Pretty much NOT this!

The mission-board changes very well, depending on the state a given faction wich is present in that system. Also the government-type of the controlling faction determines, wether there is a blackmarket on station or not. At war you got war-related missions. During a pirate attack, Massacre-mission, during election Courier-missions, Boom-states or famines grant lots of profit for certain commondities.

But, yeah...it's all nothing but change of a text-box.

I suggest start playing the bgs before stating such nonsense.
I just travel to a different system. XD

All these places to go and people insist on sticking with a handful.

As for missions? Who needs missions? Just hit a RES or conflict zone, (Any conflict zone, I really don't care who wins), and blow up ships. Or buy cargo. Yes I actually buy cargo.

And I mean to be fair. It's a video game. Technically everything is just a text edit. Elite Dangerous politics are not real.

shrugs

Very much this!
The effects of the BGS could be so much more severe/drastic, have more effect than just who runs the show.
Change station appearance, change missions available, change goods available, change prices for certain goods, etc. Even make ships available only in certain states.

But that doesn't seem to matter. That little text field is more important than actual gameplay.
Odd that Carcosa was BGS manipulated to reinstate the system back to its native faction, which just happens to be an Anarchy, on the change the shipyard stocked a few Fed ships, the only shipyard in Colonia with them... Recently another system flipped (for the same faction) provided the first Imperial ship available in Colonia

But as you said, just a line of text....

I wish it did more flavour things though, especially for anarchies since they're so fundamentally different to other factions. There's no authority ships around them but that's about it - NPCs still flee without fighting back if you attack them inside the NFZ, the air traffic controller still complains about how reckless maneuvers won't be tolerated even though they never actually do anything about it, pirates that are after your cargo will about-face and jump out as soon as you request docking clearance, and so on.

Make them proper wretched hives of scum and villainy. Have pirates hang around outside the station instance, with the same sort of spawns you'd get at a nav beacon. Have NPC bounty hunters show up and get in fights with them, traders running the gauntlet. The station don't care but they will light up someone who accidentally hits the station itself. Air traffic controllers acting like the kind of criminal crazies you get in 90s-2000s-era sci fi drek, laughing over comms when you smash into someone, shouting encouragement if you blast someone inside the NFZ, that sort of thing.
Sinner's Inn in privateer 2 is a great archetype of space pirate nonsense, let's have more of that.

Here's another reason not to care about the BGS...

I don't care one way or the other if a system flips, what missions are available where or which ships are for sale out at Colonia. I generally fly around doing this n that. If a system doesn't have a mission that I want, I fly on to another and whaddya know... I can usually find what I am looking for.

The BGS is fluid. If I play in a group like Mobius or Solo or even Open, my outlook of the galaxy is the same... If I don't like what's going on where I am at, I can go somewhere else. And the bonus for me ... People suck. I don't have to put up with anyone's bull hockey but my own.

Victim blaming galore. "Fit a shield, submit and have a SCB and you're save." Spare me that. The last time I visited the golconda in open I was wing ganked by 4 guys. Grom FSD - bomb, rebuy before my FSD could reset. I fly a shield - heavy, fully engineered and A - rated anaconda with 8 shield boosters. I submitted, turned and immediately tried to high - wake; every advice the git good - folks throw around in here.

You really think a cargo ship with a weak shield will do the trick? Or be able to run from a grom FDL (or several) with more than 200 tons of cargo on board? Come on. Not everyone has a fully engineered Imperial Cutter, especially when the gankers actively seek out noobs with less capable ships.

This is how bullys behave. Usually they don't even have a cargo bay to scoop up the goods (because they fly PvP ships which don't have space for that). They just shred you for the lulz. And by the way: everytime I was interdicited (and that was often), it wasn't one of the oh so nice RP pirates. In fact I have never seen even a single one of them except on youtube. All I see is people who interdict you and immediately start shooting without even saying a word. Is that really what you all are trying to defend?

It's the internet after all. Anonymity unleashes peoples inner demons. The sad part however, that in elite, these people even morally (try to) justify themselves. Instead of just owning it. Ridiculous. :D

I've started playing in Solo.

Nothing to do with being ganked. I mean I was the one ganking innocent traders...

I'm just sick of the fact every time another player enters the instance all the ships go mental.

Solo is smooth and silky. At the moment I value my own performance above other people.
SO MUCH THIS -----^

Though in my case it also has to do with being ganked. I lost two PvP encounters last night because my opponent was performing the "Picard Maneuver", teleporting around me, supposedly ramming me even though they were nowhere near me in my end of the instance, hitting me even though I could not see the weapons fire, etc. I would have likely lost even if it were a fair fight, but this was just ridiculous.

And then there's the insane rubber-banding when NPCs are involved. I tolerated this at stations playing 2D, but in VR it's just too much. It also completely breaks PvE at places like a RES when NPCs are also warp-jumping around as you try to fix your weapons on them.

I don't know what Frontier did to so severely break instancing in the September update, but I've had enough. It looks like a fix is still months away, so unfortunately I too may be fleeing to Solo, at least in areas known to be crowded where I want to get actual "work" done. It's a real shame, because I'd much prefer playing in Open, but this Picard Network Bug ruins the experience for me :(

Heh, I was thinking of starting a thread on this but decided against it for obvious reasons... but yes I'm in the same boat almost. Biggest gripes I have with Open are the rubberbanding, and frame rate/timing issues whenever I hit a busy(ish) station, it's really taking me out of the game. Can't imagine how chunder inducing it must be in VR.

I spent most of my weekend at the CG, and there were a few other things that really quite annoyed me. When bounty hunting, I flew small ships (Courier, Viper Mk3) to practice fixed weapons so naturally it took me longer to defeat NPCs. Every single time other players shared the instance, they stole my kills. I mean - I observe the situation and let them have their own kills, but I would like to get the same treatment in return, too much to ask for I guess.

And these are supposedly experienced players with Corvettes and Deadly/Elite rank. With one player I got so frustrated I opened fire on him... never normally do that but I just snapped. Had to switch to Solo a number of times just to get a couple of kills under my belt from testing my loadouts (and slowly chipping into the CG bounty goal).

Not to mention said players employing SLFs in the RES. At one time I had two Vettes with an SLF tagging along each. The resulting lag was dreadful and required a session restart. Maybe they're not aware of this bug, but it was still annoying all the same.

The most fun I had was actually playing cat and mouse in and outside the CG station, with 2-3 players engaging in some sort of "blockade". But those moments are few and far between; I even tried my luck pirating a CMDR T9 (in my Viper Mk4 lol), he low-waked before I could engage (serves me well for being a polite pirate, using comms and all... should've just blasted at him like everyone else).

But it crosses my mind more often these days, switching to Solo - I'm not good at offensive combat (and don't want to fly pure PvP builds - most of the time I want my ships to have sufficient utility to engage with various other in-game content), but pretty adept at evasion, but that gets old after a while as it's quite easy depending on the build. I don't know. For the most part though, it's really the technical issues that are driving me towards it.

So much.

I was going to include System Comms in my little rant, but have figured out it's possible to hide it.

The handbags and bickering going on in the CG system is something else - you think at times the game actually isn't just played by old farts but primarily teenagers (or old farts with a unique approach to "young at heart"). It also drowns out any sensible/important bits, such as wing invites etc. Anyways... different topic.

Same thing happened to me in my Eagle. I always invite players to wing with me to avoid this, yet so many just ignore the invite. I actually blocked one guy for doing this (and jamming things up with his SLF). Of course I know how you all feel about blocking, and it finally got to the point where I started to agree - might as well just switch to Solo...

It really disappoints me, because CGs have such potential to be a fun multiplayer experience. I don't understand how this broken network code is so low on Frontier's priorities. A lot of us buy our paint packs out of "vanity", to be seen by other players. There's zero point in these cosmetics if I'm stuck in Solo. Do you hear that, Frontier, this bug is going to affect your BOTTOM LINE!

GRRRR....

To be honest... it did cross my mind a few times to just block those players - but since I never met them before, it's unlikely I'll meet them again (btw I've since cooled down since our little discussion re blocking and concluded I don't really care either way:p).

But yes I do not get why FDev is not fixing the netcode - it worked (reasonably) well before September, and now it's 90% an issue (at least for me), whereas nothing changed from a technical point of view on my side (and other players have the same issues). If I was FDev, I'd make that the top priority item as that has the potential to drive people away from the game as well - but I don't think it's even on the list at all for the January update, unless I'm mistaken?

Imagine you buy this online spacegame and the first thing you see is ships juddering around like they have seizure. Not a great first look but Solo fixes this 100%. I don't want to play in Solo though.

What you all wrote… It's really annyoing at the moment, mostly near starports though.
Rubberbanding is hilariously bad.
Yup. And the SLF lag, it's the first time I experienced it first hand, and my word is it bad. Frame drops of 10+ (which is a lot when you're holding on to 50 to maintain a smooth experience...) and overall jerkiness. It does remind me a little of the slowly creeping in lag that happened when in AX CZs (bless them...) after a few minutes - that could only get fixed by completely restarting the game from desktop.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. Dropping in an open instance in Shinrarta takes ages, what happens next is hilarious indeed, literally everyone and everything is everywhere. I was wondering how people were able to gank anyone there. I thought my connection was bad, the leg of a chair on a cable or something...

It's mostly near starports, in empty instances when getting pulled it's not as bad.
When we were repairing ports at the weekend, with instances of 6-8 ships, there wasn't any weapon fire at all
and still everyone was all over the place.
It wasn't even framerate drops, it was ships being in two places at once (who called it Picard maneuver was right)
and inexplicable "clumsiness" (I have no better word for the unresponsiveness)...

I discovered it's very easy to block people from the system comms channel. I did this to a bunch of foul-mouth chest-beating immersion-breaking brats last night. Since I'll likely to stick to Mobius for CGs going forward, this shouldn't ruin anyone's instancing, and it'll keep my comms clean.
