you weren't being thick, the ruddy field says "username", not "user email address". They could make that clearer.

To make it even more confusing, the username really is a username that looks like an email address. Your email address can be different. For eg. my username is kickstarter@ollieclark.com but I changed my email address to elite@ollieclark.com. You can't change your username as far as I can work out.

I had some fun with that...

And for those of us who don't have access to wherever that FAQ is supposed to be?

Bad beta installer experience

Why oh why does the beta installer *INSIST* on installing the game in my AppData folder?!?

The launcher downloads the installer to an AppData subfolder, and the installer can only install the game to it's parent directory!

I tried cancelling the installer and moving it to C:\Games\Frontier\Game\Installers in order to comply with it's stupid requirement to install to the parent directory only.

The installer complied but the game says *NO!* I can only launch the game through the launcher. The launcher then promptly ignores my install and wants to download the launcher again.

Oh yeah, also, the game launches on my first monitor and not my primary monitor (I chose "Make this my primary screen" for my second monitor).

First world problems, huh? :D

Sounds that way. IMHO taking in mind that alpha 4.0 is practically more or less release candidate for premium beta first build, it sounds reasonable.

Sorry new to Elite forum..can you tell me in Beta access out now can you upgrade ship ie weapons/cobra and keep credits earned ie transfer to Final Beta?

The current Alpha still doesn't allow testers to install to a drive/folder of their choice. This may be to try and contain the files in known places for these initial builds.

It doesn't bother me personally, as I can run the game from the default path without any issues. But I guess for those who need/want to install to different path will just have to bear with it for now.

The question is, why can't you run from the default folders, what is different about your set up to others?

Premium Beta (PB) is very much about to start. Right now, PBers have been given the single player campaigns to have a play about with, ahead of the actual beta release. Single Player doesn't include docking and outfitting.

When the PB build is released, you'll certainly be able to upgrade parts/weapons/ships (as the latest Alpha does), but expect credits or stats in to be reset in the next build, or at any time FD need to do so. It's testing, and they may change how things work at any time they need.

here is the quick fix, as posted elsewhere:

I have noticed that a lot of people use the same setup as myself. A small SSD drive for their OS install and a larger separate drive for games. The latest ED client forces people to use the OS drive for the game files. This is not ideal for those with restricted space.

Here are some instructions for installing ED to your preferred drive and folder. I have tested and verified this works a few times now.

Kudos to TheDarkKnight for the easier and refined version. I have edited the OP so his instructions are on the main post.

  1. Run the Client-Installer.exe
  2. Choose the drive and or folder you wish to use. In my case D:\Elite
  3. Let the launcher install finish, if it is running, close the launcher window, do not login
  4. Navigate to where you installed the launcher, in my case D:\Elite, and create a folder called Products in the launcher folder. EG: - D:\Elite\Products
  5. Now start the launcher again, log in and install the client.
  6. When the download is complete you should see the install as automatically installed the client in the folder you created called Product.

This workaround will hopefully only be short lived. I am sure FD will get us an updated client installer than restores the option to chose your ED install location.

My guess is that it's important to get as uniform build as possible in testing, and we are testing, not really playing. Enjoy.

Please report the monitor bug on a ticket.

@ Stoo:

No, the question is why the launcher can be installed to any folder and why the installer won't follow the launcher.

I never said I couldn't run it from the default folder.
In fact I had to in order to try it out, and the game looks impressively polished for an alpha.

In any case, this will clearly be fixed at some point down the line, but I don't have to like it now.

EDIT: Yaffle for president! :D

I bought the £90 tier reward because I wanted the physical DRM **PREMIUM** boxset edition.

And now I find out that this Premium Beta is available to those who pledged £100 upwards. That sucks a little.

I go to the shop and see how much the upgrade will cost me - £15. This sucks a little too.

Now. The question is - if I pay this £15 to get beta access now will I still get the premium boxset edition sent to me? And will my dual-core, GeForce 9600GT machine run it, or should I just save my money and wait for a later beta?

Yea, I was initially confused by that too. I think renaming the first-round beta testing to premium beta was always going to confuse us premium box set backers... they should have thought about that one, not good marketing, makes our premium box set sound less premium than it was originally! Ah, well, it's just a naming confusion. I believe if you purchase the premium beta for the extra £15 it just replaces your store products (standard beta + expansion pass, which premium beta automatically includes), not your Kickstarter perks, which are separate and not part of the store.

You keep all your rewards of Kickstarter. It is a different database. You remain a backer of kickstarter even if you are upgrading in the new store. And of course you have always access to your account in the old app backers (and also in your account in the new store)
