Please stop pushing out patches in the multiple GB's!

That was 56 kbit/s.... my first one was 33.5 kbit/s :D

Back in the early nineties my whole company was connected to the 'net via a PAD system which was on a 9600 baud backbone. I used to have to transfer text files via Kermit to Edinburgh Uni. Even a 12K data file would take around 10-15 seconds to send. :)

33K6 was typical in 1995-1996 with 56K (which wasn't really 56K, but that's a different story) high-end at first, and then more popular by 1998. I was on broadband, 512K cable, in 1999 and only changed my Motorola SB4100 modem this year when I went up to 50Mbit.

To stay on topic, the patches seem perfect to me. 1 or 2 minutes, so I'd be guessing around the 300-500MB mark?

Mine was a 2400 baud modem.

Which to convert to today's terms is ~1.2kbit/s. =p

I can't know something is wrong until I speak up and see how other's are getting on.

The replies to this thread have mostly been hostile, not what I expected at all.

Yes I was mistaken and I apologise, but it was preventing me from playing a game I'd just bought and I was (rightfully) frustrated.

That's quite you can't, maybe next time though you could ask a question such as "Is there an issue with patches or are the patches for the game exceedingly large ?" What you did is moan that FD shouldn't be doing something like producing large patches which is

A: Bleating for no good reason and B: Bleating for no good reason

Thanks for the advice.

Thinking about it, my line is technically 12mbit, which would mean 1mb/s would be about right. It seems to be consistently downloading at about 0.7, so ~700k/sec, so I can't complain about the speed really.

Again, I think it's an installation issue that I hadn't considered when making the initial post.

Thanks to those helpful replies guys. Without chatting to others I had no way of knowing everyone wasn't experiencing the same. :)

Another factor could be your hard drive access times. The nature of the ED patching is this (more or less) :
1) Download a manifest of files to be checked against what's on the hard drive.
2) For each item in that manifest, check to see if A) The file exists and B) The file that exists is the same version as the one in the manifest.
3) If 2A or 2B is false, then that file will be downloaded from the ED servers.

Steps 2 & 3 involve a lot of disk accessing - reading and writing. If your drive is being slow for whatever reason, then this problem could appear as "It takes ages for patching!!".

Search for a decent drive speed checking utility. Also, check to see if your filesystem need defragmenting - that might speed things up a tad too.

Hope this helps.

Ok

Just got home downloaded patch.

So our multi-gigabyte patch is in fact.....

Go on have a guess in your mind, how by do you think it will be?

wait for it!

A massive 26.34MB over 19 files, not multiple gigabytes, 20 odd meg!
