Problems with USB-C xbox controller

I just bought one of the new Xbox controllers (the USB-C ones) and the game doesn't seem to want to play nice with it at least in wireless mode (I don't have a single cable to test) - the only option I get outside keyboard/mouse/empty is "Generic Joystick" which removes most of the shortcuts I'm used to. I've tried launching from the folder and through steam with and without big picture mode, disabled Generic controller support in steam, and turned steam input on/off (which does lead to gamepad options being shown but then it just alltogether doesn't respond to input). Anyone know any other potential fixes for this beyond reinstalling windows entirely?

It has a USB-C plug (that and the share button are the most obvious visual differences it from the past gen), but I'm using it with my laptop's built in bluetooth. It still "works" in generic joystick mode - but all the shortcuts are missing or wonky. No issues with other games through steam or xbox app...

Make sure you have the xbox accessories app installed like suggested above, I've had my controller not show up without it being installed in some games.

Works fine for me but I use the xbox wireless adapter for windows 10. It did not work for me very nicely using bluetooth. I didn't try it hard wired.

Fixed it by buying a USB-C cable like Gully_Foyle suggested. Nothing else worked except once as a fluke for a few minutes - reformatted and redownloaded, downloaded the xbox companion app (which only works when the controller is plugged in to the usb jack), messed with remaps in steam, enabled/disabled input options, even used big picture. Looks like it's an issue with the game not recognizing it through Bluetooth or something.

Thanks for all the suggestions though guys.

You're not alone. It seems like the new Xbox Series controllers don't work with Elite. To be fair they don't say they are supported on the controller support page, but I'm pretty bummed since my Xbone controller worked just fine over BlueTooth. Seems silly since every other game I play recognized the new Xbox Series controller just fine and, within a few months, it'll be impossible to find the older style of controller.

Does anyone know if the developer will fix this at some point and add support for the newer style of Xbox controller?

According to the MS forums, that's your problem right there. As usual, MS seems to think that if they do it, it's the standard and everyone else has to comply. I got the same issue with my XBox Elite 2 two controller. Yes, it basically works with the built-in or a generic BT adapter, but it's unreliable - for any game. Cable or the XBox controller BT adapter.

This is a bit OT, but if MS thinks it's a standard, it's normally because they've introduced a standardized way of doing it. I could be wrong, but my guess is that they introduced a new method of emulating attached devices that works with Bluetooth as well that game developers haven't picked up on yet.

But yeah, Stardog, have you tried plugging it in? You can disconnect it after elite finishes loading but you have to plug it in again every time you launch the game.

I haven't yet. I just ordered the Xbone USB key as well. Super strange but I'll try this for sure. Thanks for the tip.

I also agree 100%. Blaming Microsoft for creating a standard within their operating system is like blaming McDonalds for only serving their own nugget sauce. It's their house, their rules, and companies have known that since 1.0.

I did just before you posted and it works now. Thanks for replying. This is so silly. I mean controllers not working right in game is one thing. Steam often messes up settings like that. However just flat out being dead at the home screen is something I've never seen until now. Oh well. I guess I can at least use my new controller now lol.

I know it's another expense, but have you tried the Xbox wireless adapter for windows 10? I use that and it seems to work flawless for me. Bluetooth was awful.

Yeah I ordered one on Thursday. Should be here on Sunday to try out. Kind of sucks that it's supposed to be a $25 part but, due to Covid, resellers are making bank on them to get official Xbox versions.
