Please fix this thing that passes for a Docking computer

There is so little to do in-game, learn to dock, then learn to dock FA Off. It's so much fun.

So what do you do after you've docked a Beluga by coming through the mail slot FA-off, Rotation-Correction Off, backwards, while taking fire from a pirate in an Anaconda?

I know, you buy yourself a Docking Computer for a job well done.

Once you've developed that skillset you don't "reward yourself" by not properly flying your ship anymore. DC's are for two kinds of player: those that can't fly at a pro level, and those that are putting a bullseye on themselves for pirates & gankers. Nothing screams "Come and get me I'm not wearing any panties!" like a docking computer.

This mainly happens to me if I make myself a cup of tea. I just look at the screen with a blank expression. This is how I imagine I would be as an Anaconda pilot.

As someone who has given up trying to land on my own and has used a docking computer since I got the game on the 27th I can honestly say that I have only had ONE accident ever from the computer and it wasn't even the computers fault I don't think.

I was heading into the mail slot and a NPC controlled Type 9 came up off its pad and uppercut my ship right when it came in and the computer over compensated me right into the side of the station.

You've never heard it play the Blue Danube ? (I don't use it)
Speaking of that, can you get the song without the DC? Since 1984, when I was 10, any time I've heard the Blue Danube I've thought of Elite. Want the song, just don't want to give up a compartment to hear it...

update: ok. Bought the DC for a giggle. In '84, I could manually turn on the DC a long way from a station and listen to it while I did homework (as long as I didn't get Thargoid jumped). Sad it automatically engages now only in close proximity to the station. Modernization sucks. I want an Exploration Computer that honks and goes while the Blue Danube plays. ;)

YAWN... [rolleyes]

Did you even READ this thread before responding? This has nothing to do with skill. Everything to do with time management in-game.

And way to go there champ! Insult the lady while coming off as an arrogant jerk at the same time. Nice work.

While you are playing with your joystick on the pad, I am already docked and picking up my next stack of missions.

Hybrid DC landings... "Best kept secret in ED" :D

I'd rep you if I could! So a thank you will have to suffice I'm afraid [heart]

If you are "lucky" then the DC can get stuck queuing, and you can listen to the whole Blue Danube track

Got it last night at the CG in Open, and no-one even shot at me. Quite surprised.

You should beware of projecting your own shortcomings and insecurities on other players, it doesn't make you look macho, just insignificant.

This is sounding pretty good but one thing still needs to be added: If your ship is crashed and exploded by the docking computer you should not be responsible for the rebuy. Think of it like if a valet service crashes your car they are paying for it not you.

I'd check the small print on that one, it wouldn't surprise me if they were only responsible for/covered against third party injury only.

DCs are for landing your underpowered overloaded T9 or Anaconda at a base on a high g world.

Not being a pirate or ganker myself and therefore unaware of all the insider info but how do you know someone has a DC on board?

AI thrust code you say?

Would this happen to effect NPC piloting in general? For example, NPC ships or when a NPC crew member is flying your ship for you?

Yes, new thrust control code affects all AI piloting, including DC at planetary starports and ship dismiss/recall. :) I've debug-tested the DC landing at an engineer base artificially set to 9.2G, and it landed perfectly; when I tried the same landing, I crashed and burned... ;)

You know this is a game right? LOL [big grin]

Please say you've forgotten to switch the 9.2G back off. That would be quite entertaining to watch.

i think the docking computer should have a specific slot in the 'upcoming' panther clipper, instead of it's planetary approach suite.

the ship should be unwieldy and large enough that even tested pilots will want to auto-dock to avoid bumping. it's shields shouldn't protect it from as much ramming damage against a station because of it's size.
