Possible to control E:D on a laptop without mouse?

Am downloading the game atm, and very excited about re-immersing myself into this universe after 25 years.

Currently I have a laptop with no mouse, and I was wondering whether anyone has any experience of controlling the game without a mouse, using just the keyboard and the mouse pad?

Do I need to get at least a mouse? Is a joystick a prerequisite?

My apologies if this topic has already been discussed to death.

Playing with just keyboard is possible, but is going to be tough.

I suggest getting a gamepad to play on the go.

Yeah mouse or a gamepad, I can recommend the original wired Xbox 360 controller.
Thank you all for the advice. Will try and dig out a mouse from somewhere.

Haven't got an Xbox controller, though I've got a few PS3 controllers, but I presume they are not supported?

So I found a mouse and started the (multiplayer) game with the default keyboard and mouse preset, and was immediately at sea! After a few minutes I managed to point the ship in the right direction, but this did not last!

Decided to try the combat scenarios, and this time I wasn't spinning around like a loony, but things were still out of control!

Then I found this thread, and now things are looking brighter :)

I'm flying since Alpha 1 with just the keyboard on a laptop. I remapped the mouse + keyboard preset to be able to roll and pitch with cursor keys.

Associat0r,

How are you making due with just keyboard.

I imagine it's a steep learning curve, but could be really good once you master it.

Keyboard only is perfectly do able. See my signature for some very very handy keyboard only custom controls, a PDF and quick start guide.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and support.

I've spent the last 3 or 4 hours trying all sorts of things, and I'm delighted to report that I have finally figured out the controls that work for me.

The key setting was to set MOUSEMODE to RELATIVE PITCH/ROLL. I also set the MOUSEDEADZONE to zero, while increasing the mouse sensitivity to max. This gave me controls very similar to the ones I had for Elite in the 80s.

Still figuring out some of the other nuances, but the ship is pretty much in control and I managed to do the first couple of combat scenarios and also managed to dock with the station in multiplayer.

The only issue is that somehow when I landed on the allocated space, nothing happened, even though I had deployed the landing gear. The ship sort of slid around for a while till the allocated time was over and I was told to get the hell out!

The first few hours with the game were quite traumatic, and I thought I had lost my touch. Fortunately persistence paid off, and now I'm grinning from ear to ear :)
