Point defense weapons and other Guardian stuff

Commanders,
Against previous inclinations I've decided to go for the Guardian FSD booster and undertake the Guardian site challenge. Have seen most if not all of the very helpful YT vids posted and have a generally good idea as to how to go about it. I am however a bit unclear on a few fine points;
  • can I mount PDW's on an AspX ? two or more ? My plan is to land in close proximity to the Guardian site, have the PDW's defend me from missles while in my SRV
  • are there any immediate power management issues to be aware of brought on by the PDW's ? Maybe I should keep them unpowered until landing ?
  • does it take Dav's Hope style relogging to acquire enough of the needed mats ? Do all twelve Sentinels respawn each time ?
  • when/ if I get killed by the Sentinels do I re-spawn at my home base ? Or nearest base ?
My AspX is lightweight and dedicated to weaponless exploration, G5 Engineered shields, FSD but no weapons. As a side note, am generally disinterested in combat-oriented ED play style, this YT vid really caught my eye and gave me a feeling of wanting to give ( combat) another go;

The AspX is the ship I've used for all of my guardian needs (have unlocked 3 modules so far), it works quite well. Just make sure to put the PD on the top utility hardpoints. I use 2 but I suspect 1 would be enough.

Regarding pips, I put 4 to weapons and 2 to shields after landing. I like to land with 4 to shields and 2 to engines, hence why I do it after.

Yes, you will need to do dav's hope style relogging to stock up on materials, most likely. And most definitely if you want more than one blueprint from the site. Yes the sentinels respawn. If you don't need more blueprints and just relog for the materials, however, they won't. It's activating to the "puzzle" aspect that spawns them and you only need to do that if you need the blueprints.

Also be advised that you need to move away from the guardian site to relog, not far, but a few hundred meters.

Regarding getting killed, if you explode your SRV you end up back in your ship, right there at the site. But without an SRV of course, unless you brought more than one (I carry 2 on my AspX). That being said, you won't die unless you are really, really bad. The opponents barely dent the SRV's shields, you have to be practically AFK before the SRV is actually going to take damage. Also don't forget that you can repair the SRV in the field with Synthesis.

Good luck commander! 07

You can put Point Defense on any ship in any utility slot. The Asp X has 3 on the top side, and 1 underneath. The bottom one won't do any good when landed. I've never used PD at the sites, as I've never had issue taking out the Sentinels (once I got used to them).

Their power draw is .2, that's not much, but depending on your power availability, do what you need to do.

If you want to sit at one site and get whatever you need, you can do it that way, but there are a lot of sites in the region with several different layouts. I fly around and visit them all, as I enjoy the process. Some of the Sentinels have some sort of proximity spawn, with either 1 or 2 popping up. Once the Pylons are all charged, a couple more will spawn.
when/ if I get killed by the Sentinels do I re-spawn at my home base ? Or nearest base ?
If you get blown up in your SRV you find yourself back in your ship. If you manage to lose your Asp X to Sentinels, please post a video! I'd love to watch that.

EDIT: PARK BRAKE IS YOUR FRIEND!

I found that at some sites when 4 or 5 sentinels spawn at once having 2 PD's in the top utility slots worked really well. It is MUCH easier to deal with the sentinels when the PD's shoot down most of the missiles. PD's don't consume much power at all. There are no downsides to putting them on a Guardian excavation build.

If you go to systems like COL 173 Sector JX-K B24-0 there are 3 guardian ruins on two planets within 15LS of each other. Instead of re-logging you can travel back and forth between the two planets if you want. I can't emphasize enough how awesome this system is for getting guardian commodities and also obelisk data. I am there now trying to get both commodities and more pattern epsilon data.

If you do get stuck, exit to the main menu and rejoin it will move you out of range but not to far and you should be able to right yourself. You will lose your progress though since the site will reset.

Is it hard to kill those sentinels from an SRV ?
Not at all, just takes quite a few bullets. Bring materials to synth SRV ammo. 4 pips to weapons and 2 to shields is what I use or I run out of capacitor energy for the SRV guns before one is killed....but other than it taking a lot of bullets, they aren't hard at all, particularly with PD on a nearby ship taking care of their missiles.

not at all, they wont even launch missiles if you start hitting them right away and drop all your power to weapons to keep firing. They have never broke my shields even in 3 on 1 cause I could use cover.

Not really. Just switch to turret view, get the aiming reticule somewhere near the target, make sure it's locked up and let rip. I'm in an ASPX and with 4 pips to WEP, I tend to rest the guns to give it time to recharge a little before continuing. The sentinels tend to die within 3-4 salvos and they shouldn't hurt you much in that time.

Just keep an eye on your armour, fuel and ammo and synthesise as necessary when they get low. Running out of ammo in the middle of combat isn't a good plan, although it should still not cause too much pain if it happens.

With 3 PDW on the top of my ship, the missiles are never a problem.

Well I’ll def be using the handbrake. I’m hoping I can pull this off w/o getting stuck or killed. I’m going to post my AspX Guardian site build to see what you guys think.

you only need to land on planet for data and blueprints now...
Mats can be collected from the safe slow flight in space...
just avoid any higher than grade 0 degraded emission USS or you get attacked you can even do this at only ~275Ly from the bubble now...

I don't know what sites you guys went too, but I was able to shoot down all the sentinels that were hassling without much trouble.

They don't do much damage(unless something has changed), they push you around more than anything.

Set parking brake, enter turret mode, and take them down gradually. Use cover, if available.

You'd have to do something really daft to lose your ship at the Guardian sites (PvP notwithstanding).

It'll always be your SRV that's at risk.
If you lose an SRV, you'll simply respawn inside your ship... somehow.
If you're really worried about losing an SRV, fit a C4/C6 SRV bay (or a 2nd C2 SRV bay), so you've got at least one spare.

The Sentinels aren't really a big threat, as long as you pay attention to them.
The biggest threat they present is their missiles flipping your SRV and then getting it shot up while you're trying to get it back on it's wheels.
Which is where it comes in handy to have a PDT fitted to your ship.

Also, the other Sentinel weapons can knock your SRV off-balance, and tip it over eventually.
Always try to position yourself so you're facing a Sentinel, put the handbrake on and then swap to the SRV turret to destroy the Sentinel to minimise the likelihood of this happening.

Remember where your ship is parked and be prepared to retreat to it if you're taking heavy fire from Sentinels.
If you're underneath your ship, it's shield will protect you from fire.

If you're not already comfortable with driving your SRV while using the turret, or your controls aren't set up to allow it, it's probably best to practice that before going to the Guardian sites.

Don't stir up a lot of trouble at once.
Certain things trigger the appearance of a Sentinel (Finding Ancient relics, activating pylons etc).
Once you've triggered something, look for Sentinels, destroy them and then carry on with what you're doing.

Figure out the layout of the site before you activate the first pylon and the countdown starts.
Have a drive around, locate all the pylons and then go back to the altar and activate the first pylons.
