Thread: Oculus pre order information

Hey everyone,

With the news that Oculus are starting pre order of their consumer version tomorrow, I wanted to just make a quick post to confirm that we are still actively working with Oculus but currently the only SDK we are able to officially support is 0.6.

We wanted to make sure you had as much up to date information as possible and will let you know as soon as we have any more information.

Fly safe, Commanders!

Hey all,

I just thought I would post a quick follow up on this thread.

First of all, I just wanted to confirm that VR certainly is a priority. We really do believe in the immersion and experience VR brings and we're delighted to leading the way in that field. As we've said previoulsy, we are actively working with Oculus and we will be keeping people updated as soon as we can.

I can once again confirm that we do not have an exclusivity deal with Steam VR.

Hope that helps.

Zac

The 2 posts above by Zac Antonaci are good reference, but I would also mention what's flashing as a preminent feature in Elite Dangerous main site:

https://www.elitedangerous.com/en/made-for-vr/

It would be good to know if that bold statement is still valid, or if ED is made for "just some" VR and not other, as based on what I'm reading around it seems that the Cobra engine is not that easy to be adapted to all VR standards.

Meanwhile I second OP request about getting from Frontier Development some official answers about Oculus CV1 support: I've preordered it hoping that Elite Dangerous is really made for VR, and not just for one VR system... (otherwise at least correct the "MADE FOR VR PAGE"...)

So long as it isn't pay-to-win, what's so different from Elite selling cosmetics?

Elite is "pay to display",
Star Citizen looks like it's heading for "pay to win",

There is something much worse than either of those two, "pay to play".

I'm not particularly bothered whether Valkyrie is pay to play. I can't see it bettering anything that Elite: Dangerous currently does. I don't mind losing this game by not pre-booking my CV1 order. I want to see how things settle down anyway.

Please remember to keep us informed about how the support is going.

We've supported VR for a few years now, and Elite Dangerous is arguably the world's leading VR-ready game. We want to give players the best possible VR experience however they play - it's something we talked about with Digital Foundry recently - and that means focusing our efforts. Right now, we've chosen to focus on SteamVR. We haven't cut an exclusivity deal with any VR manufacturer, and we're still working with Oculus on Rift support.
