Newcomer / Intro Professor Palin

I want to get the engineer named Professor Palin who requires me to attain a maximum distance from my career start location of at least 5,000 light years, but I can't remember where my career start location was.

Is there some way I can find out where I started?

You started in one of two places, both of which are close together (I think).

If you started with a Sidewinder and NO SRV you started in LHS 3447.

If you started with a Sidewinder and an SRV you started at a nearby surface port. Sorry, I don't remember the name.

There are only 2 starting locations which I am sure someone will know soon. However, on the right panel, you will the max distance traveled from your start location, so you can tell when you have gone far enough

Just to add... in your right hand panel, under statistics, it will show your max travel distance from your start point so far

ETA my 5kly trip was to the Crescent sector . Should you head that way and if you see any planets discovered by Crow Skyshrine en route that's my Commander :D There's not many...

I did the Horizons start so I began at Asellus Primus. You'll get a message from Palin when you've travelled far enough.

The Cat's Paw nebula is around 5000ly away and has plenty of scoopable stars on the way for a stress free voyage.

Check this page on the ED wikia

Set a course to amundsen terminal. Go there and visit (nice if you did any damage to your ship). Then plan a course about 4-500 LY further out away from the bubble - there’s a small blue nebula in that area - I aimed for about the middle and that was a nice end sight. When there check your engineer status with Palin, if it hasn’t updated just do a quick log off/on and it should set you straight.

That’s how I did it a month or so ago, took maybe 3 ½ hours or so but it was worth it for those dd5 thrusters!

Ohh and for the last step for unlocking Palin; almost neighboring Maia is HIP 17862. Go to HIP 17862 6 C A, +30.3, -98.6. It’s a very dark canyon, but there’s a crashed ship with all the thargoid sensor fragments you could ever want. Just shoot the sensors. Maybe do a relog. Easy peasy

When I did that I got a diamondback with a fuel scoop, and flew in a straight line till covered said miles, then self distruct , cuts the journey in half

This is the correct answer OP.

If you are on a PC and use EDDiscovery (why wouldn't you?) - you have two little distance windows (amongst all the other stuff) in the top-right - set one (Home) to your start location (the other is Sol) and you have a continuous readout of max distance on hand (saves scrolling through the stats in the UI).

Not much use though if you are playing in iron-man mode.

The trouble with that is you loose all the exploration data that you could sell for profit or access.

I reached my 5000 LY goal, but when I self-destructed I got the rebury screen and no matter what I do ED puts me back at Amundsen Terminal in a free Sidewinder.

What am I doing wrong?

Is that the last station you were docked at? And I hope you got the Palin confo before you destructed!

I thought of seppuku at the end of my jaunt but I'm so tight I took umbrage at the rebuy cost. Besides, there's always some exp. data to gather for extra mullah and I couldn't pass that up. Plus a planet or two with my CMDR name on it...

Did you have enough money for the rebuy?
Did it offer your original loadout at all?

I realized as soon as I pushed the reply button that I shouldn't have landed at Amundsen Terminal, that was the mistake.

This is strange, after I quit the game and then went back in I am now at the station that was where I started playing. I know that because I recognized the station and the guy that runs it. I'm not too far from home now and it shouldn't take me long to get back to my home station.

Thanks everyone!

If you collect mapping data and your ship is destroyed wouldn't that mapping data just transfer to your other ships?

Nope. For some odd reason materials and data scans and uniquely modified engineering components do, but not exploration data.
