Profanity Filter is Getting Out of Hand

Well, then they do it for no reason, obviously. For the sake of this thread's humor, I inserted some asterisks, in constructions like "...so d**n right". Got silently deleted (it was there after I hit the submit button, so it was not removed by the text editor). I find it irritating that mods impersonate as me and change the way I use to express myself. They can delete comments that don't comply to the rules, but not change what users say without notice.

Sorry but you agreed to the Terms & Conditions when signing up to the forum.

We do remove profanity when it's reported to us and in most cases it's done quietly with no penalties (Advisories/Infractions) applied.

If you can't express yourself without the use of profanity well that's not really the fault of the moderation team.

I agree that the filters are not perfect and some things censored are daft but in many other cases the post edited is usually aggressive and flaming etc..

ED isn't he only game FD makes and some have a much younger audience.

Sir.TJ, thanks for being clear about that. I was not aware that the Terms and Conditions allow mods to impersonate me and *change* what I'm saying. I filtered the "profanity" myself with asterisks, like nearly all other comments here did before. I requested Brett C to check if silent editing is really considered an appropriate moderation means, as there are better options (deletion of posts is far less intrusive). So, let's not escalate that here and rather continue via PM. Eventually, if this is really considered appropriate behavior, I'd decide become a "read only" user.

No problem, If you feel a moderator action has been improperly applied then we have procedures in place for complaints.

Moderator actions aren’t always correct; if you feel that a moderation action was performed against you incorrectly, please see the final post on how to appeal. Openly posting about a moderation action upon you or others on the forums will not be permitted.

To appeal a moderation action against you, please message Brett C by clicking here or email community@frontier.co.uk. Harassment and threat emails sent to us will be ignored.

Posting about it on the forums as a thread or reply to a thread is not a valid method to initiate an investigation on whether or not the moderation action performed was correct.

Also just so everyone is aware for the future.

This is a family friendly forum; we would appreciate against the usage of swearing or masked swearing.

Intentionally evading the filter will result in moderation to your posted content to comply with our community guidelines.

I always find it ironic that a game which is so zealous about language censorship because of possible age of it's audience then goes on to cheerfully promote, encourage, and offer the ability to: Smuggle drugs, trade slaves, murder innocent npcs, supply personal weapons, and generally commit crime in a multitude of ways :)

All good, wholesome stuff. ;) :D

That. So much that.

Career as a psychopatic murderhobo? Within game rules.
Naming your exploration vessel "Star Analyzer"? NOOOOOPEEEEE. (It's a s**t name but I had no other example on hand :D)

Lol. Seriously, remove that.

edit: the s**t stands for soft, obviously.

My exploration Beluga, the "Midnight Vagrant" was originally censored. However, I just dropped a ticket to FDev and they quickly white-listed it :)

will the filter get used on the mission board etc? this game could become a whole lot more stars '*' than it has already ĺol

I think I should send this website to support.

https://www.allwords.com

There is an option to search every word, to see if it contains a certain string.

So, you could find every word containing "flip" for example.

If they then do this for every word on the naughty list, and white list all the results (assuming the result isn't also on the naughty list itself)

Well, that would be a good start.

Have fun with that support guys.

I feel for you.

813 matches for a word for rear end, or donkey, for starters. (That means there are 813 normal words we currently can't use without being censored, right now, and that's just ONE "naughty" word. Imagine just how utterly destroyed communication will be if they actually release this trash...)

Of course, this won't help a bunch of names for places and people, but hey.

(It seems to have support for other languages too?)

Presumably it's the PEGI (or similar) checklist. Text-based cargo that includes fictional "drugs", and machines getting damaged (ship combat) tends to rate lower on game age-appropriateness requirements, while unfiltered internet profanity rates somewhat high. Elite has a PEGI 7 rating and an ESRB T rating. I guess those ratings also helped make Elite useful as a VR showpiece. (More recent AAA games with VR, like FO4VR and DOOMVR are rated ESRB M.)

Uh yeah funny thing is VR is usually not recommended under the age of 13.

See oculus manual for instance, they specifically prohibit usage of the HMD for kids under 13.

Its highly amusing since I can name my ship but that same name is censored on these forums.

Probably both are censored. AFAIK when your ship name gets censored, it's censored to other players viewing it, not when you view you own ship; the fact that you are being censored is hidden from you.

There was a suggestion earlier in this thread that INARA shows your ship names as others see them, but I haven't heard if that's still the case.
(INARA gets the names from your journal files, and I would have guessed they would not be censored in your own journal, but maybe they are?)
None of my ship names are censored on INARA but that might just mean I'm pleasantly wholesome :D I guess I need to name a ship something that should get flagged and then check.
