Please remove magic combat powers from the game

Please remove magic powers from the game. Magic powers means any Star-Trek-Online-esque ability, like:
- knocking some particular subsystem of a ship offline temporarily
- instantly causing a random failure state in a target ship, like overheating, shields down, spinning hard after submitting to FSD interdiction, etc.
- the ability to heal another ship
- this covers most of the 'experimental effects' that came with engineers

While you're at it, please remove the dumb thing where NPC ships somehow magically find a player after they have been exploring in uninhabited systems for hours, alone, and attack just because the player has cargo. The NPCs usually never even bother to scan to find out what the player has, nor do they give players a chance to drop cargo to them once they are interdicted. Obviously the NPC is a crazy homicidal maniac, and not a pirate who wants cargo, because all they try to do is blow up the player, which destroys all their cargo.

Why attack players, anyway, when there is plenty of cargo up for grabs, for free, to anyone with an SRV? Can't pirates drive?

Getting randomly interdicted by a Deadly rating Fer De Lance or Python while peacefully exploring, then having them use all these ridiculous magic powers against me, is ridiculous. I know I have no chance against magic powers NPCs if I try to fight.

Like just now, this Python interdicts me in the absolute middle of nowhere. I submit and run to high wake, and it instantly hits me with some magic power that disabled my thrusters and shie I get back to supercruise with no shields and 45% hull. Then five seconds later it is interdicting again. So I submit again, but this time, I spin out violently, and go on full (long) FSD cooldown.... no doubt the effect of another magic power. Then the monster NPC death machine gets me down to 6% hull before I get back to FSD, barely alive.

What is the point of such an encounter? I'm not in an inhabited system. There is no way for this guy to even know I was there, or to know that I was carrying any cargo. What are these guys, psychic?

This bull crap is ruining the game, not making it better. I am fine with Engineers giving tweaks to existing gear such that it has some stats boosted, others weakened. But creating one-hit weapons and magic abilities to stack onto ships is just dumb. It is what Star Trek Online did, and it ruined that game.

Please keep Elite a realistic, balanced, reasonable type of simulation... not one where the game randomly tries to kill you with psychic griefer-NPCs, and some players have super-cheap, one-hitter weapons that are nothing better than magic harassment tools to which there is no counter.

Yup, remove all the magic. The other stuff seems ok but should add stuff we ask for.

So you want basically 2.1 rescinded because you got mauled by a python? Nice escalation there.

Nope, that's not what I said.

The magic powers are a very small part of 2.1. On the whole it is an excellent update. I just do not want to see this game going the way of Star Trek Online with its subnucleonic beams, viral matrix, and garbage powers like that. Mind you, this is a very slippery slope. Right now it is still possible to un-screw the game by removing these bad ideas. But once they have been there too long and more and more magic powers get added, then the game will be transformed beyond all recognition.

It happened to STO, although it started off basically halfway there already. I just hate to see a great game like this go the route of WoW combat with its AoE spells, disables, roots, stuns, etc. but just carried out in space.

Also, it's not because I got interdicted... I have no problem with being interdicted in the right context. What I have a problem with, however, is deus-ex-machina game events that breaks the suspension of disbelief by having something very unrealistic and ridiculous happen in a game that is supposed to err on the side of simulation and realism.

Game events should follow the principle of continuity. They should follow forward from some previous game event in a manner that is believable and fits in with the overall feel and style of the game. Random psycopathic NPCs equipped with preposterous one-hitter weapons, materializing out of thin air for no reason at all other than to kill you, does not achieve what I think Frontier is trying to achieve.

What it seems like to me is that some developer at Frontier was tasked with making NPC AI smarter, but instead, he just gave it magic powers, and hopes to point at player death rates as a sign that the "smarter AI" is working. It is not smarter, it's just as dumb as ever, with its inane one-liners demanding cargo and then attacking anyway even after cargo is given, attacking even though it is ususlly in an Eagle and I'm in an Anaconda.

Giving the AI shield-disabling death rays, and making it clairvoyant so it can peer through the spacetime continuum and find me no matter what system I'm in, is not a smarter AI. Those elements seem like crutches for an AI that is still as dumb as ever.

I'll be impressed with the AI when it stops doing idiotic things like killing itself by attacking me in weak ships, then coming after me in a ship that could take out the entire Thargoid armada and still letting me get away.

How about giving the AI a sense of self preservation? How about making it do smart things like actually communicating back and forth with the player, and only initiating hostilities if the player does not give it what it wants? How about making it able to beat players through fair play by using smart tactics, not just letting it win by giving it "I win button" guns?

See, there is some secret criminal NPC space pirate database of which CMDR bought which commodity where, and this database exists in all their brains simultaneously, like the borg. It is stupid. If that DB exists then players should be able to bribe their way out of it, or should have some way of evading that knowledge. It makes no sense that when you get assigned a mission, the person who assigned it to you instantly broadcasts to every escaped convict in the universe the fact that you're about to go do that mission, so please, come murder you. Why hire someone for a mission and then tweet, "@SpacePiratesEverywhere I just hired Vitamin Arrr to deliver three tons of biowaste, please ensure he doesn't succeed".

To be honest I think the game would be better without the special effects too. The engineer mods are already overpowered without the cherry on top. :p
