News Premium Beta access update

So again, there are two possible scenarios here: The alpha backers play new versions in a parallel universe that gets scrapped when the update is released, or they play them on the "real" universe while everyone else is shut out. Which one it is, as far as I can see, has not been established.

Indeed, but does it matter? My guess is that it will be the former as the latter doesn't make any sense. The progress will be scrapped multiple times as time goes by, this would just be another of those times.

The other option is that they run multiple servers (as they do now currently) and only one of them is updated to the latest alpha build. Alpha players then use this server, whilst beta folks use the other server(s). When the build is released to the beta folks, the other servers are then updated to the current state of the alpha build.

I don't see any point in them doing that though, as it would mean (for some) that alpha have had two weeks "progress" - and even though that's irrelevant at this stage, it doesn't seem to stop people moaning about it. ;)

Yes it does matter, as I have made an effort to explain in my earlier posts. Specifically, here:
I still think it is not a nice thing to shut out players for any amount of time, especially if another group of players gets to keep playing. It will inevitably be seen as a priviledge. In fact Frontier are advertising it as such and (were) charging money for it! This creates the wrong incentive.

And I think you are mistaken about a shut-out making no sense. Quoting from the same post of mine:
[The shut-out] option might still seem preferrable to FD, because by definition the test universe would run in a different environment than production. There is always a chance, however small (cloud servers, virtual machines, and deployment automation can replicate environments pretty closely), that some horrible bug will only show up in production.
Remember I'm assuming we're talking about a period of a few hours, as Michael Brookes has alluded to earlier in this very thread:

Nothing has changed, beta builds will be made available to the premium beta backers as soon as they have been cleared for release.
Yes. [That 2 weeks period was actually meant for first premium beta build.]

The only open question is whether the early access period is parallel-universe or shut-out universe.

*Sigh*...

There is NO evidence to suggest that beta players will be shut out whilst alpha test the latest phase. Not one shred.

It would make no sense, there are many technical ways to handle multiple groups of people testing different builds (I've outlined a few), and to do that would simply honk off the beta people for no good reason.

To me, it's a complete non issue as Frontier are simply not that stupid.

As far as I know someone got to run ED without upgrading during 4.02/4.03 phase. Server connected, but warned that it runs different version of client. So basically server supports running different kind of clients, just warns about instability.

Server just needs to match those with early rollout clients in their own instances.

Indeed. In fact we're already doing that, with alpha testers running the latest alpha version while premium beta testers are running alpha 1.1.

I suspect this is one of the reasons why FD released 1.1 to premium beta - so they could test multi-versioning.

You could be right, but, online multiplayer multi-versioning is quite different to having a single online environment and a solo environment.

Most likely, they released 1.1 as it's self contained, and they could.

Time of day

Has the actual time the Premium Beta goes live been announced yet?

Is it 00.01 (GMT) Friday Morning? or some other time?

I worry about this too as i live in the future (compared to the UK or the US) so when things are to launch "on the 30th" i usually will not get them until the following day. Which is the 30th at the launch location but already the 31st where i am.

New Zealand is pretty much at the start of the international dateline so is 12 or 13 hours ahead of GMT (depending on things like daylight savings) and can be nearly a whole 24 hours ahead of places in the USA.

Because of this i do not expect to be able to start playing the beta until the 31st or best case scenario late at night on the 30th.

I would like to know the expected GMT time though.

If previous alpha builds are anything to go by, it will be "when Michael signs it off" which could be any time during the day or evening. Previous alpha releases have come at 9pm before now.

I've no idea if they'll handle beta any differently.

A little more info on a specific time would be great, my fiance wants to do something with me on Friday and guess what I would prefer to do...

Join the club mate, we're all in the same boat. Just accept it when it comes & when you get the free time to play it. I took up meditating after the second alpha release. ;)

Friday 9pm GMT will be at least Saturday 10am for me then. I guess i will just leave it till Sat morning.

At least it's a long weekend here so i'll have 3 days to play it. We (in New Zealand) get "The Queens Birthday" off as a public holiday (i know it's not her actual birthday it's just when they decide to do it).

Here's to the Queen.
