praise salvation! Guardian plasma charger is now engineered!

I'm not sure why people are saying gauss is more powerful.

Gauss = 17.5 DPS against a basilisk, 4.861 DPE.
Plasma Charger = 28 DPS against a basilisk, 4.92 DPE.

In addition to this, plasma chargers can be precharged, essentially making the first shot 'free'. If people are having a hard time powering them, it's only because they do so much more DPS. Four plasma chargers are going to use the approximate power of six gauss, so it stands to reason you can't fire as regularly.

By any reasonable standard, the plasma charger is about a 50% upgrade to gauss for the purpose of exertion.

As far as heart damage goes, gauss likely still holds an edge, but not by much. Certainly not by so much that I'd be willing to sacrifice a 50% boost to DPS.

Gauss is pretty much obsolete.

aaagh!
I need more power!
The increased power draw from the engineered shard and engineered charger is killing my builds.
Salvation! I beseech theee!
Bless us with an engineered guardian power plant!
A grade 5 monstered human power plant doesn't have the power!
We must all send praise to salvation so he may bless us more!

Just out of curiosity (I'm not an AX pilot) - do you have a link to your build?

Not really? also don't forget plasma chargers deal absolute damage so can damage human ships too. currently working on a build with a python for human hunting and a 2nd python for thargoid hunting. the thargoid hunting one is fine for power. its the human hunting one that is struggling for power. combining shield cells, guardian shield boosters, engineered guardian plasmas, shield boosters, an A rated Kill Warrant Scanner... its a lot of power... Though admittedly its a balancing factor I guess... prevents overpowered builds? then again... There is plenty of overpowered builds out there already :/

Does the "4 guardian thingys per ship" still apply here? In that case, naively sorting ships by agility in Coriolis and then checking for PP size with at least 4 HPs suggests that the FAS could make a good platform for these guns. 4 suitable HPs, size 6 PP+Distro - and amazingly good shields (for a FAS) if you stuff her with Guardian shield boosters instead of hull reinforcements.

There's your problem. 3.2 MW of folly.
Look. I quite like to have an A rated KWS with fast scan engineering. Lets me scan and pop enemies from a decent range.
And before you (or someone else) furiously starts digging themselfs a hole and shoving their heads in it... its just the way I like to play. I like to kill warrant scan. It gives extra credits. I'm not saying everyone should do it. You wanna use a 100 shield boosters instead of a KWS then that is you.

Now now, I'm into BGS and use KWS all the time because it's often useful the get bounty vouchers for the lesser factions in the system. I just think A-rate is a trap. B is perfectly adequate with 3500 meters of range and has half the power consumption.

The 4 guardian thingies is for weapons only. You can cram as many guardian shield packs in a ship as you want/can. In fact looking at the numbers an FAS with that build is possible and has enough power to run everything. I might drop the python and go for an fas instead

(I'm also not an AX pilot, but an trying to learn.) No mention of the AX cannon? Are these not even comparable, so not in the conversation?

From this and later posts, I got a bit confused. Are the power problems you mention due to the fact that these builds have power-hungry goodies (such as shields and their associated buffs)? Nominally you wouldn't be using those in AX combat and they could be powered down or their priorities lowered...

I just picked up a couple of the C2s but haven’t had a chance to try them out yet. I’m actually wondering if they would be any good as a high-shot-speed alternative to a PA against human opponents? Anyone tried that?

Yuh.
I have. Pretty hilarious hitting a zooming max speed pirate eagle with what equals a large plasma shot going at insane speeds.
Pretty powerful in my opinion

The key with these things is, I think, not being afraid to take your time and place your shots well.

They take a tremendous amount of distributor power, but because you can charge them up even when at 0, there is effectively no penalty for holding your fire for a few seconds and waiting for the optimum moment.

On my Challenger, the first shot completely drains my distributor, and then I am down to regeneration, waiting to fill up not only my weapons but also my distributor. That means I have about 14 seconds to get my shot exactly where I want it to be.

In fact, they are so powerful, this can actually become a liability; on the last heart of a cyclops, four fully charged shots will instantly cause a panic Shield every time. The easy solution is just to have a separate Fire Group where I only fire one or two at a time.

I'm pretty sure it's accurate, but if I'm looking at the numbers right, then by the time you account for getting the first shot for free because of the pre-charge, at it's Optimum range it's about 20% more efficient than gauss, and even at 1500 m, it still is just as efficient, even against hydras, while doing phenomenally better DPS.

I'm using 3 on a shieldless FAS for 4 wep pips, and not on alien targets
They replace 3 focused PAs.
