∞ probes?

But that’s not good game design.

We're just working with what FDEV gives us here, the idea was to use the game mechanics and assets they already developed (HUD, clip logic etc.) and just tweak them to get an overall better gameplay mechanic. I'd argue that being able to just spam probes at a planetoid while watching Netflix is equally bad as forcing the same player to wait for more probes.

But I hear you on the positive reward loop, unfortunately the game has been designed to reward you with either credits, mats or reputation and it's hard to come up with a different form of reward.

Interpreting the 63% liberally would be:
Give us an infinite method to map the planet (fall back scanner)
but allow us to use better tools (probes with bigger sensor radius),
like i suggested. ;)

Actually I wouldn't mind being able to cover the planet in the livestream with just 3 probes instead of 5. With their current radius that does not seem possible.

I remember hearing something about different planets having different efficiency targets, so I would expect gas giants for example to have an efficiency target like 12 or 18 (maybe achievable in 15 or something.... ). In any case, I think even the diehard infinite probe supporters would appreciate the ability to cover larger planets faster, with probes with more radius.

Mengy et al are ignoring that the middle option is also infinite, instead holding on to the 'crafted'.

Others complain it's not a representative poll while ignoring the poll size of > 6k players (which is a lot for a dead game).

Numbers cannot prove anything to one with True Faith™ in the finite nature of probes.

Here's an update on the voting numbers. Still only 11% of those who voted are fully opposed to infinite probes, poll now has ~8.4k votes.

I guess that’s on the development team. Shouldnt the reward for exploration be discovery?

Here’s a thought.

1. Efficient (or better) scan leads to rare POI on surface. (To be designed)

2. Player explores POI and interacts with something (to be designed)

3. Discovery is logged. Player turns in data and POI becomes persistent with a discovered by “CMDR” tag.

What about non-Horizons? It’s been a couple years now, I think it’s time to put horizons into this update so we can move forward without that ball and chain.

Nope I'm not ignoring that at all, in fact it's the option I voted for in OA's poll!

I love the idea of infinite stock probes but finite engineered probes. It solves the debate completely, offering up both methods and allowing the players to choose what they want. It also gives that infinity symbol on the FSS page a purpose for being there!!! :D

CMDR: "We want a poll!"
Also CMDRS: "But not that result! Best of 3!"

I never asked for a poll. I only think it´s odd that ship transfer takes forever because of immersion (even though that means I start the game, order my ship, quit the game and come back after hours when the ship is finally there) while you can have an infinite amount of probes because not having to craft them in game is better for gameplay. How is actually doing something in game less immersive than doing the dishes while waiting for an unnecessary timer to expire?

according to brett and several other very smart peeps around here, that vote isn't at all representative since i don't launch through steam didn't vote.

that said, that's a hell of noise you guys are doing for some lousy probes. and you have collectively managed to propose solutions that are even more artificially convoluted than even frontier would have. respect!

maybe just remove the infinity symbol and have a good exploration/discovery based reward loop to incentivize making finite enhanced probes and I think it’s smooth sailing.

I don't like the idea of infinity of something. Just make them very cheap. For example, from 1 iron you get 10 probes. Maximum amount - 1000 probes.

I'm wondering if this would have been an issue at all if they made the probes infinite but didn't include the infinity symbol or mention the reasoning for it at all. For all we knew they could just be made from pure energy, and send a signal back to the ship once they hit the planet surface (no I can't scientifically explain how that would work, but I'm sure someone can make something up that's convincing!).

Maybe even re-charge them using ship fuel or something if people don't like the immershun hit.

Problem solved, as far as I'm concerned.

For which reason is that?!

Actually the idea of making alot of probes from 1 mat is the correct answer potentially. 1 mat is equal to 1 ton in this game. How much should a probe weigh and how many equal 1 ton. That should tell you how many it should make.

I know a probe in cargo weighs one ton but that is from a limit in cargo weight. How much should a probe weigh if it wasn't limited to 1 ton minimum.

BTW, I think they need to expand on cargo finally. I don't see how it's so hard to have things besides weight one ton in the game? Is it something about server saving info?!
