PLEASE eliminate white noise/static when engines are running! :(

I use a HS too. No static sounds here for me.

off-topic : i really love the sounds, not the music, only the sfx of all the ships. You can hear what ships are coming at your six .

Well hey, guess what, so have I. I don't hear any static.. You guy's should log a ticket, this issue definitely does not affect all systems

No need to. It's in the sound file.

Given the meticulous rendering of audio in this game, I seriously doubt that this issue is with the audio files or game itself. You may not like to hear "I don't have the problem so it doesn't exist" but it's most likely true in this case. Unless you've tested this on a clean windows machine with no additional audio software, codecs, drivers for audio gear etc. you can't blame it on the game when hardly anyone has the issue. I'm guessing since you stress audio quality so much that you've got something (uber audio enhancers, audio interface drivers etc.) installed on both machines you tested on that is causing the problem.

Pretty uber yes:

Not bragging just showing that I have a upscale setup and no my way around computer sound. I use and external DAC so no driver issues and it's not dirty USB because I use Wyrd decrapifier. I also have a handfuls of games I play regularly and 1000s of music files and every other type of computer sound ie Pandora, Spotify, movies on Netflix everything else I do with my computer and no sound issues... I don't think it's a problem with the game. It's just a wonky sound recorded in the file.

first things first: happens only with ELITE?
what khz settings do you have on your soundcard/windows ?
are your drivers up to date?
check your cables. TWICE
try unplugging one cable at a time and see if it's a hardware issue.

i don't want to be that guy but...is that a tube pre amp for real? i mean...never tried it but for what i know nowadays tubes are used for distortion and not for clarity...or is that device some kind of particular?
also, 9 out of 10 is that DAC that causes issuess with resampling. double check without it.

It can be quite spooky when you are playing in a dark room, at night... all alone...................... and then the cat jumps on your knee. But the sidewinder? Nope, no static.

Glad its not just me that finds the Hauler somewhat creepy, like flying a haunted house.

Yeah it only happens with elite for me, and I have logged a ticket with support.

It very well could be in the audio file. And if so - given the few that have noted the issue - it only manifests under certain conditions. I would suggest you and the OP compare notes on equipment used in your audio setups to see if there is any commonality. It seems to me that people with less sophisticated setups don't hear it.

it happens on an interval too, like as if every time the audio file is repeating or something, it causes the distortion/crackling,w/e

I don't think so. I have all different kinds of files in different kind of sample rates. Redbook to DSD 128. The tube do add a touch of distortion. They can be warm, cold, neutral, but they don't cause static or crackling and this amp measured very linear. Do some research on the HD800. They are very revealing. If there is a problem in the file they will show it. Look here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/650510/the-new-hd800-impressions-thread . I imagine the op has revealing speakers in his 7.1 setup and may be why he is hearing too.

Have you tried a latency tool - I picked up something called DPC Latency Checker (sry no link, I'm blocked from adding them because of being a noob with too few posts on here at the moment). I would recommend running that and doing as it says if Elite is pushing your latency up too high - go through media and other non-essential devices in hardware manager, disabling each one then re-checking latency with Elite focused (ie have Elite in windowed mode at a resolution that allows you to switch back to it while still seeing the dpc tool).

I've been playing on a somewhat old very underspec laptop and so expected little playability, but have been surprised with performance (still faster than Elite 1 was in the 80s ;)).

I have been getting a lot of this choppy/crackling sound issue that some others seem to have mentioned (in between the uber useful 'its not happening' posts [flame]). Oten a restart of the game every hour or so (something seems to be leaking!) or a reboot sorts it for a while.

Oddly what seemed to push my lappy below the threashold of the huge jump in latency that I'm seeing with Elite was to disable a bluetooth driver (Why that?, idk?) - disabled my 'Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI)' device.

It is more likely to do with the sound setup in game engine or a sound codec problem.
When searching, I did see something about installing the CCCP coeec pack fixing problems for someone (I loose track of the post now).

This very much remids me of a problem which once plagued the game X3 - Here what was happening is that for some people DirectX was piping mpeg plaback through an unpredicted pipeline - instead of using the pure DirectX HAL decoders, it would pipe through another 3rd party non HAL codec and cause a similar effect. The game relied on the extensive use of mpeg1 video clip pop-ups for all sorts of things. It is however pure speculation that a similar pipeline selection issue is going on in Elite, especially since I know nothing of the audio pipeline in the game.

Yeah I've run latency tool while playing but it stays in the green.

Try settings in sound properties

44100 Hz...

Tried that, but it doesn't affect it.

I'm sorry but tbh I'm not exactly sure I understood much of what you were saying...I think it's safe to say you know more about audio set ups than me at least lol

this... Go get your ears and headset checked.

Now ... How do I stop my wife's noise while my engines are running?

Wow what an aggravating and completely useless way to respond. You must be an IT genius...

It's most definitely not a matter of getting my ears checked. I'm not the only one, as others in this thread have confirmed getting it and you can do a very simple google search for "elite dangerous sound crackling" and come up with different videos...

for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qv3BLcPKwaA

No neet to what? Log a ticket? Well, if you consider it a problem, logging a ticket is exactly what you should do.

As for it being "in the sound file", you know because you have identified the particular sound file? Well, all the more reason to log a ticket, and tell FD where to look.

That said, I recommend stepping down from the argument "it can't be a problem on my end because I know too much about / have spent too much money on computer audio"; while it might be compelling to you, it is counter-productive because it makes you blind on one eye. (Just as "it can't be the game because I don't hear static" blinds the other one.) You want to solve a problem? Be open to any possible explanation; leave categoric statements to people who just want to vent or find someone to blame.

Is the static constant? If so, perhaps your issue has less to do with the crackling sound issue. If not perhaps the latency is peaking but not being captured by the tool - idk.

Haha probably not! I used to dabble a bit with DirectX programming, but that was before DirectX 10 and they changed many things including the audio architecture (probably due to DirectShow's poorly designed, easily broken codec 'merit' system imo.). Apparently post Vista, DirectX is using software mixers! (OMG!!! see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technical_features_new_to_Windows_Vista#Audio_stack_architecture), but Windows 8 has re-introduced it. [OpenAL anyone :)]

Reminds me of the day Microsoft broke Windows Media Player back in the 90's - long time ago was it 7 or 8? I vaguely recall spotting that the wma decoder was a newer file, but had a lower version number than the one in the previous media player. The result - the old file was kept and media player broke. Coincidently Microsoft re-structured the architecture in the next release.

PS. I wonder if the hotfix mentioned on that page has anything to do with it -

THe static is not constant. I get popping / crackling noises when simply turning the orientation of my ship, and a steady white noise / crackling when throttling up, almost as if it were on a loop.

I've tried other sample rate setings, to no avail.

I get crackles and pops from my Razor Kraken headphones at some stations and when leaving but not at all stations. None of my other games seem to suffer from it. So perhaps its an intermittent fault. But it could be a very difficult one to track down when its not consistent.
But generally ED's sound is amazing.
