Possible stupid question about Corrosive Resistant Cargo Racks ...

Shame, but thanks anyway.

Had a quick go at the whole engineers thing, hated it and just gave up ... so I'll never get my invite :(

Maybe I'll give it another go when "Beyond" hits.

I went pretty far with the Engineers when commodities were dropped although I still *dislike* (polite word) the RNG dice rolls thing, especially after 8-10 bad dice rolls that burned off the key rare mats that I needed in one instance.

I think in the new Beyond The Fringe version, next year, they made a vague promise that dice rolls will supposedly make an improvement over what you have. And of course you can't take away the dice rolls lore completely, because that's so cool and it's a really big selling point when I try to interest friends in the game. I used to try to sell Edsels too. (wikimedia.org)

But the whole thing with prof Palin was too much, a summary of the requirements listed below. So that pretty well means that the Thargoid window dressing is just ambient background noise for me. I know where to find them, Non-Human Signal Sources (NHSS), if I want the equivalent of a cut-scene and God only knows how much I love scripted cut-scenes in my other games.

Prof Palin: System: Maia
Planet: Maia A 3 (Palin Research Centre)
Access: Attain a maximum distance from your career start location of at least 5,000 light years.
Engineer required: Marco Qwent - Rank 3-4
Unlock Requirements: Provide 25 units of Unknown Fragments.
Reputation Gain: Craft modules.
- Sell exploration data to Palin Research Centre.

You just need to spend a day in service of Sirius to unlock Palin's prequisite Engineer, then gather some Modular Terminals for the guy, do some modding there and done. People keep complaining about stuff like that but it took me two days really relaxed Elite playing. You can't just grab it, that's something you need to accept, the rest takes some time and done.
After Palin's invite you just need to go to a Thargoid crash site, shoot some Sensors and collect the pieces. That way you can also unlock Palin.

It is technically possible to illegally dock at Palin's station and buy the racks while you are there but it is very risky and hard to do. SRV trickery is involved.

Care to elaborate? I'm curious.

I've got full access to Palin, so I don't need to sneak in. However, I've never figured out how to enter a base in a SRV and go back to my ship.

There was a thread on Reddit about it a few months back with full detail:

https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDange...d_flying_off_with_cr/?st=j8un4l8k&sh=2f5f63b4

At the very end of the Reddit thread there are a few comments saying that it was patched out in 2.4. What a shame, that I missed the boat on that one. Because I would have tried the exploit but I'm not going to do the work to unlock Palin, sorry, but I'm only a casual player, even though I have close to 1,100-hrs logged in the game, according to Steam.

Like my PlanetSide-2 Squad Lead said to me, why did they waste all this valuable coding time on the Thargoid stuff, something that's just a side diversion to be experienced by a small cross-section of players, yet we have no new content in the game to lure the rest of us in. The last time he was in the game, he was so bored he actually used the Holo creator, that's sort of a private joke for the two of us.

Don't get me wrong, ED is a marvelous space flight sim, there's nothing like it.. and from time to time I may still take one of my 14-ships out of the hangar, just to fly a few missions so I don't forget how to play the game.. but like the man said, I have much bigger fish to fry now, a lot of them, in fact.

Both posts are way too negative. OK, you don't want to do stuff, fine. You don't like Thargoid stuff, OK. But to say the Thargoid interaction is cut-scene is just plain wrong. If you ever visited a Non Human Signal Source you might get a different idea :D

Guilty as charged, sir, with respect to the negative posts but I like to think that there's a reason behind them, and that I may also represent a certain cross-section of players, especially the more casual ones.

And let me tell you a story about a man named Jed, and how he found out the hard way that the Thargoid take a dim view of him using a Xeno Scanner the wrong way, or at the wrong time.

You see I'm always playing the long game and with 14-ships, many of them engineered, and with 1.6 billion in overall assets, I kind of find myself tapped out for things to do. Me and squad lead figure that ED has come to the end of its lifespan, its best before date has already come and gone, and FDev is just trying to let people down gently, without it being too obvious.

Case in point, the *new* stuff coming down the pipe next year; revamped mining, the mere thought of that alone has me barely able to sleep at night, but wait, there's more, revamped exploration for people who want even more boring stuff to do.

We figure that the fleet ships for your squadron might be something, sort of new, an addition to the laborious to play wing stuff. But the game just isn't built from the ground-up for friends to jump into, and enjoy together.. and I don't think it ever will be. Anyone who plays PlanetSide-2, will understand what I mean.

I don't regret all the time that I spent in ED. It was fun, and I still really like it, but there's just not much incentive to play it any more, at least not on a regular basis.

What are these cargo racks useful for? Is it just transporting UAs? Are there other missions where they are needed?

All Thargoid cargo is corrosive, so they come in handy for the Palin mission from Obsidian Orbital / Maia (well, I find it less stressful than flying half the mission without a canopy, but YMMV)

Smuggling thargoid tech/bio matter/resin. If you have decent module protection though you don't need them for short journeys...depending on how much you carry. With all the experimental stuff and required research you would have thought that larger racks would be available by now.

We need another CG :x

Now that this thread seems to have sprung back to life, I did have a mechanical question when it comes to using the corrosive racks. Although I suspect that I'll be answering this specific question myself. I assume if you have multiple cargo racks, you would need to turn off the non-corrosive ones before picking up corrosive cargo, to ensure that it goes into the right rack.??

And whadabout if you're oot-and-aboot in the SRV, does it take damage from the corrosive cargo. Side note, I was a big fan of the Scarab stuff from get-go, and part of me wishes that we could buy or build upgraded SRV's; a little more defense and offensive ability would be nice on the skimmer kill missions, in particular.

My big problem with Palin is that I'm stuck getting the 5,000-ly requirement. And the Cmdr in me, with 1,075-hrs in-country, hates not having this in the bag, it's sittin' in my craw, bugging me. But the n00b in me really needs a primer on handling the long-range missions. (I'll do some more research on this, time is on my side what with my being retired and all..)

I did head out a few times in a variant of this DBX (https://eddp.co/u/9KUfot8K) but I kept hitting stretches of unscoopable stars, and that pretty well shut down the Op. Side-note take two in The Complaints Department vein, this DBX is the ship that I got burned on with 8-10 dice rolls for the FSD Grade-5 range, forcing me to drop back to Grade-4 at 38%. But it's kind of like the man said, you can't have your Hostess Twinkies™ and eat them too.

I'm such an idiot, the story of my life. I had tagged all the scoopable stars eons ago, in the galaxy map, but I had forgot to do one small thing, tick the box "Apply Filter to Route" - (Flickr static composite png screenshot).

So I took the DBX out on a roughly 5,200-ly jaunt from Dinda to [Jellyfish Sector FB-X c1-5] which just cleared the requirement, 5,077-ly, and then I self-destructed to the tune of a 497k buy-back from my roughly 849-Mil still left in the bank.. "Small Change got rained on with his own 38" - Tom Waits - YouTube.

I still had to do a little more work with Marco aka Polo Qwent. You need grade-3 access and maybe half-way to grade-4, and it seems like spamming level-1 upgrades doesn't work as well now. So I did a level-3 on the power plant for my Dolphin, and then the invite email came in from the illustrious Prof Palin.. mind you, I've always had a thing about academics, present company excluded of course. [cool]

So now I'm going to work from the info in this post from July of this year, Professor Palin - unknown fragments, claiming that there are Unknown Fragments at this crash site (HIP 17862 6 C A : 30.32 -98.58).

And on a closing side-note, we do have to give FDev credit where credit is due for making some of this stuff a lot more approachable for the casual player. First dropping the commodities, and then in particular, the recent addition of the ability to plot courses over 1,000-ly, making something like a 5,000-ly trek a lot easier.. assuming your Captain isn't an idiot who doesn't know how to plot for scoopable stars.

** Edited ** -- the outward bound leg in the DBX to [Jellyfish Sector FB-X c1-5] was 108-jumps and I flew that in two roughly 1-hr stints, over the course of the same evening. (I did not pack a lunch, this time..)

First question: no, the corrosive cargo automatically resides in the appropriate CR racks up to the total they can accomodate (2 for one rack, 4 for 2 etc.)

Second question: yes, so you can't hang about too long before transferring the corrosive cargo to your ship.

Thanks tons for the follow-up, boss, much appreciated. I'm all excited now, like a kid at Christmas with a new toy to play with.
