Powerplay Power Play - Is it really worth it?

Power play looks like a great role play opportunity but is it really worth the time?

Also if yes what aspect? Combat? Trading?

It is worth for Power Play modules and the few advantages you can gain from bounty hunting (Arissa Lavigny-Duval)
and trading (Edmund Mahon) when they are in good power position.

Did it for the packhounds and have meant to defect but staying at level four's been so easy so I just kept on doing it for the nice salary of five million a week.
Until now when at Sothis and money just rolls in in heaps so I wont go back this week and will defect after thursdays payday.
But it's fun being tagged as a hostile. Gives a certain sense of urgency when doing runs in neighboring powers.
It's something to do amongst all the other things :)

It depends on what you want. For me, the most value I've gotten out of Powerplay has been the community side of things - coordinating with others to try to thwart the plans of other powers (and, obviously, making plans yourselves!) In terms of sheer gameplay stuff, it depends on the power. Aisling Duval, for example, has a really useful bonus to BGS influence in her systems if you're rank 5 (the rank 2 bonus kinda sucks.) Several powers have increased bounty payouts. LYR gives a boost to payouts for exploration data. Mahon and Torval are great for traders. etc. PP is deeply flawed, but when I got into Powerplay is when I really started to get addicted to Elite.

At the end of the day, though, Powerplay is a time and money sink, unless you invest a lot of time in it (by getting your merits through combat, i.e. undermining.) At that point, having done it like that before, it feels like a job, and burnout set in pretty quickly for me when I tried it that way. And really, there are faster ways of making money if that's something you really care about. But the community side of PP has been priceless to me: there's no greater feeling than working together with friends to achieve a common goal, and seeing it succeed, and even suffering the challenging times together.

And yes, I think for someone who wants to roleplay a certain way, Powerplay is worthwhile, though I'm not aware of any PP groups that place special emphasis on RPing.

PowerPlay organisers have had to reverse engineer mechanics and their primary job is to coordinate cooperation between disparate communities more than anything else.

Powers may not place a special emphasis on role play, but player groups and communities within the Power will and do.

I speak as a Power organizer (Arissa Lavigny-Duval) and a group leader (The Kamadhenu Chapterhouse of Inquisition). The Chapterhouse may not operate in chat as an in-character role play server, but every public presentation tries to be in character, and many of our Inquisitors will write their own adventures on Inara. Our members have affiliations with a roleplay group or two.

Well the money and modules are not a big concern but the community thing is what I am looking for, being a part of something.

I will give it try and invest myself in one of the powers and the community around them I guess.

Thanks for the answer.

It has a lot of flaws and could be improved in many ways, but it can be a lot of fun. I've been pledged to Felicia Winters for more than a year and I wouldn't still be playing this game if it wasn't for the changing objectives week after week and the people I've met in the Federal community.

You can help your Power in many ways since almost every activity in the game can influence Powerplay. Combat and hauling are usually the main activities but you can help by exploring or mining if that's what you like to do.

One important bit of advice: If you're doing Powerplay by yourself you're doing it wrong. Every Power has a discord server and a subreddit. Ignore the subreddit and join the discord server for your Power if you really want to enjoy Powerplay and understand how things work.

But how do I choose the right power to join?

Powerplay is worth something?! :D

I got all the modules I could ever want (all the good ones anyway). been allied to Aisling for a year with 0 contribution streak, what else is powerplay good for other than modules? certainly isn't the credits :D

be good if these modules came in scales too (different sizes, gimbaled/ turreted ect) for a little diversity.... but no.

Well, it's up to you. I only know the internals of the federal powers so that's what I can recommend. We have a great community and some people that is pretty knowledgeable about how Powerplay works. You're welcome to join Felicia Winters or Zachary Hudson if you'd like.

You can find a link to our discord in /r/EliteWinters/ , in the right sidebar. Give it a try, no compromise :)

Thanks CMDR.

It's more fun if you roleplay your cmdr's preferences to pledging to a power. Like what kind of power's policies would your cmdr believe and be involved in? Would he be more federation, imperial or alliance minded, or of the other independent powers? Then optionally coordinating with player groups or discord goals in line with the power's interests with such activities as undermining, expansion, or opposition, bgs efforts ,etc.

It's fun to roleplay with, be it PvP or PvE, but the bigges plus' are the cash (If you can be bothered to maintain the merits), and the modules, oh my good lord the modules.

Namely, the Advanced Plasma, the Enforcer cannons, the Pacifiers, the FSD interrupt rocket, the Packhounds, and the Prismatic shields.

The others are a straight downgrade or at best, a sidegrade.

For example the Pulse disruptors have a built in scramble, but thier DPS is lower than a C1 pulse turret, the Cytoscarmblers (Which I havent yet tested though I have just unlocked them) only do shield damage and have limited range and jitter, the Imp' Hammers, which do more DPS IF you land all the shots, but generate a shedload of heat, and a couple of others (Mining lance and Retributor) which are pretty much useless in all occasions.
