wow cant beleive the rubbish people talk...........they are games and who cares when they are released etc get over it..........no need of the childish attitude. if they released the same day so what you are either playing one or the other.....

I guess it's a win-win for space sim fans. If SC's demo happens to be spectacular, well done! If not, Elite Dangerous will instead be to one to carry that momentum until SC manages to produce a demo worthy of garner the attention. Either or, I don't see why people should be hating on SC just because they are E: D backers/fans or vise-versa.

The "winner" will be the release with the most quality. Hopefully they'll both be good, and then ultimately the winners will be us. :)

I agree, I think they will both be winners. I too have bought the Premium beta of E: D and a pledge package for SC. They both look like they are going to be amazing games. The space games we have all been waiting for.

I think they will both be AAA quality but they will be different. E: D has the huge scale and realistic universe (1:1 scale and celestial movements etc) as where SC has hyper detailed ships and more 1st/3rd person content (for now anyway).

I guess technically SC and ED do "compete" but i think any sci-fi gamer worth his salt won't be choosing between the two, they will be playing both :)

All eyes are on these 2 games. Maybe it's a dumb milestone, but to step in front of Elite and swipe the trophy for first game to beta does mean something.

Does SC's Dog Fight Module really constitute a Beta? it's little more than a combat Demo (that ED has had out for some time) the difference being it's multiplayer instead of against AI.

But it's no beta. There will be no Trading or earning credits or outfitting in the DFM. It's an Arena based Deathmatch. And to start with it's just a few of the ships.

I'm not hating on SC at all, just saying that a combat demo isn't as big a deal as a full beta like ED are launching. So it will be exciting but will not steal the spotlight. In My opinion.

Hmm, I must be the only person that finds it strange that SC announces their dogfighting release the day before Elite.

I also have Elite Alpha and the Avenger package for SC. I'm leaning more towards Elite's way of doing business which has been pretty quiet workmanlike building a game and not the mass marketing of SC.

Elite has their big day coming up and SC inadvertently schedules their big release the day before (the dogfighting is really big compared to the hangar module - it's real gameplay for the first time). I'm sure they had no idea that May 30 was kind of a big day for Elite.

I could just be getting paranoid in my advancing years. Wish them both luck, but would like to see Elite finally start pulling in the big $$ like SC has been doing for so long.

Far as I know it's only multi for a select few. The rest play against ai offline like us beta do now.

this is surely not a coincidence, so definitely a little jab at Elite. we as customers can't judge whether it's a friendly jab or a not-so-friendly one, but does it really matter? we should assume that it's all in good sport (competition is good).

i for one expect a may 29 release of "Arena Commander" as they are now calling it, if they do make that deadline, to be a buggy affair at best, like Elite's first multiplayer alpha. that's just the nature of the beast, especially when crunching on a tight schedule. and they are very much crunching - you can read that plainly from their announcement.

so the real date that week, for me, remains may 30. maybe i'll look into Arena Commander to pass the time, but just as likely i'll let it pass for a few days until the worst wrinkles are ironed out.

PS: one little tangent though, to people saying every true spacesim fan will play both: where do you get your time?! i'll be happy if i manage to properly play one of them!

If we're talking the final game (and I'm not overly bothered about the dogfighting module or whatever they're calling it) then they won't be released on anything like the same time frame. I will probably switch between both when they're both available.

Hey guys!

I was just about to purchase the Premium Beta package (since the Alpha package isn't available any more). However, I'm a bit curious on what is actually included in it right now?

It seems to be that it'll only include extremely little single player content - at least until May 30th.

What will I actually be able to do TODAY? Will I be able to dock? Purchase another ship? Change ship fittings? Mine asteroids? Because to me it sounds like I'll be able to pick one or two missions to complete. And that sure doesn't sound like beta to me, that'd be more like a short demo if anything.

Please note that I'm not complaining or anything, I just want to know what I'll get today for my €120.

Thanks!

Nope, until May 30th the only thing you ll be able to do is the single player missions, 8 or 9 of them. Ship and weapons is pre porgrammed in the scenarios, so no choices.

You'll get the Alpha 1.1 combat scenarios (9 of them), access to the Premium Beta on May 30th (which will include docking, trading, ship-fitting, inter-system travel, multi-player game, etc.), and everything that is released after that.

You can see a play-through of all 9 Alpha 1.1 scenarios on the video of Twitch Stream #1.

You should be aware, however, that progress made is expected to be reset at points during the Beta release, at least until the Gamma release.

You'll get beta access on the 30th with all the multiplayer, docking, outfitting, trading and traveling. That's 12 days from now.
Right NOW, you can play the SP scenarios which will give you a good taste of what combat is like. Also you'll be able to use the oculus rift (if you have one). It's only a handful of scenarios, true, but then again 12 days isn't that terribly far away.

You'll still get beta access quite some time before the regular beta owners, plus they have to buy the planetfall and FPS expansions separately whereas you have that included.

Thank you all for your replies, it helped a lot! Unfortunately, I won't be purchasing the game at this time but instead wait until next month.

I'm excited for the beta itself, but not so much about the Alpha 1.1 combat scenarios. I'll be getting other games that I can play now and get the Premium Beta in a month.

Thanks again for the quick replies and I'll see you all in a month. Or perhaps in 12 days depending on how many other games I've purchased before then. :p

I know, right! I'm 48 years old, and I'm counting down the next 12 days to Premium Beta like a 5 year old waiting for Xmas!

Hope to see you in space in the near future. :)

Sensible enough - although as mentioned if you leave it too long until only Standard beta is available you'll have to buy the expansions separately. Currently alpha 4 has trading, travelling, docking, ship equipment, galaxy map and four playable ships.

It's expected that premium beta on 30th will be basically that, plus maybe one or two other surprises that FD have in store, but that hasn't been confirmed.

The current premium beta build is fun enough, but if you're not that interested in combat it likely wouldn't hold your interest for 12 days.

I do enjoy combat, although I prefer some kind of progression with it, like earning credits to upgrade my ship with new fittings and eventually purchasing a new shiny ship.

I tell myself that I like trading more than combat, although I usually end up shooting down ships anyway in games like EVE (I know, I'm not comparing the two, I'm just saying).

As of today though, the SP build offers none of the above that I want, which is why I'm holding off until it does. I know 12 days isn't a long time, but I'm bored of my current games and would like something to do until then. And like you said, the current Beta build probably won't fill that 12 day gap unfortunately.

I would have purchased the Alpha version right now if I could, even though I'd only be able to play it for 12 days until the beta is released. I'm guessing no one knows a way to get hold of a copy (legitimately of course!) of the Alpha version even though they stopped selling it in their store?

Like, would it perhaps be possible to "upgrade" to the Alpha version today if I purchase the Premium Beta first?

I know it sounds kind of desperate but, well, yeah, I'm desperate - I'm bored of all other games I own.

Admission to the alpha process is closed, and I don't really think you would want to pay 240€ for 12 days of alpha4 anyway...;)

No, I would happily pay €240 for 12 days of Alpha. Now, I can understand why they closed Alpha purchases so that people wouldn't feel "ripped off" if they paid that much for only a month when Beta was €120 cheaper.

However, I'm well aware of the current situation so I was hoping it'd be possible to make it happen somehow anyway.
