Horizons Private group wings bugged?

Tonight my self and another Commander attempted to wing up in a private group, it did not work as expected. We both were it the same group, same system, same station. We sent and excepted wing request, set beacon to wing but neither could see the others ship or any players on the scanner. I went to his beacon and was supposedly within 70m of my wing mans ship and could not see him, he could not see me either, I think one should be able to spot an Anaconda at that range.
We both shut down and restarted with the same result.

Private group is nothing but Open mode with a restriction on who can enter the instance. Generally if you can get winged in once then it will continue to work. In the fuel rats we have a lot of these problems so here is our go to list of fixes:

Now steps to try:
1) Try to wing up and navlock to the beacon normally.
2) If unsuccessful return to supercruise and get your partner to supercruise for 5-10 seconds before dropping and you trying again. (We call this supercruise hop).
3) With both of you in normal space get one of you to quit to desktop and restart.
4) Same but for other person.

If at any time you can see each other in supercruise an interdictor can help to "force" the connection. If at anytime someone gets a crash to menu either hyperspacing or dropping on a beacon this is actually a good thing and signifies the server swapping to match your partners. Didn't used to crash you but that seems to be what's going no now (2.1.05)

Known issues that can't be fixed in game without many many repeated attempts:
Different localised servers: Trying to connect AUS and US players is known nightmare. Same region of world helps.
Router and internet settings: Firewalls, router settings and other security is known to make winging impossible*

*I had this on a student router, estimated 80% of peer to peer connections were blocked. Since I didn't have access to the settings there was nothing I could do to fix this. Now on my own router with ports open, NAT open etc and I very rarely have problems now.

Alex,
I am the other commander that tried to hook up with Gizmo and as he said despite being able to talk each other thru the process our servers just would not allow us to see each other.

I am in Australia and Gizmo in the US of A. We will both give it another go tomorrow and see if we are successful. Thank you for your advice.

But for my education,
might I ask you to do a step by step process (101 for dummies) of hooking up so at least I have a plan to follow.
Cheers
D38.

Hi there bud.

I'm pretty sure Alex is on the ball with the issue; instancing issues are pretty ten-a-penny when you're meeting with random CMDRs regularly to save their backsides before they suffocate ;)

The info he has given you is pretty much step-by-step as it gets. There's no troubleshooting route or fix per se; it's pretty much that due to the connection quality between you and the person you're trying to wing with, the game isn't adding you to the same instance. He's given some decent methods for re-establishing connections effectively in the hope that it adds you to the same instance.

I used to see this a lot when I started out-and if you enable wing beacon you'll frustratingly see each other's wing beacons right in front of you with no ship. It's calmed down by now, but I still find that when we all log in, there's a 5 min or so period where connections with friends haven't been established properly yet; we're in open or the same private group (some buds start some highly unusual bugs when we try play in open) but the friend icons don't reliably appear on my galaxy map and we have the same instancing issues. Usually we log in, make our ways to our fighting spot out of wing, then wing up when we're there and all is well.

Thank you Alex.
That will give us some new things to try tonight.

Good luck, I hope it works for you.
One thing I did think of after posting this (had to go to work) was that sometimes (especially on xbox) sending the wing signal through a 3rd party allows for easier connections.
E.g. Player 1 cannot connect well to player 2. So player 3 invites both player 1 and player 2 into a wing to bridge the connection.

Overall it will still be very iffy and may take many attempts if it's at all possible. The fuel rats have gone so far as to any AUS/NZ rats having it mentioned in their name since connecting to that lovely country down there is so darn difficult. :( There's been some occasions where we've had 3 people from US/EU all trying to connect with one chap in Australia and I'm sad to say it's just been impossible :(

Thank you for the assistance Alex.
As predicted the connection is lousy at best, tonight we could not even keep comms open most of the time.
