show host to get people to the books, albums, or donate to the charities of their guests.

So...

No, the way the industry works, they are there to make you buy whatever it is. Same with fashion magazines.

No, the way the industry works, they are there to make you buy the magazine. It's the job of the publishers of the game to get you to buy the game. It's not the job of the reviewers to get you to buy the game.

Same with fashion magazines. The writers of the fashion magazines are writing for the magazine, not for the products featured in the magazine. The publishers of the magazine want as many people to buy the magazine as possible, and couldn't give a toss how much mascara you buy as a result of reading the magazine.

The publishers of the magazine want as many people to buy the magazine as possible, and couldn't give a toss how much mascara you buy as a result of reading the magazine.

Most of the fashion magazine's money comes from advertising products like mascara. The amount of money they get from advertisers comes down to how many readers they've got, and how that converts into mascara sales. So it's in the magazine publisher's interest to basically promote mascara sales for their advertisers, while trying not to lose readership.

Similarly, it probably doesn't hurt a game publication's bottom-line to oversell the big titles. Even if a reviewer's honest opinion of something like the new Call of Duty was that it's unoriginal, uninspired, and derivative of its own franchise, that's not necessarily what they're going to publish. This article highlights the case pretty well. Also, you can be paid for positive reviews, it seems. I know, it's shocking!

Not saying that's the case with the Last of Us, mind you. Gamespot only gave it 8/10 so praise isn't universal. Their review ties in with how a lot of 10/10 type games seem to be nowadays - good story, good visuals and locations, but not very good AI.
