Hardware & Technical Proccessor for PC Build to play Elite

Hi All

Im looking to get a new PC and would like it to play Elite on.
Starting with the Chip I have found a Core i5 6500 Kirby Lake 7th Gen Chip system 16Gb Ram 1Tb HD and I have my own GTX 960 4Gb GPU to installe. Would this be OK sys to run Elite wit please?

They do another one which is a lot more money but sounds super and a little overkill for what I use it. But that is a Core i7 7700 Kaby Lake Chip. Both have 8 or 16Gb DDR4 Ram and the option of a 128 SSD at £46

Does any of the two systems above look as though it will cope with Elite. Well the i& should as it gives the chip 12232 on the passmark benchmark scale site..

Regards OS

P.S. The only other thing the PC might do is a bit of photo edditing with Adobe Lightroom

I'll give you a hint, it runs fine at 1080p on my rig (see the sig).

The GTX 960 would be a weak point if you want to run the game at any higher resolution (it's designed for 1080p gaming), especially avoid super sampling (SS) with it if you do however.

Yep - the GPU is your bottleneck here. CPU should be fine - is the mobo one of the new 270 or current 170 series? KabyLake chips will fit either I believe. I'd flog the GPU via popular auction sites and invest in a 1070 (or 1080).

i5-6500 is Skylake, not Kaby lake. It is still plenty fast enough. Like others say, the video card isn't the fastest and upgrading that may be a consideration if you have a higher resolution monitor.

Hi All

Iv just bought a couple of bits a 24" 2ms BenQ led Monitor and a Intel Core i5 4690k 3.5Ghz (4ghz Turbo Boost) Which will apparently OC very high. and its only cost me £100 But it puts me in the position of having to get the rest of the bits and build the PC. I used to build them all the time 20-18 years ago for myself as well as friends and family. But that was then The arcitecture has grown lots over the years. So this will be interesting. Any help or suggestions on which parts might work well with this chip such as Motherboard, Ram, and so on.. That is or if you have anything that you might be selling that could help me.

The other thing is any advice about during the building with these new parts and latest tech Also if there is anything to watch for or be carfull of that might trip us up or that I might miss during the build? Many thanks. I might end up chickening out in the end and get my lad to build it I mean he has got his BA in computer sciance but we only see him every 6-8 weeks now he has his dream job that is LOL .

Motherboard: something with Z97 chipset to allow overclocking
Cooler: probably look at a decent high end air cooler, but check the size for whatever case you have or will get. I find high end air simpler and more reliable than low end watercooling.
Ram: DDR3 at 1600 speeds or faster. 1600 is safe, if much faster then read up on compatibility. 2x8GB would be a decent amount for most and adding in pairs will allow dual channel to function.
GPU: Assuming reusing the 960 for now, but you can look to upgrade if more performance is needed
Storage: depends on budget, but a common approach is to get a SSD for the operating system and a big hard disk for bulk storage. Any current SSD will make the operating system feel much faster and responsive than a hard disk so don't worry about getting the highest performing ones. It makes little difference in practice and now I just buy mainly on price per capacity.
PSU: get something decent and not the cheapest. Unless you're planning on fitting two high end GPUs in future, around 500W is plenty.
Case: whatever you like the looks of. Too much choice. Obviously make sure it is big enough for whatever motherboard was chosen.
