Please teach this long term player how to pirate

Hi all.

I have never been able to bring myself to do it! Even to AIs. But want to give it a go.
Briefly:
  • I am not into min:maxing
  • I prefer ships with character.
  • Happy to call it a day after 2 or 3 successful... acquisitions?
  • Defo don't want to destroy target, even AI.
  • Don't mind running away if I bite more than I can chew

So I would really appreciate some tips to get me started e.g.:
  1. Most thematic ship?
  2. How should I equip said ship?
  3. What systems to aim for?
  4. Basic strategies?
  5. Things to watch out for, be wary of?
  6. Do I need to wear a funny hat?
Any advice, gratefully received!
Just do what would otherwise make you angry...copy and paste!

I finally got pack hounds so I went to Cupisii to test my Phantom's loadout (and pilot's skills :D ).

I left Foale Station, got into SC, a Type-7 with 130T of LTDs was 7th or 8th contact that appeared on the list. Interdiction, drives off, ram-to-stop, got 96T of LTDs (forgot to replace class 5 scoop with cargo rack at the station), off to sell. Visited several stations with black market, the highest price I got was 82k per T. So I earned less than 8M. 🤨

I went back to Cupisii, AspX with 35T of LTDs was 5th contact on the list. I was too happy on pack hounds, so the prey didn't make it through the stopping procedure.

It seems, however, that finding a good prey and stealing stuff is not a problem.

But how to find a good place to sell it...?

Let’s just say that you don’t do it for the money!
But seriously: you can normally find a best sell station on inara that will give you around 400k on the black market, maybe 300k with the recent rebalance.
What we really should have by now is ships that carry other high value minerals such as void opals - fdev??

the highest paying station for legal LTD and a black market - you'll get 75% of what you get for legal LTD. .. or, if interested, i can set up a buyorder on my FCs blackmarket and cut you a good price ;-) are there actually FC out there providing that service?

Private Courier services can have some decent stuff in em.

Sadly inara has no prices for precious gems, ai relics etc. I would not know how to max that profit. I have a nice stash waiting for a good buyer. I also put it as a sale order on my fc.

Just robbed a Keelback in medium security system. Police popped in, I triggered silent running, they didn't find me and left after a short while. The Keelback had several types of stuff, still worth pennies.

Then I got Type-7, competent and wanted. Took me a bit longer to disable the drive, so the police attacked and destroyed her before I could get to cargo. I didn't even check what she hauled.

You can also let them jump out of the system, and follow them using a wake scanner: they normally end up in an anarchy system, where you can interdict again and rob without being disturbed. Of course this takes a wile so only worth it for the bigger fish.

Yesterday I met an elite courier Keelback which was too agile for me to kill the drives in 4 minutes (before police arrived). Looks like some work needs to be done on my flying skills... :p

I jumped today on an elite Private Courier Type-10 flying alone in a low security system. It took me 20-ish seconds from the first shot to take down shields and reduce drives to 36%. I was turning back to finish the job, pretty sure that I still had a good 3 minutes to do that, when a wing of three elite police Vipers popped in and forced me to, well, change my plans. I barely escaped with 23% hull.

What has really happened? Why the wing was there so immediately in a low security system?

usually the private courier large ships have escorts, i guess it took some time for those to spawn (or jump in).
