Power-grid competition: Prizes Announced!

Hey guys, there has been a lot of activity in the forums here regarding our Power-Grid Software. There is a great thread here started by CMDR Noctivagus : http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=15616

To show our appreciation for the grids you guys have been making (and patience in waiting for a new version) we wanted to run a competition to see who could come up with the best grid for Elite Dangerous.

For those of you who don’t know Power-Grid is a free Application that allows you to control your PC with your Mobile device. It’s very flexible and allows users to create their own control grids for whatever games, apps or whatever they like.

CREATE A GRID FOR ELITE DANGEROUS & UPLOAD
Create your grid for Elite: Dangerous and upload it to the Power-Grid website,

Simple! Just make sure to use your forum handle as your Username and mention the contest in the description. Any Elite Dangerous grids already uploaded will be automatically entered.

You have 2 weeks to Upload it. Entries close on Wednesday 9th July

On July 10th We’ll run a poll here in the forums so you guys can vote for the one you think is the best, that way the Elite Dangerous community can be the judge.

The poll will run for 2 weeks Voting closes on 24th July
The Grid that has the most votes will win a Prize Pack full of Roccat hardware.#

A set of grids that go together will be counted as one entry. :)

For example if you have a set of three bad ass grids that go together for example. That way your vote wouldn't be split 3 ways.

Just make it clear when you upload them (1 of 3 for example)

You can PM if you have any issues.

ill be doing one but mine will be for use with the X52 Pro, but I wont start on it until FD have all functions in place, but when its complete ill post it up.

I unfortunately don't have access to the ED beta, so won't be able to enter. But good luck to those who do. I'll be downloading and viewing the entrants grids on my 7 and 10 inch tablets.

You could still enter if you know what keys and macros you want to use. The other members could test it for you.

I thought I would show you guys some grids from other games to help with inspiration:

Here's the Euro truck simulation grid we worked on internally. Since the game has so many controls instead of going for a straight forward grid of labeled controls to make something a bit different:

Looks good. A couple of suggestions:

1. Change "Balence" to "Balanced".
2. Change "Cargo Eject" to "Eject Cargo".
3. Change "Cargo Doors" to "Cargo Scoop".

Good looking sci-fi space ship control buttons. The illumination effect looks great. Do they get brighter or change color when pressed. I think power grid should allow for more button press events and animations/overlays/back lighting.

was going to see if i could change the word color,,, not sure it can be done,, if not ill look into highlighting

Yes I think the Roccat dev's could maybe look into expanding the options, highlights and animation events available for buttons presses. Maybe offering standard highlighted buttons/outlines when pressed.

Maybe even toggle stick and button animations and matching illuminations.

You can definitely swap out images when pressed. The Euro truck simulator grid and most of the grids we publish are made using the editor.

Here's a sneak peek at a GTA4 cheat grid we'll be publishing next week:

To swap out an image when pressed you can use the active graphic

If you want to just make the text highlight you can draw the text on your icon png or jpg and have an active graphic with the text highlighted.

There are few highlight options already. The active graphic icon is the best and most flexible work around. Animation is more difficult and requires coding since the refresh rate isn't lightning fast.

This one uses a plug in and our track pad and mouse buttons (These can also be added to normal grids BTW)


A good way to see what is possible is to download a grid and see how the functions are done.

Thanks CptMunta.

I've struggled to make a button light up once pressed. Can it create buttons that are only 'on' when pushed and held, and off when released. And others that stay on when pushed once until pushed again to turn off.

I need to spend a little more time learning how these things are created and work.

I've just uploaded my grid to the site. If anyone else is going to try it out please set your gear down key to #, and set your flight assist button (z) to toggle mode.

I have a few enhancements in mind already:

1. Split into two grids, perhaps one for docking and one for flight.
2. Include forward and reverse thrust. As I find it is easier to use power grid when docking rather than throttle.
3. Include panel navigation on a third grid?
4. I suspect a custom control would also be able to have a state so power buttons could show power distribution.
5. Change or add icons for cruise, jump, scoop and gear.
6. Perhaps change the orientation?

Anyway its work in progress, ideally i want to do away with the keyboard and just use joystick throttle and a tablet.

Does anyone know if power-grid will work with two tablets at the same time?

Yes it will work on more than one . I managed to get it working on 5 devices, i run 2 as of now,,

as for mine , i have now changed the wording also added press highlights, also now uploaded, i think

all default kb cmds, except for "prev sub" which is set to "U"
easy to change to yuor own cmds if wish , useing the roccar launcher/editor,
just click on button to change , on right panel, then top in center panel assign your key cmd.
then when done hit "apply" prompt to save "yes" , refresh tablet ..

Weapons = Right Arrow
Engines = Up Arrow
Systems = Left Arrow
Supercruise = C
Hyperjump = J
Prev sub = U
next Sub = Y
Cargo Scoop = Home
Eject Cargo = End
Landing = Insert

Heat Sink = E
