Pledged to Patreus: Did we kill the Emperor? (Problem with PP)

Yes, simply. Vyvian knows how I feel about this. Since Powerplay came out it feels like the Powers have less personality than before. This is all kinds of wrong. It's not exactly spurring on the commanders. Powerplay should be giving us MORE personality, more colour, more depth to this world and more roleplay! We should be getting sucked in to this story and thrilled to be making a difference for our Powers. Instead the difference we do make goes unacknowledged by the Powers, and sometimes FD just plonk a plot twist right down that our commanders couldn't have done anything about or effect in any way, basically wrenching away the control we've supposedly been given with Powerplay and dropping us right in it.
What you describe is like you get mandatory conscripted in the military force or a mercenary who don get a s h i t about the employer as long as the credits come. Maybe you should join another power, a power who gets you the freedom to roleplay whatever you want. Hint: check the underdogs :D

Does Archon Delaine or Pranav Antal regularly communicate with their commanders? Answer: sadly, no more than any other Power. That's not the point though - it'd be nice for commanders to get some interaction with their Power, but it'd just be a bonus. The problem is the leaders, all of them, have been showing very little personality at all since Powerplay came out, when Powerplay was supposed to immerse us further in the roleplay, the environs and characters of this galaxy. And, far from giving us the power to shape the storyline, commanders' actions have minimal effect and FD can just drop whatever they like on us at any time regardless of what actions we've been taking. The leaders really have been reduced down to 2D pictures and had all their personality sucked out of them. It's very disappointing.

Join Arissa Lavigny Duval, earn PP credits, and then earn bonuses on top of your bounties or combat bonds.

You can't trust them silly feds anyway! They are a bunch of old farts.

I am actually considering doing this and that is the problem.

Before Powerplay if I compared Patreus and Arissa it would look like this:

Patrues is strengthing the Empire. He ensures that other systems pay their debts to himself and the Empire. He makes sure that they respect the Empire's might. Anyone not able to pay the debts and refuses to find an honourable sollution gets invaded and the system is added to the mighty Empire. Patreus is good for the Empire.

Arissa is only looking to strengthen her own claim on the throne. She is seeking her own private army by arming refugess and paying huge bonuses to Bounty Hunters. She is willing to slander any opponents to the throne and happy to invent false charges against other senators. Arissa is bad for the Empire.

Now with Powerplay it looks like this:

Patreus is expanding his own interests through out Imperial, Federation and Independant space. So is Arissa.
Patreus rewards me for killing things. So does Arissa.
Patreus gives me a reason to kill Feds. So does Arissa.
When I help Patreus, his bubble gets a little bigger. Same with Arissa.
Patreus's bubble is Light Blue. Arissa's is Purple.
Patreus gives a discount on weapons. Arissa pays huge bonuses for bounty hunting so basically everything is at a discount.

So, without either character having a continuing story to compel me to help them, there is no difference what so ever between them, other than Arissa's bonus is better.

So I might as well join Arissa, something I would never have done before Powerplay.

Or I could join Archon, seeing as he is happy for me to kill Feds as well.

Next on fednet : Hudson death by pretzel. <---- it almost happened once, a long time ago.

LOL. Maybe Nanomam could then sell Hudson Pretzels as a rare good.

Ahhh my point is if you join Archon Delaine you can roleplay as a mercenary who don't give a s h i t about politics, only credits for me thank you, see ya at the next paycheck :D

Maybe it's just us Patreus supporters seeing a problem here. Maybe it's because we're the idealists, not just mercenaries.

Thing is Starcloak and myself were not conscripted. We joined Patreus for what we saw were good reasons. We didn't join up for the bonuses, or weapons, or merits or the measly salary. We joined to fight for Patreus and strengthen the Empire through his leadership.

But now he is nothing more than a portrait on the Powerplay screen, with only the portrait differentiating him from any of the other powers.

You can roleplay exactly the same thing working for Patreus, so what is the difference between them other than the haircut?

First: I agree, so far I see no connection between the main story and the effects of Powerplay. I understand that it means a lot of work for the writers to adapt to what those darn humans do with their Powerplay mechanic, but I initially understood that this was exactly the idea behind PP, so I am a bit disappointed too.

Maybe it's because we're the idealists, not just mercenaries.

I have to ask: Then why join the Empire in the first place? To me there is a pretty clear cut choice for idealists, and that's Felicia Winters. It's the least attractive of the Superpower-Powers as it requires huge financial investments for everything except undermining and it is the only power with a real humanitarian agenda where every system you expand to has obvious benefits for the poeple living there (abolishment, increased standard of living).

Why didn't you join us? I know this is why I joined us...

There is a big difference: more enemies to shot. Maybe because of my EVE background, i prefer a healthy NBSI policy. NBSI means "Not Blue Shoot It", so if you have a very small number of "blues" (friends, alies, whatever), you have a bigger number of targets. Being on the last place in power play and hated by the most of the galaxy helps a lot. On the other hand the empire is the darling for the David Braben (or so i read on these forums), have the most supporters, and pretty good bonuses/weapons/toys etc; to get the things worse Archon Delaine supporters get one of the most, i really don't know how to describe this thing without breaking a lot of forums rules, let's say it's a weapon of some sort, so yeah the Archon Delaine crew it's guaranteed to have the smallest numbers of commanders on board.

I definitely agree that all the PP characters have become lifeless. After reading threads here and Reddit by different factions, Galnet is failing to provide meaningful background to the potentially great material from PP interactions and background plots.
I understand that coming up with stories and writing them takes time but I think they are a key component to the colouration of the galaxy. Even petty scandal stories or blatant propaganda exercises would go some way to making the PP characters fleshed out more, like Archon sponsoring an orphanage (mostly of his making) or Winters cousin exposed as an onionhead muncher.
I miss the gossip Galnet stories that painted Aisling as a bland attention seeker or Hudson as an hard-line non conformist. These stories really were background that enabled a sense of depth to the PP celebrities.

Could not agree more. I loved those hilarious stories. They added colour. I mean sure, once in a while we get a Power making a statement - like recently Patreus talking about his reaction to the Emperor's death, but it was such a brief statement and offered no guidance or commendations to his pilots. And it's been forever since I read a Galnet statement where Winters or Hudson or Torval or Mahon said anything.

Part of the problem is that FD handed off Galnet articles to us... without handing off the Powers to us. Now I get that some submissions are silly and FD don't want the plot to get out of control. But now Galnet is flooded by player written articles in which we the players are not allowed to write the Powers at all - we're not allowed to put words in their mouths or make them take action. Again I understand not wanting folks to mess up the story, but at the same time, Galnet has turned into a player action report with most of the workload on us with FD showing up once in a while to drop an all-too-brief couple of sentences in the mouths of the Powers. Come on! Where's the vibrancy, the vitality, the colour, the LIFE in our leaders?! In our galaxy?!

Yes, I'm frustrated. The characters and plot have the seeds of something gripping and compelling, and I want to get lost in the world, I really do. I'd love to get sucked into an immersive roleplay experience. Instead I'm here, number crunching and playing general directing our troops across the galaxy map and making up my own commendations from the Senator to buck up our commanders. The game should be providing this! The characters should be motivating their people, and drawing the players in. Instead we have silence, for the most part, in a lifeless, grey galaxy, doing the same tasks week in week out with no end ever in sight and you get penalised if you dare to go off and do something else! In no way does this seem to be being addressed...

I'm disappointed. I'm disappointed, FD. I want to love this game, I want you to draw me in and get me lost in a galaxy of colourful and complex characters and sophisticated, smart, compelling plot twists. And that's why I'm disappointed. Because it's nowhere near that. Not at all. The story and character have become less compelling and more lifeless since Powerplay came out, and that's not how it should be. :(

Yes you did and should feel bad about it.

But noone will, because we can't have the empire act like an actual empire when the emperor dies. First of all, the undermining mechanic between imperials is tedious and has penalties, so nobody wants to do it. Moreover, it wouldn't be fun if 30% of the playerbase started playing the game instead of bashing on small powers.

Heck, the empire is that much of a coward they don't even bother with the continuous undermine they get from Hudson and Winters, which will destroy Torval in the upcoming months. They instead try to focus on an Alliance that barely provoked them and a pirate group with no power.

As an Aisling supporter, I'm asking myself a similar question: Did we kill the Emperor? The problem being, I can quite see it would be the best thing to do both from a roleplaying perspective (challenge us do-gooder types who joined her, face the Imperial v Humanitarian tension to crisis) and from a gameplay point of view (split the two biggest factions apart and have them turn on each other).

If I was FD I would be announce the Darius family had been taken hostage to force his compliance and may have been sold as slaves by an unscrupulous underling, then launch a "treasure hunt" community goal to scan ships with illegal goods. If you find Darius family then acquire and return to a faction of your choice for questioning...

...

It would be a lot of work re-writing the story as we make changes in powerplay, and have never really expecting FD to do that, but I did expect to read stories about growing tensions between The Empire and the Federation due to the activity in Powerplay, growth of the Alliance, fears of Independant systems, that sort of thing. Nothing major has to come of it, just as the Cold War on Earth eventually ceased without a shot being fired, but we still heard about it and many lived in fear of it.

The players do make up some stories and some good ones at that, but we never hear from the Imperial Senate or whatever corrupt caucus the Alliance calls a government., or more so about the waxing or waning of support for these Powerplay characters within their own major faction.

Shouldn't the Alliance be proclaiming Mahon as their greatest ever leader by now?

I know of one Idealist who has certain leanings towards Winters...

But as far as I am concerned, I think you would find my ideals a little too different. Idealist can be a very broad term.

By the way, how do you find the water in Winter's controlled space, still full of suppressants to keep the population docile, or has her humanitarian agenda allowed them to ease up on their use a little? :)

There is a big difference: more enemies to shot.

Killing Feds is quite enough for me.

To be honest, while I was among the first to talk about an offensive against Archon, in my view it was only to be a short jab to keep you out of our space, so that we could go back to killing Feds.

Why did you have to be so stubborn and make it into a war?

Love the Orphanage idea!

I don't understand why it's gone backwards. Before Powerplay we often had interesting things written about the characters, now nothing. Maybe Archon supporters don't see it because he was only tacked on at the time of powerplay, but many of us had been supporting these characters for a long time already.

I was always happy to support Patreus. Look at the war in Durius. So many reasons not to fight in that war but many of us still did because we wanted to see what effect we would have on the Story. In the end there was no great reveal, no great revelation, but it didn't matter because we were still given something back and with the promise of more to come if we continued to help Patreus and the Empire.

I would like to participate in powerplay to hear more about how the powers interact with one another, but sadly that has stopped too. When did Aisling last get in slinging macth with Torval or Arissa? That was always fun to read, and you would think that with them often competing for the same systems we would see more of it but no, just silence.

To be honest i not consider this a war; it's a normal state of the game, after all we play a game with ships and guns, so it's natural to me to shot and be shot by (almost) everything in my interdiction range. Personally i started to play few weeks before power play, and when the update was launched, i read the Galnet about the powers and i make my choice. The lack of consistency about the NPC leaders doesn't bother me much; they are here only to give us some reason to have fun.
I agree it's way better when the story behind this is well written, but i prefer from FD to focus on solving more pressing issues like instancing, p2p multiplayer architecture etc etc.

Spoken like a professional killer, my respect sir. One day we shall meet, and then we shall see who wants it more, the one who fights for money or the one who fights for an ideal.

Unfortunately, I suspect your ideal is money, and with my belief in Patreus fading, I might soon only be in it for the money. :)

Sure the game has technical problems, but I doubt the person who was writing the Galnet articles is also hired there as a programmer. Frontier have manged in the past to write engaging story while putting out bug fixes.

Thank you. I love to roleplay as an assassin and i enjoy the assassination missions even against civilians; if the credit are good, sure why not. On the other hand i should warn you: if we meet in space and you are better than me i will run like a champ, i am one of the best at this.
Off topic; around one week ago, i was in the vicinity of Nanomam and run a mission to kill some civilians, when i see in space a wanted Aisling commander and also mission target. I atacked the guy (i was in courier and him in viper), and after a while i run out of ammo on my multicannons. I was prepared to high jump but i stayed more to tell the guy he is my mission target; we laugh a lot and i upload a screenshot to believe me. It was a way better pilot than me, and my point is, i know how to run and i am not afraid to use it :D

:D It's true, and I don't make a secret of it because my loyalty to Senator Patreus is genuine and I've got nothing to hide - besides, Patreus isn't that vain sort who demand unqestioning obedience; the Senator makes it his business to understand what is in the hearts and minds of those who follow him, to be questioned and challenged by intelligent commanders he can delegate to.

I chose to pledge allegiance to Patreus over Winters because of what I'd seen as a Federal commander; the Federation crushed under its own weight of bureaucracy and ineffectualness. The parties vying for power block each other at every turn, so no President can make the truly great changes the Federation needs. And when the President fails to deliver, voters with little understanding of the nature of politics, berate them for merely doing the best they can, not comprehending the opposition they face, and flip their vote to the other party - you only have to see how the Presidency has swung from one party to the other to see the widespread reactionary voting from an electorate that fails to appreciate the realities of politics, and in some cases just can't be bothered to vote at all. How many Federal veterans remember Lugh? I do. On so many occasions the Federation has simply been too ineffectual and bogged down. I agree with Winters' policies of improving standard of living for the citizenry, and of intelligent and considered governance, and her determination to reduce the power of the big corporations, tackle slavery on the borders, and de-commercialise the Federation. But I believe Senator Patreus has a better chance. Authoritarianism is a risk, often dependent on the leader, but it comes with a huge advantage of being able to take effective action; and from everything I have seen I believe the Senator is intelligent enough and experienced enough, and I agree with his aims of an improved, revamped, prosperous Empire.

I would agree with you... except for the fact that recently, in the past few months, to me it feels like FD just don't know where they are going with the story. Plotlines have been dropped with no explanation, weak strands floated that no one buys into. Patreus was all poised to roll into Kui Hsien at one point, and that storyline was dropped without a trace - we didn't even get an explanation like "they resolved it and came to an agreement" or anything; the plot was just dropped without a word. Lady Kahina, supposed to have her ship outfitted for what looked like this big expedition; then we hear nothing about it for weeks, and then she simply goes missing and its discovered that all those modules were fakes? Sounds like a poorly written abort attempt from a planned plot involving Kahina that FD just decided to drop, one that they couldn't convincingly write their way out of so they just gave us this silly "oh the modules were all fake all along" thing that I'm not buying into. Halsey dying as the result of engine failure? Does anyone buy that?! That is the most unconvincing and boring wrap up to her story ever. And who didn't see the Emperor's death coming and know that it would immediately implicate Patreus? I think everyone on the forums saw that one. Not forgeting Cmdr Sparkles who two weeks earlier on reddit called it in one.

I wouldn't mind FD keeping control of the Powers' stories if they wrote a more coherent and compelling story - as it is all these loose threads and dropped plots and all the characters being so quiet and lifeless since PP hit, I want better than that.

Unfortunately, I suspect your ideal is money, and with my belief in Patreus fading, I might soon only be in it for the money.

For me it's my belief in FD that's fading as a result, not my belief in the Senator, though I agree with everything you've said here.

Always remember:

If you targets runs, it's because you have defeated them. If you run, it's just a tactical retreat.

I think we still have a long way to go with the stories regarding the deaths of the Emperor and Halsey. Expect much more to come to light on both of these subjects. Though I wouldn't hold out hope that we will in anyway effect these stories or how they play out, not unless we go back to the days where the Powerplay characters were involved in CGs.

The stories regarding Lady Kahina relied on Drew Wagar, as she is from his book. Not quite sure what is going on between Drew and FD, but it may be due to artistic differences between the two parties. I'm sure their is someone on these forums, possibly even Drew, who could give you a clearer response.

Not sure what you mean about Kui Hsein. I fought there for Patreus. He payed me a kingly sum for my efforts as well. Kui Hsein is now under Imperial control and exploited by Patreus.

Oh and as far as the death of the Emperor at the wedding and Patreus gets the blame; I called it months ago :) Really I did.

All I got to say is that, so far in the Apalar CG, I've been pirated 4 times by Imperial citizens, but 0 times from supporters of Archon's crew.

So don't trust the claims of a power that is based on hypocrisy.

Yes you did and should feel bad about it.

But noone will, because we can't have the empire act like an actual empire when the emperor dies. First of all, the undermining mechanic between imperials is tedious and has penalties, so nobody wants to do it. I'm not sure I follow. Are you saying that the Kumo crew are hypocrites because they haven't attacked you? Or the Imperials because they have?
You also said that Imperials are cowards because they're not attacking the Federation - so who has been?
One last point, strategic one at that. What makes more sense - to try to destroy a big enemy first, or try to destroy a smaller one? Bear in mind that both pose a risk to you.
