Power Play...speculation

Power Play: speculation

People have been linking this to the hockey term and that it could be represented in a way within the game: one team is at an advantage as they have more players on the ice due to the other teams penalty etc. However, I don't think that's the case and obviously the clue is in the name.

We know we're getting at least two new ships: The Diamondback and Imperial Courier.

Mining is going to be more worthwhile, and we're getting drones that carry out certain tasks. And there's the mission overhaul.

Now, they've told us that what's so far been revealed to be apart of Power Play has only scratched the surface.

Well, that tells me that we should be expecting a fair amount of content from Power Play.

Personally, I think we're going to also get the Federal Corvette. And that the Empire and Federation are going to truly go to war, with the Alliance seizing the opportunity for itself.

Or perhaps both the Empire and Federation are going to be embroiled in civil wars with the Alliance still seizing the opportunity.

In both situations, all out war.

Maybe we'll see Federation and Empire capital ships battling and not just one on one, squads of them.

I think you'll have to choose one faction and that will be it, no more being friendly and high ranks in each faction. Combine this with the mission overhaul among other things and we could have ourselves an interesting situation that may open the door for an alien invasion in a later update.

But I'm probably wrong.

What's everyone else think?

EDIT: I think that I've changed my mind from what I originally wrote above.

After hearing what others think and being shown details about what the developers have said in the distant past and more recently, Power Play looks to be changing the core of the game in a way that allows more interaction with the galaxy.

Mission overhaulin: are factions going to be more in depth and we can affect them more and being friendly with, say the Federation won't bode well if you travel into Empire space etc.

There's also other additions, like to mining as I've already said.

It's safe to say that with a comment from the developers, in the last newsletter I believe, saying:

"you haven't seen anything yet"

Power Play is going to be something very interesting indeed.

PS: Planetary landings, walking around ships and stations and boarding have been confirmed to be part of a paid expansion or expansions.

Aliens? Who knows, but it's unlikely they'll be in Power Play. This is looking to be an update that perhaps finishes the foundations of the game and delivers some well appreciated additions/tweaks that need to come before anything on a larger scale.

As revealed by the talk of procedurally-generated weapons and the Galnet story about "weird tech", I'd put money on us getting some weird and (hopefully) wonderful new weapons.

With the new weapons & alien technology in the bespoke galnet thread I wouldn't be too surprised if it was thargoids (finally). There'll probably (hopefully) be an adjustment to the way crime & consequence is treated, going by the sticky thread that Sandro started. There was mention of "very high speed pursuits" and changing/improved mission structures, which hints also at improved background sim and crime/consequence.

I doubt it's a hockey term though... simply coz that's a north American thing and FD are Brits.

I'm hoping for a vast enhancement of the mechanics of missions; faction involvement and persistent NPCs; and several other smaller improvements and additions.

However I'm prepared for it to be more width rather than depth. I sincerely hope I'm wrong about that.

In addition to the above, I'd also like to allow myself the wild speculation that we'll see a significant uptick of angry posts on here as people type while sobbing into their keyboards about how 1.3 has positively ruined their lives and they can continue no longer.

You heard it here first, folks.

Maybe we'll also get to walk around the inside of our ships and hit the onboard bar with CMDR Shephard and Garrus Vakarian....

Seriously though, it would be quite the surprise if they also implemented walking around our ships in this update too, as they did say they'll be new ways to interact with the game and that's certainly one of them them.

We can speculate.

My guesses.

Option 1:
Power as in power management.
More options to choose from when outfitting. New cooling module with its own new subsystem slot. Silent running is replaced by power profiles, similar to fire groups, allowing quickly switchin what modules (including cooling) are powered.

Option 2:
Power as in faction power.
Richer simulation. System security directly influenced by faction influence and type of controlling faction. More interesting faction conflicts.

Option 3:
Thargoids

I think that we will likely be able to walk around on ship and stations. The pictures from the inside of the Courier are explicit enough.
Moreover, I not agree with the total war hypotesis, but it's time for Targhoid to appear and with the new mission system, there will be new missions involving the reach and investigation of areas far from civilized space (e.g. Hyponia and Regor sector). With the new alien party, Fed and Imp will lower their tension, allowing a new tech to arise: Fed/Imp hybrid technology for higher FDL range engines in order to enabling the new missions in alien space.
IMHO, this is a good way for putting all together the good elements in ED actually unused, i.e. the big, detailed, realistic but completely content's empty galaxy.

I would like to get the planet landing too, but I think that we never see this feature in the currently purchased game.

I never thought it could be what you said here....would actually make sense.

Hmmm

Mission rewrite (yay!) and little drones for collecting stuff (yay, I think?) are the definites. Not sure what else. I think the criminal record system revamp is at the top of my zigazag-ah list, but that seems to be at least one major update away.

Well there this "new interaction with the Galaxy" that interesting and no explanations as to what that is.

Thargoids I expect to be a huge update in itself, so I don't expect to see them show up until Xbox release. With the next big gameplay update for us PC players being Walking around ships and space stations update.

Only thing I reasonably sure of for powerplay update is that we will be getting 3-5 ships. Drones, and some improvements to mining. Drones is the one I most interested in, especially once we get combat drones 1.4 perhaps that will make living the life of a independent pilot more realistic with player and NPC wings flying around. An a complete rewrite of the mission system, including us having to hunt down assassination targets Supercruise, hopefully assassination missions will have a lot more variety of targets and suitable for players in different ships and skills levels.

Yeah, getting attacked when you have a 400 Credit bounty for accidentally shooting someone in a moshpit RES needs looking at haha

Walking on ships has always been stated to be a paid for expansion, if 1.3 was going to be a paid for expansion we'd know about it by now, and I'd suspect it would be 2.0 not 1.3.

As for planetary landing, that is yet another paid for expansion.

1.3 will be the return of Bobbleheads! They'll give an extra bonus of power while being fun, hence power play :)

Clearly what else can it be ? ^^

Are you sure?
Planetary landings will probably be not for free, but the other feature why not?

Ahhh yeah Tacheel is right, they stated that larger content additions such as walking around ships will be "dlc."

Perhaps a lot of our speculations about Power Play are wrong, maybe not even close (mine especially XD).

Defo. We also need scales of lawlessness from "wanted" through to "offender" to "fugitive", although I still don't get why that great mechanism from 20 years ago missed the release for ED, and persistent statuses for anything beyond a certain point. If I scrape a Police Viper accidentally, paying a small fine immediately should clear my name. Not paying it should make things worse. Killing an unwanted ship should make me a fugitive. Having hidden counters which start moving down when fines/bounties are paid to move statuses back down would be so, so easy. Zigazag-ah.

Not a chance lol

That's more likely.
