PowerPlay 2.0: Who are you pledging to?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (don't have time to login today and verify it), but stronghold systems have a carrier that you can land at (if it's your power) and offers you a super-market place equivalent to Jameson (i.e. every ship and module can be bought there). If that is correct, then one of Li's hidden bonuses is that you will have access to these mega markets + his usual 15% discount! If this is true, I'll never need to go to Jameson memorial again. :D

This was the main perk that was swaying me to join Li Yon Rui instead of Yuri Grom. My mates didn't like the other boneses though, so we all made compromises.

I went with ALD. I've found that the imperial folks were friendlier than the feds were in the past. It was between ALD and Archer for the combat perks.
Yeah but they are friendly in that creepy way of smiling at you saying nice words while insulting your momma in the subtext. I wouldn't trust an Imp to lift a finger to save their own grandmother from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal. Even with orders signed in triplicate.

I went with Kaine.

I had been pledged to LYR for 300-and-some-odd weeks, and if I hadn't been forcibly removed, I would have stuck with him. But I liked the idea of my commander feeling burned getting a pink slip with no regard for time served loyally ... and so flipping a 180 going full anti-corpo and pledging with the upstart who dissed Sirius Corp in her recruitment brochure sounded fun.

And not to derail, but is there a Discord server or anything set up for Kaine supporters yet where we can coordinate and stuff?

Back in a day when I was interested in PP and main game I was pledged to Zachary Hudson.

I'd like to test PP2, but in the area of CQC Holdings influence there are really only 2 Powers - Yuri and Aisling, so for me to make it having any sense will be picking one of those two. No point to i.e. pledge to Archon or Li, when I never operate in their systems.

I must admit, to support Yuri my squad and I have had to relocate. We used to be based squarely in LYR territory. It's kind of fun starting again in a new place, but that's definitely not going to work for everybody. There's a lot that goes into choosing what power, if any, works for a person or group.

Who are you guys going with and why? Are you role playing, or doing it purely objectively? I know there's no right or wrong answer, but I'm interested to see how people make this decision to help me make my own.
I struggled with the decision. I want to make a good decision, and not decide to change in 3 months and start all over.

Here is my struggle:

1. The Best Ethos
Do I choose the best power that matches the best political and cultural belief system for my cmdr? My cmdr is a generally well adjusted human that believes in leaving others alone, avoiding murderous rampages, and doesn't believe in enslavement and human trafficking. -> Nakato Kaine is the normal person choice. It makes sense, but of course the most boring choice.

2. The Best Activity Rewards
Immediately I don't care about the stated rewards. Credits mean nothing, so repair, refuel, module discounts, rebuy discounts, trade bonuses, etc. mean nothing to me. I don't care. And I already have a bunch of powerplay modules I mostly don't use... so the rewards are generally meaningless to me. Maybe something good in the mini care packages. if so great, but its a mystery.

For many players min/maxing the rewards might be very important.

3. Best Looking Representative.
Shallow but important. Obviously Aisling and Arissa. Sure enough INARA has them as the top popular powers. I wonder why?
Half the leaders look acceptably okay.
Zemina Torval... really? Who's gonna invite her to the Christmas Party?

Yep, one picture to judge appearances by.

4. Best Looking Stuff
Paint jobs, Decals, etc. Yep, shallow but important. This is a video game where we fly space ships.
Do I want a dumb color for my ships? Do my main bubble mission ships already have cool paint jobs? Ideally I would like to show some patriotism towards the power I choose, but if they offer really lousy paint jobs and decals... and if the color scheme is just the opposite to what I like... well that sucks.
So ya, color scheme and paint jobs... probably more important in a video game than fake NPC leaders that we never interact with anyway.

5. BGS
I don't care about playing or manipulating the BGS. I realize it has an effect, but I don't care.

So, do I choose the realistic best power for my cmdr's belief's? Or the craziest funny nut job? Or choose based on looks, appearances, rewards, and color schemes?

Update: I have confirmed that the stronghold carriers for Li Yong-Rui do sell everything (except for the imperial and federation rank locked ships), complete with 15% discount! Sweet!

There may be hidden benefits to certain powers. As I've already posted, going with Li Yong-Rui means that when you take advantage of the market place on the stronghold carriers (all PP factions have these, they sell everything but Fed/Imp rank locked ships) you also get the 15% discount. So I now have a bunch of alternatives to Jameson Memorial, and all with a larger discount.

It also looks like those that pledge to Archon Delaine, and get to the end ranks, will be able to truly live the anarchy/pilot life style in his space. They will be able to attack non-anarchy factions with impunity as their bounties will be reduced 100% (no word on notoriety).

Another bonus shared by a few of the powers (I think Khaine and Aisling) is a 100% bonus reputation (not influence) with factions in their area of space. That means you can become allied with minor factions in their sytems twice as fast, which means you'll get to the most lucrative missions twice as fast.

Just go with who you like and what bonuses you think might be the most useful to you in the long run. Or go with the popular ones if you want more people to group up with. Regardless, the new system gives you a LOT to do and it's fun. Plus it looks like there is a ranking system for your contributions (similar to how CGs work) which means you can actually get some money back from them now. :D

As far as modules go, I hear you. I have a stockpile of the ones I might want to use from various powers I pledge to during PP 1.0. I'm looking forward to unlocking all those modules so I can clean out my storage. Once I can buy them any time, I don't need to sit on top a hoard of packhounds, prismatic shields, etc.

So while an explorer at heart, I do mining/trading to pay the bills. So I said let me see who’s got bonus in both. To my horror, the only one is Zemina Torval. Nope. No. Never.

Not really an amazing bonus.
  • If I have a home system with surrounding systems, its pretty quick to get rep with local factions. Any cmdrs with a preferred home system have already done this.
  • The long term time/effort/commitment for ranking up in powerplay faaaaaar exceeds the short-term efforts to rank up desired minor factions.

I went with Nakato Kaine because she seemed like the most normal realistic choice. Ya, kinda boring. Her ship colors are dog-grass-vomit green. 🤷‍♂️

I might switch to Zamina Torval because:
  • She looks ridiculous. Like a silly cartoon character
  • Sounds like she's bat-sh-crazy. Like an old great aunt stuck in the 1800's.
  • Empire has better colors and PP paint jobs.
