So here's the question which you must read before answering.

Question:

Should Elite Dangerous have an autopilot that can only be used for jumping to systems (and be able to do multiple jumps till you run out of fuel) and then navigating to stations with no ability to fight or raise shields or make cookies?

I sdhould have added this so apologies for that - discussion here...

I wouldn't use it - seems to me that it defeats the purpose of the game.

If FDev want to add one, fine, but it should be a low priority item.

Please i never want to see an autopilot in ED as i would just feel like i was a passenger, no offence intended but would rather the whole autopilot thing was put to rest.

An autopilot that jumps and flies to your station?

No. To easy to Marco the entire trip.

An autopilot that just handles jumps, maybe.

I'd probably only use it on long uneventful trips, if I decide to make a coffee or something.

Beats running back and forth from the PC to the kitchen like a crazy coffee addict. :D

A resounding "NO" from me. Elite is one of the few modern space games where flying is really fun, and there's also some skill involved in it. Flying has been the cornerstone of Elite: Dangerous from the first Alpha. It's what sets it apart from other current games.

It really is a pilot's space game, and nothing should be changed about that.

it's 100% yes ok closing it now!!!

Nice try ;)

Had to vote no as the cookies bit is really important to me! But in all honesty I am against anything that becomes like long distance travel in other MMO's, not that I consider Ed to be an MMO but that's all down to personal perception. For instance, last night the wife was playing wow and she used one of the flying taxis to take her form one city to another while she played another game. I asked her if she could of flown there herself on one of her mounts, she said yes but she couldn't be bothered. I was left wondering what is the point of playing a game where you do nothing for such a long time... Ironic given i play Ed I know but not every station is as far out as Hutton :D

voted NO......

But..............

I suppose once we have a crew member in our ship it is hard to argue that they should not be able to do at least basic piloting

so maybe i was too hasty.
Its cheap imo and getting the game to play itself, but, once we have npc crew i cant think of a logical reason why not... Should have abstained.

Of course it should have an autopilot.

They are in common use now (3 thousand years earlier.)

And it would mitigate against ED being, potentially, the most boring and time-sinking game ever.

We have a thread open for discussion, your argument has been destroyed over there - in essence we proved how the game will not "play itself" - go check it out :)

Oh - but you could BE a passenger. Maybe ask to see a war zone. Heheh

I hate to shatter your bubble, but this going to be asked for again and again until it is finally implemented... As for when, only Frontier can answer that question.

Personally, I'd like to see a full autopilot implemented that can fuel scoop and dock at a station. I know that is not a popular choice, but it's mine. Your still making the executive decisions, your still at risk from interdiction, jumping into a binary that cooks your ship, etc etc, but it would take some of the tedium out of exploration. Sorry but pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button, scooping, pressing the jump button...

Is just not good game play!

I never understand why people who aren't interested in using autopilots can be so against it being added for those that do.

Its like the docking computer, some use it, some don't. Why would it be any different?

I'll guarantee you that everyone here saying no to an AP doesn't and would never use a DC and if it wasn't in the game and FD wanted to put it in, would fight tooth and nail to deny YOUR FUN LOL

Duplicate. There has been a long running discussion in another thread here: Thread: Navigation Computer needed ?

Nope, as this is the Poll from that discussion :)

Exactly, that's why I voted Yes, using a crew member to pilot is some kind of autopilot.
This is actually what happens with 2.2 when you're in a fighter. By extension of this concept, you could choose to pilot only when it matters to you and for parts which require skill/judgement.
Let's be honest, the rest is pretty boring.

Xenophobia basically.
