Please Dont Laugh ( Too Much)

:D
It's a thing of beauty alright.

It's because of that I have written all the voice attack commands on card because the first time I almost completely forgot every single one. Is it "Supercruise"? ...Nope!

Is it "Warp"? .....Nope!

Is it "Hyperdrive"? ...Nope!

Is it "Rosemary the telephone operator"? ...could be!...

No - Its Hong Kong Phoey - Panriffic!

Having your controls written down is actually quite sensible while learning.

I felt like an actual pilot with several flight control diagrams scribbled on mini notepad pages and taped to my monitor. Even though I've long since committed them to memory, I've left the little diagrams there for fun!

Welcome to Elite and see you in Spaaaaaaace!

I have bits of paper all over the place trying to remember whet does what

When i invested in a £40 HOTAS stick, suddenly it all became clear....instinctive. I struggled with the XBOX controller for weeks, and never got to grips with it really (even though I've been using it on the 360 for years). Hotas though - almost immediately I'm using lateral/vertical thrusters without any brain-confusion.

If you can afford to blow 40 quid on a Hotas stick, it makes everything much easier.

Thankyou fellow Pilots (commanders is too hard to spell )

I will try and reply in order but forgive me if get it wrong or miss someone out .

Borrowed laptop from son due to my laptop not upto spec(graphic/render issues) for pre beta 2 now he is home i am updating to 2.04 on my laptop to see if fixes work :)

Hong Kong Phoey is probably the truth even with notes :D

Logical/Sensible to have notes yes and no, i cannot get my old C64 keyboard overlay to fit so i tried to do a Bodge it and Scarper fix. Not 100% fixed but if i can understand them later i can transfer to new rig if i get permission ( read down lol)

As for Budget the good lady (SWMBO) needs to be convinced but being 1 week into a 2 week redecorating project ( managed to put off for prev 5 yrs  ) i may have some wriggle room lol

Going to persist with X Box 360 controller if i can get help from son to fine tune it, its the deadzone that gets me need it to be more progressive not all or nothing.

Tutorials are great but as normal i skipped a few then had to go back

The Devs etc are doing a great job but this Forum is one of the best i have visited, yes the odd rant is going to be about but 99% are dedicated to improving/testing the game and give their support to everyone regardless of experience testing the game.

Hats off to everyone involved.

The views going sideways into a space station are awesome, wonder what they look like dead ahead :D

See, I hated the deadzones, I wound up dropping them to zero, I feel I have finer control when I don't have to move the stick a CM before it does anything. Then again Im using a weird roll/yaw setup. I set it up as "yaw on low roll" so the first half of the travel is ya, then it goes to roll. solves that annoying crap where it yaws a few degrees, then goes into a roll. Takes some getting used to, but you have much better control. Not ideal, but ideal is why HOTAS's exist.

Spent weeks wrestling with the controls and all the other stuff you have to learn from the clues scattered around the forum. Finally sort of got the hang of movement and docking and completed about half a dozen trades. Got to 5000 credits then beta 2 came along ... And it got wiped!

Started again today and messed up on the landing pad. Oh well...

Welcome commander!

welcome in!

I started with the mouse and keyboard options took me about 3 hours to stop freaking out during dockings (no fatalities, not sure how).

then got a mate to lend me his dual shock playstation type controller. with pretty much the same results due to the dead zone problem and my lack of expertise with the controller software.

finally took the plunge and went for an X52 (not the pro) and have to say flying has become a constant joy for me (do make sure to check out the joystick thread on the elite forum, much help gleaned from there).

i would definitely recomend a hotas set up as a long term solution (managed to dock last night whilst helping my wife with a difficult SWTOR mission at the same time!!), no way i could do that with any other control system lol.

whatever method you end up using long term though, have fun and welcome to Elite may you have many hours happy flying! :D

I struggled with the gamepad first, but using my joystick didn't make it better either.

So I ended up making my own profiler, first to apply certain functions to the gamepad sticks, which made gameplay much more enjoyable. The fine adjustments necessary during docking or the occasional flight with assist off is not a problem anymore.

I wonder though if there are others like me who find playing with the gamepad more enjoyable than with the joystick. I fear if I had a HOTAS it would be used only during dogfight. I would likely use the gamepad most of the time, so the HOTAS would end up being a dust collector like my joystick does.

Not the only one with memory issues. My joystick and throttle are so covered in stick on Dymo-Labels they look like something out of Memento! :D

No laughing here! I spent about 2 hours honing my controls and testing them in tutorial 2 before I was happy with them, then the next 3 hours or so completing most of the remaining tutorials, one of which I gave up on after a couple runs. By then I felt I'd learned enough to jump in and I've been enjoying real missions since.

This is not an easy game to jump in and start playing quickly. I like that. Though it may put off some players, it'll certainly reduce the number of people who don't have a good attention span - which may be a good thing.

Keep at it. It becomes exponentially easier with practice - it just takes time for muscle memory to kick in and before you know it, the ship will do what you want when you want it.

absolutely brilliant!!! been there and done that... then i discovered lateral thrusters and all became clear. now i dock like a pensioner in tesco!

Ok been 6 weeks i think since i bought into Beta 1 testing and now i have finally managed to borrow my sons laptop long enough to play ED .

I have just spent 20 minutes and i finally managed to figure out how to configure the controls on an X Box 360 controller to how i like it and i have just completed the first tutorial :D

I have bits of paper all over the place trying to remember whet does what

ok onto tutorial number 2

Everyone has their own speed, don't worry you'll be whizzing around like the best of them... :D

I was playing with my old Logitech joystick at first, been sitting on the shelf for years. My flying was all over the place, combat was hopeless. Then I bought a Thrustmaster HOTAS and realised the bearings in the old stick were really shot to hell. Now docking is second nature and I even have 50+ kills to my name, although I'm still not the greatest combat pilot. I've typed my control setup into a spreadsheet in case it gets wiped. Setting up the stick and buttons and trying and changing it until I found something I was happy with was really fun!

A decent controller is important, but you don't have to spend a fortune, whatever feels right is good.

Writing down keyboard shortcuts? Naaa... I have a mechanical keyboard so I just puck off the keys that are not bound, minimizes confusion about which keys are "hot" :D j/k

Congratulations on your success at the tutorial! It'll get more natural while you progress.

I bought into the beta, played the game - just once, for about 3.5 hours.

My mate bought into the beta, (because of my ravings),
he then bought a new rig and some HOTAS, *because* of ED.

He invited me over, to see his Anacando and a belly full of gold.

Now the hota's turned up that day, and he'd been playing 3/4 weeks straight on his playstation/xbox controller, so he gave the honour of breaking in the HOTAS.

It is a ridiculous amount to take in in one sitting.

He unloaded his cargo, and I practiced flying, picked it up, selling it at the near-by stations. And kept him safe. As I learned the ropes of how to fly.
(old skills from decades ago were enough, but getting those little nuances)

and basically he paved the way for me to get a hauler, and finally finish on a cobra.
Very nice man indeed, and I did some fly-bys so he could get a good look at his gorgeous ananconda. :)

I don't think I ever made a successfully clean landing, ever.

So much too take in :)

So it's been months, since my cobra was docked. I miss it. I only saw it for about 20 minutes.
