Please use the SEARCH function before posting

Appreciate it as I've said it a bunch of times already. However, this is a waste of time. I even know when I've said it that it's a waste. The people that don't use search know it's there, they know they can use it, but they don't care. It's easier to just make their own thread, in their eyes. It's been this way since forums have existed. We're all special snowflakes that need our own soapboxes. People feel entitled to ask questions in their own threads. What you get in a thread like this is everyone just preaching to each others choir. All it serves is to be another thread where people vent their frustration on the issue and it doesn't solve the actual problem. All you can really do is just let the moderators try to catch it and take care of it or report it and move on.

It is actually worse than that. In a lot of cases (not pointing fingers at the OP here) we get "I'm a special snowflake" threads posted by people where it seems that the reason they do so is because they think they are important. So, for example, there is a prominent thread about explorers who have got to the galactic core. It is regularly (but not all the time), on or near the first page of threads on the forum. I find it hard to believe that people sufficiently interested in exploring to go to the core are unaware of its existence, even without searching. Nevertheless, we get individual "I made it to the core" threads.

Seconded - however in defense of the duplicate posters, I have to say the forums search function is really poor - searching the forums using google usually yields far better results for me.

^ this. I have searched for certain strings within a thread, by post content and title, come up with nothing, but then by double checking the slow way found the string I was looking for in several places. Search doesn't always work as you'd like, so cut people some slack.

Type what you want in the google search bar followed by site:forums.frontier.co.uk

And yet because the search functions suck, people are unlikely to find your post explaining this once it is off the front page, unless by accident. The whole thing goes around and around. :p

We also get individual "my thoughts / review" and "my first PvP kill" threads. They don't really hurt - they drop into page 3 oblivion after a few responses (or none) and that's it.

Yeah, I don't know what platform it's built on but you can't search using various criteria like other forums sadly.

When I mentioned it in another thread, Brett told me it was vBulletin's fault that the search 'feature' is craptastic and to go complain to them, as there wasn't a whole lot he could do to make it better.

I do more or less what Catpain Kirk does, I use Google to find what I'm looking for here. It's sort of a pain, but generally works far better than the internal search does.

I recall seeing several threads like this one, perhaps the OP should have done a search before posting this. ;-)
